wayn3··on Mice fed a time-restricted, high-fat diet show reduced metabolic disease (2012)
some math:

1 gram of carbs equals 4 calories.

1 gram of protein equals 4 calories.

When metabolized, however,

carbohydrates yield 5x the ATP proteins do. 1 gram of carbs is 5x as "rich in energy" as 1 gram of proteins. In spite of them being billed as equal.

A tablespoon of sugar yields about as much energy as a pound of chicken breast.

Then we go into fat. People think fat makes them fat. The truth is, ingested fat can not be turned into bodyfat directly. It is way easier for the body to turn carbs into fat than it is to turn fat into fat.

"Diet" products that extract fat from milk products, like yoghurt, and replace them with sugar, which makes the product less calorically dense, nominally, literally makes people more fat - AND is billed as a diet alternative.

Everything. the. media. says. is. wrong.

Everything.

And this isn't arcane knowledge acquired from some hermit. Its literally on wikipedia. One click away. Google ATP, or adenosinetriphosphate, and read the whole page. you will know more about diet than most dieticians.

When I talked to my physician about these things, initially, they didnt know those basic facts either. All the knowledge we've got about how to lose weight is buried and ignored by bullshit.

Simple facts that, if applied, make people lose weight. Caloric restriction is bs. Carb restriction is key. You can literally eat until your stomach hurts all day long and lose weight. Its what Ive done.

wayn3··on Ask HN: What's your company on-call setup?
I truly don't get what kind of company is expecting software engineers to be on call.

What do they even want you to do about issues clients have with software? If the software is down for some reason, call devops. Or call AWS. I don't care.

If there's a bug, its not going to get fixed at 4am by one person pushing a hotfix through production. Although if thats how bugs get fixed at your company, maybe you should revisit whether thats a good approach to devops and when you find that its bs, you can finally abolish "on-call rotation".

"btw, you're on-call.." "if I wanted to be on call, I'd be in medicine."

wayn3··on We Bought a Crack House
wouldn't that make the problem worse?

"i'm just a front-end dev but i read this article on medium about smart contracts and the syntax looked familiar so i thought i could just cobble together a smart bank over the weekend and now all my ethereum is gone pls halp"

wayn3··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
Can you rephrase that? I don't get what you're trying to say.
wayn3··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
they are reflected in the data. as outliers.
wayn3··on Estimating a nuclear blast with bits of paper
about 1/3rd of a mile? weird units are weird :P
wayn3··on Estimating a nuclear blast with bits of paper
glass does block ultraviolet light, which makes it effective protection.
wayn3··on Estimating a nuclear blast with bits of paper
the bomb does not explode "near" the ground.

the relatively small bombs of hiroshima and nagsaki exploded about a mile above ground. the goal here is to make the shockwaves double up near the ground, causing more destruction.

i'd assume that bigger bombs would detonate at higher altitudes to achieve the same effect further out.

wayn3··on Estimating a nuclear blast with bits of paper
- if you "see" the flash, thats the last thing youre ever going to see. will blind you.

- thermal radiation is, in fact, light, which travels at the speed of light - but you should not imagine the entirety of the thermal energy to be released by a nuclear weapon to be released instantaneously in a radially travelling sphere. that being said, youre not going to outrun such an explosion. where you are at the time of detonation pretty much determines your odds of survival.

wayn3··on A list of practical projects that anyone can solve in any programming language
all of which have prime factors ;)

besides, you may as well consider 1 a prime factor. the task is just a silly programming toy problem. 1 not being prime is pure definition, including 1 in the primes would not materially change the definition of primes. just make a lot of advanced math tedious to write down.

wayn3··on A list of practical projects that anyone can solve in any programming language
and "1" does not, so the thing youre trying to be pedantic about isnt even wrong.
wayn3··on Theresa May says the internet must now be regulated after London terror attack
a comparable to "muslims" would be "all the christians". if you want some examples of christians blowing up the shit out of each other, try ireland.

I dont think that relatives of Eric Harris would have ever said "oh yea, that kids trouble. going to shoot up a school some day".

pretty lame argument youve got.

there are clearly more radicalized general idiots out there than there are radicalized muslims.

wayn3··on New US visa requires applicants for social media handles from the last 5 years
people who stay in $300+ rooms dont stay in airbnb just because its available.

airbnb rooms of comparable luxury are rarely cheaper than hotels.

wayn3··on New US visa requires applicants for social media handles from the last 5 years
when I did esta 2 weeks ago social media hadnt been mentioned
wayn3··on An alarm about the influence of standardized tests on American society
its a waste of human capital to learn something you know you wont ever enjoy just to get into university.

a system based on such bullshit is immoral.

wayn3··on Ask HN: Devops-is the future just handing a dockerfile to container services?
that makes those who do have them so appealing.
wayn3··on Tesla fires female engineer who alleged sexual harassment
well, i was talking about sexual harassment. not hurt feelings.

this whole freedom from discomfort movement is going to blow up some day when nobody can say a word anymore because its going to offend someone.

but i do believe in certain topics not belonging in certain places. that includes both "locker room talk" and "extreme feminism".

wayn3··on A laptop ban would be a disruptive privacy risk
the entire nato is at war with whereever the USA is dropping bombs this week.

calling a country "civilised" is difficult because youre implicitly calling other countries uncivilised.

wayn3··on Ask HN: Devops-is the future just handing a dockerfile to container services?
"or career building" is an undersold point.

for some reason, hopping onto the hypetrain and shitting out a github repo over the weekend that does the minimally possible thing for a really new technology is about as much career building as having been the PM responsible for google maps.

"having a repo" is somewhat equal to claiming non-"provable" 5 years of experience.

wayn3··on Tesla fires female engineer who alleged sexual harassment
its pretty difficult to argue that female sexual rights are not fundamental human rights when youve already established that liberty itself is "proven by political philosophy".

"liberty is a fundamental human right unless youre born the wrong sex and want to govern your private parts"

wayn3··on Ask HN: Trying to land a 100% remote job, how risky are contract-to-hire gigs?
from my experience, contracts work like this:

- some person in the organization - usually some PM or VP or some other management type - politics for getting budget. some finance person approves budget. the person who requested the budget "hires" you.

employment works like this:

- the same person politics for headcount, reads resumes, employs some kind of interview process, gets HR involved. HR has quite an opinion on who can be hired and who can not, and they are not at all about ability.

If you move from a contract to employment, you still go through HR. HR won't even touch your contract situation. Doesn't matter to them.

That being said, if anything, you should earn MORE on a contract than on fulltime employment. Employment is cheaper than contracts.

If 85k would be your target salary, they should be paying you an easy 60/hour on a contract.

If I was you, I'd understand this as 3 months of cheap labor into "sorry bro, HR nixed the headcount, good luck".

You NEVER budge on compensation. Maybe if Elon interviewed you for neuralink and gave you 3% of the company. Because you know its going to be worth a trillion dollars some day. That'd be the only reason I'd ever leave some cash on the table.

Don't let these clowns fool you into believing that you should earn less working remotely. You should be making more, if anything. When you work remotely, they save office space and office space is expensive. If you save them office space, that should go in your pocket. It never will, but thats how you should think about it.

edit: promises are worse than worthless. youll only get exactly whats in your contract, and nothing more.

wayn3··on Ask HN: Why isn't F# more popular?
Doesn't change the fact that javascript is shit.
wayn3··on Ask HN: Why isn't F# more popular?
i didnt say that people dont use it BECAUSE its good. that its good simply doesnt matter to them.

almost nobody is using erlang. one of the best languages out there.

wayn3··on Ask HN: Why isn't F# more popular?
javascript is insanely popular and its obviously shitty. popularity correlates very lightly with quality.
wayn3··on Ask HN: Books to learn applied maths?
applied maths is a big field. is there anything in particular that is interesting to you?

halliday is a book on experimental physics. it takes a phenomenological approach because thats how experimental physics works. theres nothing "applied" about it.

wayn3··on Ask HN: How would you take this business to the next level?
I'd be interested in taking a look at it. What are your long-term goals?
wayn3··on Ask HN: How did you build business as a freelancer?
step 1: call yourself consultant. freelancers are bottom-feeding randos who try to sell to budgetless SMBs.

step 2: you are now running a business. your #1 priority is to sell services, not to actually provide them. sell your skills, outsource as much as possible. just bill extra for design and then hire someone to do the designs.

step 3: ???

step 4: profit

wayn3··on Ask HN: How could YouTube know about friend's heart attack?
doesnt mean that slack shared his data. if you use slack through chrome, google has your slack data and youtube is part of google.
wayn3··on What I've learned from 100s of interviews with candidates at top tech companies
- The more 'real-world' this is, the more it's going to be biased towards those that have experience in a particular stack or with a particular type of development. Which isn't necessarily bad (it could even be good!), but it may be if you want a more agnostic interviewing process.

I fail to see how that particular point can ever be a negative for the hiring company. If you need specific skills, you dictate the environment. If you want the candidate to bring his own skills, just tell him to pick his favourite tools.

wayn3··on As Computer Coding Classes Swell, So Does Cheating
I'm not talking about Theses. I'm talking about "übungszettel".

I'm aware of the fact that bavaria takes a bit of a harsher stance on this.

In Heidelberg, nobody gives even the slightest crap about "cheating". But as I said, it isn't considered cheating anyway. Students are expected to collaborate on these things.
