web3-is-a-scam··on New GitHub Copilot research finds 'downward pressure on code quality'
The entire industry is BS all the way down
web3-is-a-scam··on New GitHub Copilot research finds 'downward pressure on code quality'
I cancelled my subscription after 2 months because I was spending way too much mental effort going over all of the code vomit fixing all of the mistakes. And it was basically useless when trying to deal with anything non-trivial or anything to do with SQL (even when I frontloaded it with my entire schema).

It was much less effort to just write everything myself because I actually know what I want to write and fixing my own mistakes was easier than fixing the bot’s.

I weep for the juniors that will be absolutely crushed by this garbage.

web3-is-a-scam··on Alpine Linux does not make the news
I’ve run into way too many issues with musl to consider it for anything serious. For containers I use debian-slim and it’s great (of course, it’s Debian after all).

web3-is-a-scam··on 6 days to change 1 line of code (2015)
> Haven’t you ever gotten a big PR from someone because their editor settings were different and they auto formatted a file differently than it was written before? This makes PRs a nightmare to differentiate between style and substantive changes.

I immediately reject those PRs. If your editor can’t format only changed lines you need a better editor. If you’re working on a task, changed lines should only be for what is necessary to implement it - nothing else.

web3-is-a-scam··on Why do so few people major in computer science? (2017)
I question the value of my CS degree to be honest. I haven’t used any of the advanced mathematics to the point that I’ve forgotten al of it, and any of the CS topics that I do touch on has been cursory at best. Anything major has al been stuff I learned on the job.

Which is the entire point of the first amendment. You don’t need to protect popular speech from censorship.
web3-is-a-scam··on Heat Pumps – The Well-Tempered Future of A/Cs
Not generalizing, just saying if you live in a place with more extremes in the climate than a heat pump may not be ideal.
web3-is-a-scam··on Heat Pumps – The Well-Tempered Future of A/Cs
My 20 year old air conditioner recently died and I was looking into replacements. In my climate the temperature ranges from 40C in the summer, and -40C in the winter. After doing some research, it seemed pretty clear that having a furnace+AC was the way to go for my climate. Hardly a magic bullet technology.
web3-is-a-scam··on Ottawa pulls advertising, escalating showdown with Facebook and Instagram
Nice. Less propaganda in my feed is a plus. Did they think this would somehow make me mad at Facebook? Thanks Zucc!
web3-is-a-scam··on Ask HN: What boosted your confidence as a new programmer?
Deploying changes that I’ve worked on and seeing things working in production. Terrifying at first, eventually it becomes a non-event - which boosts confidence.

web3-is-a-scam··on The 'fuck you' pattern (2021)
Instagram doesn’t even work for me, any link someone sends me just goes to a white blanks screen. I refuse to make an account so I just tell people to stop sending me those links because it’s just a waste of time.
web3-is-a-scam··on Has Xbox lost the console wars?
Why would Sony refuse to allow diablo 4, or call of duty for that matter, to appear on the PlayStation? The most contentious thing about the entire activision deal is the titles that currently release on PlayStation becoming exclusive to Microsoft platforms, there’s no chance Sony would ever block those games from their platform arbitrarily just silly business move.
web3-is-a-scam··on Has Xbox lost the console wars?
The funny thing is even as a consumer that understands all the confusing branding and power differences, I would still buy the cheaper system if it had compelling games to play compared to the PS5…it just doesn’t, and when it comes to first party titles everything Microsoft puts out is mid at best (Halo), or downright awful (Redfall). I also own a Nintendo Switch and I think I own more games on that than any other console I’ve owned in my entire life so raw power is t an issue for me. I want to want to buy an Xbox but the most important thing (games) just is t there. I may still buy one when Starfield comes out because it would be more expensive to build a gaming PC to play it (mac user), but I’m waiting to find out from reviews if it lives up to the (admittedly impressive from what they’ve shown) stuff they’ve shown off recently.

web3-is-a-scam··on I'm Not Invidious
This is silly. IANAL but if there’s no legally registered entity that owns the copyright and trademarks to the project, with code signed over with CLA then as far as I know the copyright belongs to all of the authors of the code by default. So to “whom it may concern” applies to everyone who has ever worked on the project.

He might not soely be invidious, but from a legal perspective I’d wager all of the contributors are, and a “nuh huh” is not gonna fly in court.

Isn’t faking use activity….fraud?

When you’re trying to gain traction on a new and free website it’s one thing (Reddit essentially started this way)…but if you’re trying to sell the company to investors this should be a crime.
