The data aren’t there, you aren’t an expert, and this argument doesn’t help anyone. That’s the most positive read I can give what I consider to be a reckless take, and this take will be EVERYWHERE in the next few weeks. We need to guard ourselves because this take is deceptive; it lets us feel superior to everyone who is freaking out, which will help individuals calm down at the expense of public health.
We need to inoculate ourselves from this argument because we are about to see it everywhere. Confirmation bias par excellence
So, is there a solution in there that doesn't leverage government, or are we going to continue to complain about the baldly positive sides of government because "government bad, situation too complex"?
I very much agree, we don't have a complex understanding of the issue here, so maybe we should stop attacking it.
And if we do believe you are an amoral monster, which I do not, what does that say about what we believe about people worse than you?
If you are near our best, which you probably are, how else can we hope to help people than by leveraging government? It should be quite clear to everyone that personal donations do not even come close to covering need.
I will not continue to argue with you though as this argument is not worth considering any longer.
I need to get out of here before someone accuses me of controlling hollywood. this place went to the rats
Edit: after taking a quick look, it would seem that this user comes to HN to post bigoted arguments with little to no facts, just hate. it seems like HN is totally ok with this user continuing to spread hate.
If you really think that the economic effects outweigh the loss of life this virus can and will cause, all I can do is be glad that all you have is your ability to express your opinion, not the ability to do anything about it. Thank god for that.
Finally, and yes I'm quoting myself here "If you do not have another solution that keeps people alive, kindly be quiet; you have nothing important to say."
> Kindly keep the nasty comments about trying to dissuade me from discussing these important topics to yourself.
This is absurd; you're responding to me. And this isn't a discussion, these are opinions, with no facts to back them up. I simply find these opinions disgusting, as they do not prioritize keeping people healthy and alive.
If you do not have another solution that keeps people alive, kindly be quiet; you have nothing important to say.
This is the first sentence of the article. It then goes on to attack our society for deciding that public health is more important than the economy.
This is straight garbage. The virus will kill, that is reality. We only have a small set of interventions to attack it. The economy can be managed as we see fit. It does not follow the laws of biology or physics.
Posting articles like this is evil and will get people killed.
This crap shouldn’t be on HN. This forum has become next to useless, slowly, then all at once in the last few weeks. I would assert that this community could do better, but at this point maybe it can’t.
Comments like these are cratering any value the HN forums used to have. Please stop for the good of the community.
It would be really nice to hear compassion instead of worry about money. How about we keep people alive, then deal with the economy? Something tells me the country that can burn $2T in less than a week will be just fine until this passes. Talking about the long term health of the economy in terms that push people out into unsafe situations, when we have a virus that kills people in 3 weeks, borders on evil.
There is one way to solve the virus problem: social isolation. There are infinite ways to solve made up economic problems we foist on ourselves.
It would be super cool if we all took the time to cite data that back up our assertions instead of just insisting that our ideas are correct.
Please stop
I don’t think it’s helpful to dismiss other commenters based upon simply your opinion, and not a set of facts we can all inspect together.
http://sensesofcinema.com/2017/cteq/raising-arizona/ and https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2014/09/30... discuss this well. https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.5325/studamerhumor.3.1.0001?... looks to be interesting, but is paywalled. Either way, Raising Arizona seems to me to be some great cultural commentary.
> A thread about the subtleties of Korean culture revealed in Gangham Style? Read a book.
That too sounds like an interesting idea: https://www.amazon.com/Theological-Reflections-Gangnam-Style...
Put another way: making something illegal does not solve the problem, and asserting that does does makes it harder to solve problems.
In any case, anec-data is not useful for argumentation.
It can be (and is) true that you can be the luckiest baby in history and have "crippling illness". You can both be privileged and disadvantaged on different axes at the same time.
I think you misunderstand racism and sexism. These refer to power structures that oppress people, not inborn disadvantages.
I would posit that it is the same here; wage fixing is bad and punished, but wouldn't it be better if we had a faster mechanism for guaranteeing equity in treatment by corporations?
