weakfish··on Ask HN: Is the Job Market Actually Bad?
Email in my bio, I’m in the triangle and would love to connect. I know some cyber folks who I can link you up with.
weakfish··on I have officially retired from Emacs
Why is the analysis bad? Burden is on you to explain that.
weakfish··on AI's economics don't make sense
> but I have yet to see Zitron respond to the strongest AI financials claim

He does in this [0] article.

Oh. Well I meant this as a counter point to the idea that AI can replace us.
weakfish··on Good sleep, good learning, good life (2012)
Late reply, but yeah it’s fatigue. Thank you for the pointers, I’ll check all of those out with my GP.

I have diagnosed depression, but I wonder if it’s a chicken egg problem - am I depressed from bad sleep, or bad sleep from depression?

weakfish··on Deezer says 44% of songs uploaded to its platform daily are AI-generated
I’ve also struggled with the “not enjoying something because I suck at it” problem, and it’s a tough one. The answer is to remove expectations, but much easier said than done.

That said, I wonder if doing it with other people who suck would help. I started playing ice hockey as an adult, and the thing that got me over the initial hump of being completely useless was doing lessons with other newbies in my exact shoes (or skates) rather than trying to go right to full speed games.

Something I don’t see “SWE-is-Doomed” comments address is this - SWE, I think we can all agree, is one of the more complex white collar jobs. If it gets automated, then likely most other white collar jobs have been too. At that point, don’t we have bigger problems?
weakfish··on The quiet disappearance of the free-range childhood
I’m also curious why you write “we in Phoenix are dealing with…”

I’ve noticed a trend of people attaching a sort of personal identification with headlines

weakfish··on Good sleep, good learning, good life (2012)
My comment is more of a complaint than a discussion so apologies, but I was disappointed recently because I did at an at home test and scored borderline. I was hopeful that it would be sleep apnea so I could go about solving my bad sleep, but a lab test showed conclusively that I didn’t have it.

I got checked out initially because I mentioned to my sister that I didn’t recall the last time I’d woken up and felt refreshed all day, even with 8+ hours, and she said “…that’s not good, get that checked out.”

Back to the drawing board :(

weakfish··on Native Instant Space Switching on macOS
I'm really confused - I downloaded Moom because of this comment, but can't find a feature to switch Spaces. Am I missing something?
weakfish··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
I found out something that was shocking to me about two years ago, which is that plenty of people learn to play ice hockey, of all sports, as an adult. I don’t know about you folks, but I always assumed it was one of those where if you didn’t play as a kid, you missed the boat. I didn’t even know how to skate, I learned on the fly. And this is in North Carolina! 10/10 recommend. I’m actually typing this lying on the couch after playing in a tournament in the Carolina Hurricanes arena :-)
weakfish··on Issue: Claude Code is unusable for complex engineering tasks with Feb updates
Didn’t ULTRATHINK get deprecated? Last time I typed it I got a warning.
weakfish··on OpenClaw privilege escalation vulnerability
Is it Ludditism to not want to get PWNed spending $3k a month?
weakfish··on Claude Code's source code has been leaked via a map file in their NPM registry
Is the thank you to Claude sarcasm? That seems like a fairly long logical leap, and LLMs have no ideological motivation
weakfish··on Don't Wait for Claude
> jc is open source. If you have improvements, have your Claude open a PR against mine. I don’t accept human-authored code.

Is this sarcasm? If not, I wonder why.

weakfish··on Hammerspoon
Hi! I'd be interested in contributing to V2 if you're open to it - is there something you need help with specifically?
weakfish··on Reports of code's death are greatly exaggerated
+1, it feels very much like a case of _feeling_ more productive because you’re outputting more …stuff…, but IME, it’s easy to produce a lot of stuff that isn’t useful and just creates a productive vibe (pun intended)
weakfish··on Astral to Join OpenAI
What happens when OpenAI’s burn dries up their cash?
weakfish··on Show HN: Claude Code skills that build complete Godot games
I think the software engineer types in this thread misunderstand what makes game developers tick. A lot of people here do game dev as a way to explore new ways to code. My sister is an indie dev and to her, code is an unavoidable means to an end (creating a game). So many games are absolutely spaghetti on the inside because the creator is deeply uninterested in the art of code. So to that end, LLMs are actually an awesome thing to enable creators to experiment more freely.

FWIW, I’m a platform engineer who is actively mourning the loss of reliability and care given to production code. I just think games aren’t an area where this is nearly as much of an issue.

weakfish··on Iran students stage first large anti-government protests since deadly crackdown
I don’t necessarily contest that, but I also wouldn’t trust the current administration to be the ones to succeed in that undertaking in a way that promotes lasting peace in the country/region. And no, I wouldn’t trust Biden/Obama/Bush either.
weakfish··on Iran students stage first large anti-government protests since deadly crackdown
Well of course it’s not black or white, it’s nuanced as everything in life is.

But my larger point is that I don’t trust the current US administration to engage in regime change in a beneficial way as perhaps the US admin in 1945 did. You’re right that those examples and some others are good ones. But I believe the odds are that this situation would be one of the worse ones.

Do I support the Iranian regime? Hell no! I just also don’t think the US invading is a solution that would bring long term peace and prosperity.

weakfish··on Iran students stage first large anti-government protests since deadly crackdown
That was 81 years ago. Iraq was 20. You’re either being willfully obtuse or don’t believe recency is more indicative.
weakfish··on Iran students stage first large anti-government protests since deadly crackdown
Idk, I’ve never seen any left wing folks actively support the Iranian regime. I think the difference is what you noted, the US support for Israel vs. intervention in Iran.

I, and many I know, would love to see the Iranian regime fall, just not via US regime change which tends to make things worse.

weakfish··on Zig – io_uring and Grand Central Dispatch std.Io implementations landed

weakfish··on OpenAI has deleted the word 'safely' from its mission
This comment doesn’t belong on this forum, even aside from the horrible lack of empathy
weakfish··on I asked Claude Code to remove jQuery. It failed miserably
Parent comment is a joke I think, but there’s something ironic (Poe’s law?) about it being possibly _not_ a joke
