wbronitsky··on Things from leaked audio of Mark Zuckerberg and his employees
I do not think we should make people who spread hate feel comfortable spreading that hate. The president is unequivocally spreading hate and inciting violence. He should not be able to do that when doing that is against the TOS of the site he is doing it on. Said another way, why does he get to incite violence on twitter, yet I do not?

There is a distinct difference between expressing a political view, such as that we should have the government spend less money, and inciting random citizens to commit violent acts against a perceived enemy.

wbronitsky··on Facebook employes planning virtual walkout ovr Zkerbrg's inaction on Trump posts
I empathize with this a bit; it has been super frustrating to me to be exposed to what I consider subpar sources.

However, after quite a few frustrations with this site, I read a lot of dang's comments about the nature of this site. He says, in a different and much more eloquent way, that it is tough for people to see different views that they disagree with vehemently after they thought that HN was a home to them. It shocks and hurts people, and it did so to me for quite some time.

I feel like a corollary to this idea is that this site, HN, is for everyone, not individual users. It is unsharded, with no bubbles of opinion to retreat to. There are plenty of sites where you can moderate what you see to a great extent; this site is not one of them and is at the same time more difficult to digest and many times substantively better than other sites. Not all sites need to provide you exactly what each of us wants; in fact, this site is made to challenge our perspectives. At the same time, the humble "hide" button does exist here.

thank you, dang. Your writing is amazing and has completely changed my perspective on the nature of this forum. I appreciate your hard work and am sorry for my ignorant responses in the past.

wbronitsky··on How to Make this Moment the Turning Point for Real Change
This reply elides the fact that there are quite a few American police officers who have killed American citizens in similar circumstances to this one who are free and have never been convicted.

Yes, it would be great if the law worked as we intended it to. Yet it does not, and to suggest that we continue to sit here while these police officers continue to murder people undermines the ability of the people who are being murdered to stop it.

wbronitsky··on US customs and border protection is flying a surveillance drone over Minneapolis
> If someone is unhappy about not being listened to and their response is to burn down half a neighborhood in my city maybe there was a good reason we weren’t listening to everything they had to say.

They were saying “don’t kill me”. This argument is blatantly racist.

wbronitsky··on US customs and border protection is flying a surveillance drone over Minneapolis
It’s is wildly racist that this comment, and many other comments on here, are far more focused on the rioters than the murder that occurred on a sidewalk in broad daylight.
wbronitsky··on Antibody Tests Point to Lower Death Rate for the Coronavirus Than First Thought
How many of those people who died from cancer and heart diseased are aged 18-45? These numbers are largely irrelevant if we dont compare them apples-to-apples with the numbers in their proper cohort.

In any case, these tactics, namely cherry-picking, callousness towards human life, and flippant dismissal of the points of others, make it very hard to have a discussion here. It does not seem like the posts are being made to debate but instead pummel into submission.

Finally, there have been over 100,000 Covid-19 deaths in the US. Each one of them a human who could have not died from Covid-19.

wbronitsky··on A third of Americans now show signs of clinical anxiety or depression
Thank you for posting the data. These are both brand new from yesterday, however, so I’m not sure why the tone here is so belligerent. Either way, this is incredibly interesting, and something we should continue to look into going forward. It sure would be nice to ease up on the lockdowns if they are not the correct path going forward.
wbronitsky··on A third of Americans now show signs of clinical anxiety or depression
Where do you see the data that 80% of people are asymptomatic? You complain elsewhere in this thread of being dismissed even when you have data, yet provide none.

We understand that you think that the lockdowns are bunk and that this is a big non-issue cooked up by the world to ruin our lives; sure, maybe, but where is the data?

wbronitsky··on A No. 1 hit vanished from Poland’s charts – it’s not going quietly
> FWIW I'm an American living in Poland since 2 years ago, though I'm participating only as a spectator and I don't have a political horse in this race

I find these two comments a bit hard to reconcile, as the second comment implies that this person is not an “American” with no “political horse in this race”.

wbronitsky··on Tell HN: Triplebyte reverses, emails apology
I wholeheartedly agree. I can not reconcile this apology with the blatant use of dark patterns they employed when trying to roll out this product.
wbronitsky··on Tell HN: Triplebyte reverses, emails apology
Wow, this reads as incredibly disingenuous considering the glaring dark patterns they were using to try and sell your private data and make more money. I cannot reconcile this apology with the underhanded tactics the CEO was using to promote this now cancelled feature.
wbronitsky··on Tell HN: Interviewed with Triplebyte? Your profile is about to become public
Does it matter what you think here though? Your customers gave you their data under one pretense, why do you think you can ethically change that pretense without discussing it with your customers? Said another way, you entered into a business deal with your customers and unilaterally changed the terms. I feel like if someone did that to you, you would be upset as well.

People in this thread have carefully laid out the dark patterns you are using to trick your customers into allowing you to try and make more money. This is wildly unethical, and coming to defend it on here shows us clearly that you have not thought about this from any perspective but your own.

Good luck with your company, you’re going to need it.

wbronitsky··on California voters to get mail-in ballots for 2020 election
This thread has two or three very vocal, antagonistic and ignorant actors using lazy rhetorical tactics to agitate, deflect and confuse what is a very straightforward topic: mail in voter fraud doesn’t exist and aggressive attempts to say it does are a part of a large, discriminatory and frankly old set of tactics of voter intimidation. These posters offer no evidence of the fraud they are FUDing up because there is none.
wbronitsky··on ‘We Are Not Essential. We Are Sacrificial.’
You just don’t like my response so instead of responding to me you chastise me and call me names. It seems a bit ironic to do such a thing by calling me “juvenile.”

I tend not to enjoy discussions where the other party mandates what I can and cannot talk about; I would assume most people feel the same way. I don’t have to discuss the extremely narrow view you have; you cannot my force my views.

Tell the NYC transportation workers who died that going to work isn’t a life or death situation. It would seem to me that people are being blocked from spreading a virus that kills people. I’m willing to bet that the “greatest country in the world” can figure out how to feed its population without sending them into grave danger. Again, though, these solutions do need imagination.

The articles written about CEO pay cuts are PR puff pieces intended to placate us into not taking back what the oligarchs have stolen from us.

wbronitsky··on Against pandemic research exceptionalism
Please stop insisting we have evidence when none exists.

My question was: do we have evidence that warm weather slows Covid outbreaks?

So far, the answer is “no”, and asserting anything else is not an argument, it’s a made up story.

wbronitsky··on Against pandemic research exceptionalism
Do you have any data to support the assertion that higher temperatures help calm Covid rates? Seeing as Singapore is having an extremely tough time right now, I don’t think you do. This is pure supposition.
wbronitsky··on Tesla stock plunged after Elon Musk tweeted it was “too high”
This thread is just low effort trolling at this point. Maybe that New Yorker article really ruined this forum for good?
wbronitsky··on Gates Foundation will commit 'total attention' to coronavirus pandemic
Just so we can all see what is going on here, I’ve vouched for you one last time.

I believe the way shadowbanning works here is that your account is in a state where most people cannot see or reply to your comments. If someone chooses to see [dead] comments, which is a bit on their profile, they can “vouch” for such comments. They then seem to be reply-able and visible to all.

I was trying to explain something about your account state to you that you could not see yourself, as I saw some merit in your posts. I was mistaken in doing that and this is the last time I’ll interact with you.

A thought: if after 9 hours you are still bothered by something someone you will never, ever meet or know, has said in a comment on the internet, a change of perspective could be helpful. Have a good day, pdubs1

wbronitsky··on Are we too busy to enjoy life?
Living in the Bay Area, I find the food scene amazing. I do, however, find the food scene in San Francisco bland and repetitive.

The same pattern holds for cultural activities and the outdoors; SF has the same things over and over again, while the Bay Area as a whole has an abundance of options to fill your life with. I have also found that many people who move to San Francisco spend 99%+ of their time in SF.

I do agree with your sentiments about what a large amount of people in the Bay Area want to spend their time thinking and talking about. I stopped going to parties years ago after I couldn’t find a conversation that wasn’t about how this dude worked at Apple.

wbronitsky··on Gates Foundation will commit 'total attention' to coronavirus pandemic
You’re shadowbanned, just FYI

Edit: you’re not understanding me. People on HN cannot see your posts unless someone vouches for them. I vouched for 2, but I can now see that was a mistake and you are shadowbanned for a reason, and that is because you are acting like a jerk.

wbronitsky··on Millions of Americans can't afford food, rent and other basics, report finds
People are going hungry because they live in food deserts. The GP has proved this and you dismiss it. Why would people make this argument if people weren’t actually going hungry?
wbronitsky··on Millions of Americans can't afford food, rent and other basics, report finds
This argument elides the fact that the US government is giving away plenty of money that these people could use on food and rent. They are just giving it to people who don’t need it.

While you’re busy arguing that the shutdown is the problem, our government is literally giving the taxpayers’ money to billionaires.

wbronitsky··on Some overwhelmed parents are abandoning at-home schooling
This is a racist dog whistle.
wbronitsky··on Asian American Discrimination in Harvard Admissions [pdf]
This is exactly how we should be dealing with the issue of hateful, bad faith actors in this community; point them out and tell them they don’t belong. Thank you for posting this, truly. We will never beat back the hate that has consumed this site without action like this. Shame on the mods for continuing to use the “we didn’t see it argument.” It no longer holds water
wbronitsky··on Asian American Discrimination in Harvard Admissions [pdf]
This one isn’t hard Dang. Post the Algolia link all you want, this community is rife with obvious examples of spreading hate and deadly misinformation. You’re not doing enough to keep this a safe place for open discussion
wbronitsky··on Lung damage in recovered Covid sufferers apparently permanent, research finds
It is incredibly difficult to read posts like this in good faith. More and more people come here to tell us not to believe facts, to disregard what our eyes and ears tell us. It is not hard to connect the dots

wbronitsky··on Facebook/CMU Covid-19 U.S. county-by-county symptom map
