webjunkie··on Stop Calling These Dark Design Patterns or Dark UX
Actually not such a genius way to get clicks on your ads. The bounce rate on their landing page must be pretty high. You want traffic to convert, not just any click.
webjunkie··on Why we never thank open source maintainers
I was once looking for a specific library that does one thing – and found exactly something like it on Github. It did the job so well and without a hitch, that after seeing it has only a few stars and no PRs, I left an Github issue saying thank you to the maintainer.
webjunkie··on Security alerts on GitHub
If you see it that way, yes. But getting people to sign up on your website without the 25% cut is also not for free, think about costly advertising and so on. This is probably what Github and other marketplaces bet on. You always pay for any channel, whether it's direct cuts or upfront costs to get a customer.
webjunkie··on Should we stop using the Google font service and host on our own?
True. I'm not saying this solves the problem, but at least the "outside of your control" part is not absolute.
webjunkie··on Should we stop using the Google font service and host on our own?
1. Tracking is not really effective if the user agent caches the font aggressively.

2. Subresource integrity takes care that at least the file cannot be modified freely without you knowing. So there is only the case that the file either is there as you expect, or it is not available. Does that leave room for malicious intent? https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Security/Subres...

webjunkie··on Deutsche Bank makes source code publicly available for the first time
The Federal Kraftfahrt Amt is in Flensburg. This is where the records are kept for drivers who get points.
webjunkie··on Atmospheric CO2 levels accelerate upwards
Slap extra taxes on meat and forbid any advertising for meat or meat-containing products. Boom.
webjunkie··on Site requests bank logins for online purchases
This sounds exactly like "Giropay" in Germany, a competitor to Sofort and supported by some banks, but has very low adoption.
webjunkie··on After Almost a Century, the 2nd Avenue Subway Is Close to Arriving
Use private window.
webjunkie··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone

I don't like Samsung because they bloat Android.
Out of your points, this might be the easiest one to solve. I got a Samsung after being a Nexus owner, and it's not so bad! You can change to the Google now launcher, Google keyboard and so on, and Samsung does not actually get in my way.
webjunkie··on Facebook Ordered to Stop Collecting Data on WhatsApp Users in Germany
Get one on Twilio, set it up so you get the verification code, finished. Right?
webjunkie··on Uber revolution will not last
I never understood the interior layout of subways in Paris... they have seats positioned right at the door, where people would stand normally. It seemed to me like everyone was always stepping on each others toes, and on each stop the whole train was shuffeling around for people to get in and out.
webjunkie··on Ask HN: What are good reads for designing APIs?
Good ideas, thanks!
webjunkie··on Tim Cook, the interview: Running Apple ‘is sort of a lonely job’
Apples and oranges...
webjunkie··on PEP 526: Variable declaration in Python
Why not the other way around:

    my_class_attr = ClassAttr[bool]: True
This seems more familiar somehow.
webjunkie··on Ask HN: What are good reads for designing APIs?
- Never embed personalized information (eg not `{ post: { user_has_commented: true } }`

Until you hear from an iOS developer that it is a huge pain trying to figure out if the user has left a comment on an item or not and including this little flag would save tons of time.

webjunkie··on Google Unfairly Curbs Web Ads and Skews Search, EU Alleges
True, but I think it has to do with the fact that Google is 90% of the supermarkets in town and most people don't know that there are other supermarkets at all.
webjunkie··on Why Go solves so many problems for web developers
Gotta love Django's ModelForms
webjunkie··on 133 Years Later, Gaudí’s Cathedral Nears Completion
I really liked visiting it. And also wondered about the super long queues, when all you have to do is buy a ticket online and skip the queue entirely.
webjunkie··on “Fashion Is Hard. PostgreSQL Is Easy” [video]
You always get what you pay for. I'd rather not buy too cheap and wear toxic stuff: http://www.welt.de/wirtschaft/article133578674/Greenpeace-wa...
webjunkie··on Ask HN: How do you log application events?
I really like Sentry (https://github.com/getsentry/sentry) for exception tracking. It's easy to set up, supports different platforms, and looks great.
webjunkie··on Input: Fonts for Code
On my Macbook I've tried many many coding fonts, yet Ubuntu Mono is actually the best. All others either seem to render weird to me or I don't like their look in the first place.
webjunkie··on Django 1.7 RC1
I would be very much in favor for at least updating to some CSS3 features and refreshing the experience. Tweak some colors and borders here and there, no total overhaul needed.
webjunkie··on FCC Head to Revise Broadband-Rules Plan
Why don't the just use the same law the EU recently passed? No need to invent something new and argue about it.
webjunkie··on Mozilla will put ads directly into Firefox
Migrated to feedly without any issues at all. Still using RSS happily.
webjunkie··on Bootstrap 3.1 released
Especially with a large, content-driven site, sooner or later you can make use of every single one of Bootstrap's features. I wrote code for grids and columns dozens of times myself. Each project had new requirements but somehow the core was always the same. A button here, style the list there, the headings don't work bla bla bla. With Bootstrap you can start right away because everything is already there for you. People underestimate that fact and value "lean and simple" more.

webjunkie··on SimCity Offline Is Coming
This is it. There is not much challenging to the new SimCity. It is just not the same experience as SC4. Even with all things fixed, offline mode etc. it makes fun for just a couple of hours.
webjunkie··on Pngquant – Lossy PNG compressor
Use ImageAlpha as a GUI for OSX. Very nice results!
