wcummings··on Ask HN: Are any of you exploiting the ICO hype?
Anyone itt committing financial crimes?
wcummings··on One Billion Dollars Short, Bill Ackman, and the Siege Of Herbalife (2015)
Isn't that exactly what Ackman did?
wcummings··on Why the feds took down one of Bitcoin’s largest exchanges
It's only money laundering if the source of coins is illicit. You can legally tumble clean coins all day long.
wcummings··on 'Using Emacs' Series
Install ido-mode and projectile as a bare minimum. All these can be installed with M-x package-install, or you can do something like this https://github.com/wcummings/dotemacs/blob/master/modes/my-p... to automagically install your packages.

(setq ido-enable-flex-matching t) (setq ido-everywhere t) (setq ido-create-new-buffer 'always) (ido-mode 1)

(projectile-global-mode)

Maybe enable flycheck globally if you're used to syntax checking.

(global-flycheck-mode)

Also worth learning TRAMP if you're used to sshing into boxes and running vim. M-x info, C-s tramp.

Get rid of the waste of space toolbar:

  (tool-bar-mode -1)
And install a nice theme, whatever floats your boat, I use a solarized theme [1]. The default theme is gross.

  (setq custom-theme-directory "~/.emacs.d/theme")
  (setq custom-safe-themes t)
  (when (display-graphic-p)
    (load-theme 'my-solarized))
I use eshell, I think the plan9 smart shell features are nice:

  (require 'em-smart)
Basically includes additional editing features in eshell. It creates keybindings to edit previous commands and page through the output of commands.

Make CTRL L clear eshell

  (defun eshell/clear ()
    "Clear the eshell buffer"
    (interactive)
    (let ((inhibit-read-only t))
      (erase-buffer)
      (eshell-send-input)))

  (defun my-eshell-mode-hook ()
    (local-set-key (kbd "C-c e") 'end-of-buffer)
    (local-set-key (kbd "C-l") 'eshell/clear)
    (eshell-smart-initialize))

  (add-hook 'eshell-mode-hook 'my-eshell-mode-hook)
Line numbers, but only when you're editing code (GUI and text):

  (when (not (display-graphic-p))
    (setq linum-format "%4d | "))

  (defcustom linum-disabled-modes-list '(eshell-mode wl-summary-mode compilation-mode org-mode text-mode dired-mode doc-view-mode image-mode rcirc-mode)
"* List of modes disabled when global linum mode is on"
:type '(repeat (sexp :tag "Major mode"))
:tag " Major modes where linum is disabled: "
    :group 'linum)

;; override linum-on because there is no good way to disable global-linum-mode
  ;; on a per-mode basis
  (defun linum-on ()
    (unless (or (minibufferp)
                (member major-mode linum-disabled-modes-list)
                (string-match "*" (buffer-name))
                (> (buffer-size) 3000000))
 (linum-mode 1)))

wcummings··on Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack
Slack also has an IRC bridge which you could use with erc or rcirc.
wcummings··on Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack
CTRL R works in the "native" app.
wcummings··on Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack
IRC already has these, its just a matter of packaging it.

FWIW irccloud is a lot like slack but for IRC, they offer "team" accounts and hosting. No search, though.

wcummings··on Twitter Fails to Grow Its Audience Again
Twitter should fix lists, and make them collaborative.
wcummings··on Facebook Profit Jumps 71% Year-over-Year
Same, SnapChat is the only "social" app I use. I don't even use stories. Very few of my friends publish stories. I think mostly marketers use them.
wcummings··on Breaking open the Mt. Gox case, part 1
Years ago, it stated I was a creditor and was owed some comically tiny amount of BTC I had left in my account. Cool form factor, a sorta sticky postcard sized accordian you would pull apart, japanese on one side, english on the other.
wcummings··on How Liberal Professors Are Ruining College (2016)
I live in New England and this doesn't ring true for me. I think New England is very tolerant (even in the rural bits, which there are plenty of), and has a long history of tolerance, but I wouldn't confuse that with "liberalism". There's a ton of die-hard Democrat Catholics in New England, for example. I grew up Catholic, and I hardly associate it with liberalism, but I don't think I've ever met a Republican Catholic

Charlie Baker is exceptionally popular, fiscal conservatism is clearly not frowned upon. Reading the WSJ does not make you a pariah, but even the Republicans here don't like the national Republicans.

wcummings··on Breaking open the Mt. Gox case, part 1
>Can't wait to get my refund :)

I had like 0.000001 BTC in mtgox and it was worth it for the cute sticky unfoldy postcard thing I got from the Japanese court.

wcummings··on Ask HN: How is your standing desk working for you?
My back is fucked up from hard living, and a minor auto collision. Standing desk definitely helps, I stand exclusively when possible.

I have the opposite experience, if you're a fidget-y ADHD person, standing desks can be great. Sitting in a chair all day is torture.

Also invest in an anti-fatigue mat IMO.

wcummings··on The Acceleration of Addictiveness (2010)
Everything you said is also true of tobacco, or alcohol.
wcummings··on The Acceleration of Addictiveness (2010)
>What hard liquor, cigarettes, heroin, and crack have in common is that they're all more concentrated forms of less addictive predecessors

Interesting that he left out marijuana concentrates, the most recent example (in terms of widespread availability).

wcummings··on Largest Bitcoin mixer, Bitmixer.io, closes down
Businesses don't want their books to be public. Could even be an SEC violation if they leaked certain info through the blockchain. Some kind of greater anonymity will be required for business adoption, but that could mean something off-chain other than a mixer.
wcummings··on Largest Bitcoin mixer, Bitmixer.io, closes down
The act of using a mixer alone is not money laundering.
wcummings··on Ask HN: What do people use to prevent crawlers?
Scraping is my birthright, you'll never stop me.
wcummings··on What did Bitcoin Core contributors ever do for us?
>as a result Ethereum is catching up and on the verge of overtaking Bitcoin

Ironically, scaling ethereum seems a lot dicier than scaling BTC.

wcummings··on Facebook in talks with publishers on supporting subscription models
>I can't really justify subscribing to a single site

I hear this all the time, it has to be a side effect of getting all your news through facespace and other news aggregators. There's really only a handful of newspapers worth subscribing to (in the US), if you aren't reading at least one regularly enough that you'd pay for it if you had to, your money is pretty much no good. I'd expect to see more and more paywalls in the coming months/years, the economics are better, pandering to large volumes of low value readers is a race-to-the-bottom that won't support good journalism.

wcummings··on Yanni – An artificial neural network for Erlang
Ports are more about communicating with and managing the lifecycle of external processes in a structured way, if I understand correctly (I have lots of experience with NIFs and next to none with ports). It's not quite a FFI.

In the context of NIFs, long running could mean 100ms. The NIF API supports threads so you can always pass work to a thread pool and only block the scheduler thread for as long as it takes to acquire the lock on your queue. Or use dirty NIFs which I think are no longer experimental. There's also a new-ish function you can use to "yield" back to Erlang from a NIF but that kinda makes me nervous.

wcummings··on Stop writing PHP like it's 2009
As someone who writes java every day for work but deep down loves dynamic languages:

Static typing has value, but it's massively overstated IMO. Type-checking will only catch the most obvious bugs. Type-checking is mostly redundant with the tests I'm writing anyway, its pretty unlikely that a type error would ever make it to prod, so the benefits seem pretty questionable to me personally.

wcummings··on Stop writing PHP like it's 2009
SF will make a great looking crater.
wcummings··on Ask HN: What are scientifically valid ways maximize my life expectancy?
Smoke alcohol? What?
wcummings··on Show HN: Unix-like personal webpage
Emacs-like :)
wcummings··on Yanni – An artificial neural network for Erlang
FUD, long running NIFs won't crash your VM, just block scheduler cores and mess up the real-time-y-ness of your application.
wcummings··on Lessons from my first year of live coding on Twitch
I can't stand video howtos. You can't skim a video, or search the text of a video. They seem especially irrelevant in the world of text editors. I'd rather read the keystrokes on a doc/webpage. You could even open it right in the editor.
wcummings··on Sending form data made easy with – diver.js
HOT TAKE - code reuse is good and all that, but I think there's a pressure to produce "open source" code that causes people to publish things that might be useful to them but are not entirely relevant.
wcummings··on Judge rules Utah law banning undercover farm filming is unconstitutional
Maybe they show up and fight for your life but that's not a universal experience. Some people and communities rationally fear and dislike police officers.
wcummings··on What Is Ethereum?
If you want a laugh, read the ethereum sharding document.
