webdevver··on Chat-tails: Throwback terminal chat, built on Tailscale
irc has a very low return on investment. crazy amount of tinkering for what is ascii characters vaguely thrown in your direction. it clearly has cultural staying power (and it does act as a strong filter for technically-minded people), but a oneliner chatroom in your terminal is a fun option for both newbies who get easily intimidated, and pros who dont have much free time anymore.
webdevver··on Introduction to Software Development Tooling (2024)
makefiles and shellscripts are still knocking around in systems programming world, which i think is the world OP comes from
webdevver··on Qualcomm acquires RISC-V focused Ventana Micro Systems
bad, bad, bad sign, when a company starts to penny pinch like that.

but unfortunately very in-line with the thesis that qualcomm is getting squeezed by a commodifying market where value-add opportunity is shifting outside of the SoC platform.

it is also interesting that places where you would expect to have quite 'switched-on' software development practices tend to be the opposite - and the much-maligned 'codemonkeys' at 'big tech' infact tend to be pretty damn good.

it was painful for me to accept that the most elite programmers i have ever encountered were the ones working in high frequency trading, finance, and mass-producers of 'slop' (adtech, etc.)

i still ache to work in embedded fields, in 8kB constrained environment to write perfectly correct code without a cycle wasted, but i know from (others) experience that embedded software tends to have the worst software developers and software development practices of them all.

webdevver··on Perl's decline was cultural
i disagree, python is Just Better. ive never used perl but ive had to install it due to some antique tools requiring it, and every time its been an incomprehensible mess. i still have no idea how packages work in perl. also, it seems like everything in perl is a string? and the syntax looks like a mess.

maybe its painful for guys to admit that languages could be a lot better designed, and when such langauges appeared, everyone flocked to them.

webdevver··on Unreal Tournament 2004 is back
i think im mixing things up - that term might be unique to assault cube. in sauerbraten i remember a map called venice, everyone had snipers and its one shot to kill anyone, very satisfying if youre good and very frustrating if someones better than you.
webdevver··on Unreal Tournament 2004 is back
i am such a slow old boomer now but i absolutely loved the sauerbraten TOSOK (Team One Shot One Kill) venice servers. also assault cube TOSOK/OSOK (dm variant). also UrbanTerror jump maps. ut_swim will always be in my heart.

when people sell their shares, they will probably put the money into real estate. and ive been hearing a lot of negative sentiment online about home ownership lately, regarding mortgage, maintenance, taxes, etc., so now might be a good time to buy.

webdevver··on LinkedIn is loud, and corporate is hell
idk i like linkedin. every week i get emails about jobs they think i might be interested in and its pretty on point. nice to have a centralized place for job advertisements. before that, youd have to go on each website individually which was a pain.
webdevver··on Same-day upstream Linux support for Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5
yeah i had to inspect element and delete the html node. theres a double-space in the first line of the top summary section.

webdevver··on Java Decompiler
youre probably right... for the public market, anyway. blackhat state actors would probably not mind having something like that. but they'd never talk about it in public.

or maybe its not even neccesary, and doing something akin to fuzzing syscalls 'but smartly' probably yields more results.

webdevver··on Java Decompiler
it doesnt have to be traditional chat interface style.

why doens't someone train an LLM on predicting source code given a sequence of input machine code tokens? that is so obvious. why does nobody do it?

webdevver··on Java Decompiler
i have no idea why nobody is doing it - it is such an obvious use case of LLMs. i guess the reveng market is much smaller than most people realized?

then again, who needs reveng when you can use said LLMs to write new software "just in time" with the same API.

reveng also was one of those industries that always had a very suspicious crowd of people - i dont mean malicious, i mean... a lot of them drew a disturbing amount of pleasure from doing incredibly labourious work, sort of like someone who enjoys putting together an airfix model over many months with a microscopic brush and tweezers.

so i wonder if a lot of them perversely enjoy starting at reams of bytes and putting together this 10,000 piece puzzle, and having an llm solve it for them is a deep affront to their tastes.

webdevver··on Demand for UK Food Bank Up 15% Year on Year
i assume you left the uk - out of curiosity, where did you move to?
webdevver··on Demand for UK Food Bank Up 15% Year on Year
unfortunately a growing segment of people see food banks as a place where you can grab goodies for free, a-la 'you'd be stupid not to!'. i think they had a similar problem in Canada.

ultimately its a very politically difficult situation since you're entering the quagmire of what constitutes being poor. that's a discourse where political careers go never to return - easier to just throw your hands up in the air and just give everyone as much free food as they want.

ofcourse this then leads to the discussion of "wait... why don't we just do that anyway? arne't we a first world country?" but then you wind up with a whole enterprise of getting food for free (or steep discount) only to sell it to another community that doesn't have access to it and taking a profit. i think a similar problem (?) exists in the US, with SNAP food rations being (re?)-sold to latin americans.

webdevver··on X.com is gonna snitch you out to the public if you use a VPN
actually incredibly bullish for america.

everybody wants to be american. nobody with agency is rooting for anything other than the US. seriously, if youre not topblasting the S&P, i dont know what to tell you. theres like the entire 2nd and 3rd world combined waiting for their paycheque to come in every month so they can spend it on the US.

by 2100, we are gonna have a graveyard of langauges that nobody speaks anymore.
