watter··on Stop Guessing Languages Based on IP Address
Google Maps also does something like this. Open a maps tab in Winnipeg and it will show you downtown Calgary if the ISP is Shaw Communications. Twitter even started recommending I follow former Prime Minister Stephen Harper because he represented a Calgary riding. I don't live in either of these cities.

Would you have the same problem with a single person who is sexually active? I've been single most of my adult life so you'd basically be calling the cops on me for being a regular citizen doing legal things.
watter··on Ask HN: Is there a powerful open-source Google Calendar replacement?
I love Fastmail's timezone handling. Hands-down best I have ever used. Thank you!

Hit piece rerun.
watter··on Desperate John Deere tractor owners downloading illegal Ukrainian firmware hacks
John Deere always promoted the idea that you should be all-in with them. I know a lot of farmers absolutely hate them.

Local dealerships most likely. The town I lived in had 3-4 different dealers 30 years ago, at best they have 1-2 now. A lot of the non-chain shops were run out of business (probably often by their own accord, but not always) just like in other industries.

They have been on this path a long time. I grew up in the midwest and 30 years ago I remember there were "John Deere" farms and those farmers refused to buy anything else. Deere's marketing echoed this sentiment. The rest of the farmers had a mix of other brands, but almost never a Deere, because the reasoning was that you find the best product regardless of brand. There could also be an aspect of protest over quality, but in general I still believe Deere to be a little less than the other companies who often specialize in doing one thing (type of tractor) really well. It is probably obvious at this point I grew up on an anti-Deere farm but we eventually did buy one of their lawnmowers.

yes but "these days" they have greater reach so we all have to listen to the crazies more often (constantly)
watter··on Canada to announce marijuana will be legal by July 1, 2018
They promised it last year. A lot of people, including current health permit (authorized) users have been complaining that nothing has happened since last April. It might have won him the last election but I don't know the numbers (probably nobody does).
watter··on Canada to announce marijuana will be legal by July 1, 2018
The estimates of the underground market ranged from 1 to 3 Billion per year in the cannabis economy when I lived there. It is a substantial industry there which means a LOT of people in that province work in the black market.

At least we don't call our MPs "lawmakers", that term is so bizarre to me.

I give the forms junk data now to make it expensive for them to maintain. I only ever hit the form once, but I have heard of people writing bots to hammer these forms in the realm of hundreds or thousands of submissions.
watter··on Two Executives to Leave Uber, Adding to Departures
For me this can be problematic in my second language, and near-impossible in my third, fourth, and fifth languages. I travel a lot and it is the only time I ever use Uber.

Since it is only available in English I can only presume it is some American Prince trying to repatriate Nigerian money.
watter··on Bad SSL

watter··on Bad SSL
Actually I am a developer and this is useful to my work so it is targeted exactly at someone like me. It would still help to have a description without going to github.

Just some /constructive/ feedback...

watter··on Bad SSL
It should at LEAST say it is targeting the browser for the tests, not someone's ssl site. I had no idea it was testing my phone until I went to the other test site link in the footer. I can't believe you go to such length defending the "UX" when it isn't even obvious what the test is for. Seriously.
watter··on Bad SSL
It took me going to this page to understand what was going on, I assumed it was a web server test. The report was more pratical too, telling me what I'm protected against, not just a bunch of yes/no things that I have to go reference. I'm on a phone in portrait mode though so maybe it is just a formatting thing.
