wazoox··on World's biggest RC A380 [video]
AFAIK the only existing small jet engines for RC planes are much too small for this one.
wazoox··on Neanderthals ran 'fat factories' 125k years ago (2025)
The minuscule sample of tools we have are more primitive, but we don't have any examples of their wooden tools, nor any trace of most of their activities, languages, rites, etc. They could have invented animal husbandry and wool spinning and build awesome wooden cities and we have no way to know because everything would have disappeared without a trace, crushed by glaciers of later ages. We know almost nothing of them.

Ah ah I was asked by my boss to repair his work laptop after windows shat itself, and the porn stash was one of the first thing to become restored among his work documents
wazoox··on The Downgrading of the American Tech Worker
Yup. Good ol' Karl Marx called this process proletarianisation.
wazoox··on Talkie: a 13B vintage language model from 1930
It was the official name of Istanbul up until 1930 (in Turkish, Kostantiniyye).
wazoox··on Talkie: a 13B vintage language model from 1930
Yep. Until the very recent boom of social networks, everything published is, by definition, the product of the educated and the upper classes. The farther back you're going, the more estranged from ordinary people you are. In the Middle Ages, you'll have nothing but texts about the adventures of saints and kings.
wazoox··on Networking changes coming in macOS 27
NFS works way better than SMB, but the Finder is not without its troubles. Sometimes it will take 10 minutes to display a folder for reasons, mostly.

The Finder is really an horrible piece of sh*t of software, slow as hell, doesn't provide the most basic information[1], and, of course, doesn't work properly when browsing network shares either SMB or NFS.

[1]virtually all common file browsers (Windows Explorer, Gnome Nautilus, KDE dolphin) displays at all times : the number of files in the current folder, their size, the number of files selected, their size; also all but the Finder have a "recent files" section that actually contains the latest files used, while the Finder displays a completely random selection of recent files, but never the most recently used ones.

wazoox··on Networking changes coming in macOS 27
Yeah but AFP is still performing way better than SMB on Mac for any fast networking. Like 10GigE and faster. Apple SMB stack is a disaster, and thoroughly unprofessional. NFS is faster, too, but unfortunately the Finder, being the rat nest of bugs it is, has often trouble with NFS shares.
wazoox··on What killed the Florida orange?
The whole article insists on the insect, but the conclusion is very different:

What did he think of all this, I asked him. What happened to the Florida orange?

“I think they killed it themselves, with chemicals. That’s a fact,” Gunther said. In my time in Florida, I’d found a more complicated story, but down here, everyone had their theories, their longing for citrus nirvana, and their anger at the loss.

“They sprayed so much chemicals, the damn grass don’t even grow here anymore—you can quote me,” Gunther said. “I knew it back in 1990. I said, ‘They’re sprayin’ so much chemicals it’s gonna be the end.’ And it’s the end.”

wazoox··on FIM – Linux framebuffer image viewer
Ah yes, back in 2004/2005 I got an old laptop (Pentium 200 or something like that) for free that wasn't fast enough to reliably read videos with X11, but it worked fine as a movie watching device for my children using mplayer in FB mode :)
wazoox··on Filing the corners off my MacBooks
My aluminium body Lenovo IdeaPad has exactly the same problem.
wazoox··on The MacBook Neo
A very important point is the RAM and flash shortage. With their humongous volumes, Apple is certainly a member of the happy few with preferential contracts with guaranteed volumes and prices. No other PC maker can remotely compete with Apple on volumes, and now they'll get their already thin margins crushed even more.

In the past Apple had constantly sold high-margin products and grabbed 70 to 80% of the whole industry's margins. Now they're coming for the rest !

wazoox··on The Case of the Disappearing Secretary
When the CEO of our company left after a merge in 1999, his executive assistant was forgotten in the ensuing turmoil and the move of the company 's headquarters from a city to another. She just kept her office in front of the empty CEO office for months, playing Solitaire on her computer with nothing to do, until someone remarked her.
wazoox··on AI is making junior devs useless
Sort of. With the salient point that nothing really exists, but the commons. The individual is nothing without the whole society around.
wazoox··on The Physics and Economics of Moving 44 Tonnes at 56mph
Also, heavy lorries are responsible for almost all of the road wear, and are therefore heavily subsidised by other road users. The whole system feels like insanity, if you ask me.
wazoox··on I pitched a roller coaster to Disneyland at age 10 in 1978
In 2000 I was in a startup which used yellow and blue colours for all its graphic design (website, app, etc). For a big trade show (IBC Amsterdam) someone thought it would be cool to give away M&Ms, but only in yellow and blue of course ! So we bought many bags of M&Ms, and sorted them out by hand... That wasn't a good use of our time, plus we had tons of red, brown and green M&Ms to eat while working and we were getting diabetic fast. So Marie called Mars to ask if it was possible to buy only yellow and blue M&Ms for our trade show. And you know what happened? Mars sent us a huge bag of each colour for free !

In the following years, they made it possible to order custom M&Ms (for a price...) and how you can even have your logo on them.

wazoox··on Firefox 148 Launches with AI Kill Switch Feature and More Enhancements
The chatbot sidebar is lacking one important feature, the ability to use your locally running LLMs. I had to install "Page Assist" to reproduce its functionality using my local ollama instance.
wazoox··on Step 3.5 Flash – Open-source foundation model, supports deep reasoning at speed
Have you heard of Pleias ? Their SML baguettotron is blazingly fast, and surprisingly good at reasoning (but it's not programming-oriented).

wazoox··on Show HN: Free alternative to Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, and Monologue
I've installed murmure on my 2013 Mac, and it works through 1073 words/minute. I don't know about you, but that's plenty faster than me :D
wazoox··on Show HN: Geo Racers – Race from London to Tokyo on a single bus pass
So here I am, it's frozen there: https://demo.intellique.org/nextcloud/index.php/apps/files_s...

You can see several problems : I've deselected bus stations, boat stations, etc but they're still displayed. Time is frozen, my bus isn't coming, I'm stuck in Almeria, too bad !

Here's what's in the console:

Uncaught TypeError: can't access property "geometry", xe is undefined
        lr App.vue:984
        callback App.vue:2183
        rr App.vue:894
    App.vue:984:25
wazoox··on Show HN: Geo Racers – Race from London to Tokyo on a single bus pass
Nitpicks :

* If there's a time limit, there's no way to know. I'm currently on my 3rd day travelling :) * I was waiting for my bus and I had forgotten the exact time. There is no way to know until it starts :) * While riding the bus I can't seem to be able to push speed over 100x. A Paris-Barcelona bus ride is long, even at 100x :) Later on a second bus, I could. Weird... * You should explain that "banks", "bus stations" etc are special game icons, not actual banks and bus stops on the map :) I was in Paris trying to change money in the "money exchange" at Gare du Nord, and I tried a while to do something until I understood that you can only use the special "Bank" icons. * In Almeria, the busses look like the regular city network. I tried taking one, but the game is now frozen... It's time for my bus, but nothing happens.

wazoox··on Show HN: Geo Racers – Race from London to Tokyo on a single bus pass
Too bad apparently you can't ride bus and metro in London, Paris, etc.

wazoox··on The New Collabora Office for Desktop
I'm currently working on a set of documents with 3 or 4 other people in collabora and we have no more problems than with office 365. It works. You can type simultaneously even in the same line (one types while another corrects the spelling of the previous word, etc), no problem at all.
