webo··on Ask HN: What's the best corporate password manager?
This. 1Password comes with limitations but by far it’s the best password manager for teams due to the built in 2fa support.

I wish it was possible to share a credential with specific people without a need to create a dedicated vault.

webo··on Building an AI to predict human age from a blood sample
For some context, the author is an undergraduate student.
webo··on Netlify raises $53M Series C as microservices approach to web development grows
I don’t understand how these 3 offerings prove your point? I wouldn’t consider AWS Lambda as a microservice partern.
webo··on Covid-19 precautions for Stripe employees and customers
Interesting article. I think in this specific example call centre employees almost NEED to be remote to be successful whereas tech work don’t.

>It is not so simple. There are lots of factors that could lead to such a ban, including a culture in which remote workers tend to be slacking due to low morale. Also, we were studying call-centre work, which is easily measured and easily performed remotely.

webo··on HQ Trivia shuts down after acquisition falls through
I did a little bit of exploring a few years ago [0]. Iirc they just had one live stream for all their shows. All app events (quiz, chat messages) were through websocket.

The founders are ex-Vine founders, who then created a live streaming app called Hype. It looked like they were re-using Hype in HQ according to some URLs like hype.space.

webo··on Goodbye Joyent
Very very few developers these days get to work on such low level stack. It just sounds very technically challenging yet fun. Wish him good luck to find something related in his next venture.
webo··on Show HN: We are hiring engineering interns who don't use social media
This really bothers me, but I can’t exactly tell why.

If what people do on their own time doesn’t affect job performance, what’s the point of filtering by random criteria? Almost like disqualify based on a hobby or political/religious views.

Social media is just like another skill. You can use it to your advantage or abuse it.

webo··on Top Paying Tech Companies by SWE Level
They claim they check the offer letters. Numbers look decently accurate from a few people I know. Remember this is total compensation, not just cash.
webo··on Slack have blocked using the website on mobile
Works fine for me on iOS safari.
webo··on Dropbox Transfer
I remember when file.pizza was first released. Glad to see it’s still being actively hosted.
webo··on U.S. Navy bans TikTok from government-issued mobile devices
Quick google search didn’t reveal anything, source?
webo··on The Configuration Complexity Curse
How has your experience been with Pulumi? I tried it back in its alpha days to compare to terraform but I didn’t make much progress due to lack of documentation and limited ecosystem.
webo··on AWS Elasticsearch: a fundamentally-flawed offering
They don't even do multi-node for node sizes smaller than 58gb RAM. Dedicated master is not available until the cluster size at least 6 nodes of 58gb RAM. Multi-master is not available.

I'm not sure if this is based on research or optimal configuration size, but it seems very expensive to get a 3-node cluster going on ElasticCo.

Does anybody have experience with compose? (https://compose.com/databases/elasticsearch)

webo··on Colorado Town Offers 1 Gbps for $60 After Years of Battling Comcast
Similar story here in Fayetteville Arkansas. I’ve been enjoying a truly gigabit internet for $80/mo since 2017. AT&T and Cox still don’t have anything remotely close to the gigabit speed in residential areas.

webo··on MITM on HTTPS traffic in Kazakhstan
It seems like it's easy to take down the site that's hosting the certs (http://qca.kz/). Maybe that's an appropriate response to this...

   $ wrk -t 50 -c 500 -d 5m --latency --timeout 3s http://qca.kz/
webo··on Show HN: Catj – A new way to display JSON files
as far as i can tell, jq doesn't do flattening .
webo··on Netlify Dev
>you don't need to be online with your feature branch checked out

Can you expand on what do you mean by this?

webo··on San Francisco median one bedroom apartment rent hits a new peak of $3,690
>no one is entitled to a one bedroom

I’m curious how do you mean this? There are a plenty of reasons as to why I wouldn’t want to have a roommate and a 2bd is not affordable.

webo··on Developers Are the Problem, Not Monoliths
What exactly do you consider disparate? And how big is the company?
webo··on Use DuckDuckGo to improve your privacy online (2018)
I can’t tell if everyone here is serious when they say they haven’t looked back.

Google knowledge graph is years ahead of DDG. Average person does not want to click through results, s/he just wants the answer. Compare these queries in Google vs. ddg:

  - nba scores
  - 2018 super bowl
  - lakers roster
  - movies in theatres
  - game of thrones cast
  - $aapl
  - where is my phone
  - 2019 thanksgiving
etc
webo··on Letter from Tim Cook to Apple Investors
This reads a lot like the HN-famous Dropbox comment.
webo··on How Facebook Keeps Messenger from Crashing on New Year's Eve
Facebook get its share amount of bad PR (some are well deserved), but we shouldn’t dismiss amazing engineering work because of those. This is a technical piece that highlights solutions to problems not many out there get to solve.
webo··on Grafana Loki – Like Prometheus, but for logs
Thanks! What about the distributed tracing feature?
webo··on Grafana Loki – Like Prometheus, but for logs
Is this the same technology kausal.co guys had? It’s a shame it was just shut down after the acquisition.
webo··on DigitalOcean launches its container service
Having the workers on public droplets is very inconvenient. Are there plans to put them in private networking? (VPC / private subnet in AWS terms)
