wasd··on Why is Amazon all of a sudden not re-investing all its profits?
On the eaernings call, they mentioned they purchased and would be purchasing more trucks airplanes.
wasd··on Ask HN: What's the most elegant piece of code you've seen?
I love the story of the fast inverse square root. A bizzare piece of code from quake 3 shows up on usenet with a magic constant that calculates the inverse square root faster than table lookups and approximately four times faster than regular floating point division. Inverse square roots are used to compute angles of incidence and reflection for lighting and shading in computer graphics. Author unknown but was once thought as of Carmack.

Given the number of companies exit at 100m vs exit 1-99m is huge. They're taking a bet at the earliest possible time and are only making money in the case of extreme success.

What's the color scheme you're using for terminal? I'm also rocking agnoster.
wasd··on A New Instapaper Parser
Agreed. It would be nice if they had an API for Instaparser. First thing I did was CTRL+F api and check their API docs for any updates. I tried using Readability on all of PG's essays and I was surprised by how poor the results were.
wasd··on YC Updates and Additions
I think you're right but isn't the second part of your statement ("ever mentioned competition with other tech companies as a recruiting concern") what the following lawsuit was about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Tech_Employee_Antitrust_L... ?

Speaking generally, I don't think startups think about it very much but it seems that the "very top" companies do/did.

Feel free to let me know if I'm wrong. I only have a general understanding of what you mean and the lawsuit.

wasd··on Visual Studio Code is now open source
I would be pretty very interested in Ruby support. One reason I think it would be especially valuable for Ruby is that a lot of introductory programming happens in Ruby and currently the defacto suggestion is sublime. As great as sublime is, installing packages can be challenging. Having debugger, linting, and auto complete support out of the box would be huge.

I'm curious to hear how you're supporting these features. I personally don't know much about VC.

wasd··on GitHub Internships
This may seem uninteresting but GitHub didn't previously have an intern program (officially at least).
wasd··on Meteor Galaxy, a cloud platform for Meteor applications
Based on the press release, I was expecting a Heroku like full stack service. Was surprised to learn you need to setup the DB from FAQ.

> Does Galaxy include a database?

> Galaxy does not provide the database layer. You can run your own MongoDB server inside AWS, or create a database through any number of MongoDB hosting providers.

wasd··on Holberton School – a project-based alternative to college for software engineers
Just a heads up to any holberton school developers, the site is throwing 502s on every page.
wasd··on Launching NginScript
I'm not sure if this is great idea. Use of reverse proxies has lots of benefits. You can manage load balancing, SSL Termination, serving static content (much faster), caching, compression, centralized logging, and using different applications on the same ur space (foo.com/app1, foo.com/app2). They also have the added benefit of another layer of security (look for and prevent various HTTP exploits and prevent them from getting to the web server). I'm not saying you can't do this in node but nginx/apache are really good at what they do.

EDIT:

I've read through your comments and you seem like a pretty experienced developer. I don't think any of the information in my comment should be news to you so I'm curious to hear more about why you feel this way.

wasd··on React Native for Android
Dumb question but suppose I need a mobile app. Then what question do I ask myself after :)?
wasd··on React Native for Android
I think you're right. I'll just do this.
wasd··on React Native for Android
Slightly off topic but I'm curious about using React Native vs WebView with native wrapper and components.

I'm a developer who primarily codes in Ruby. I'm working on a side project that will be mostly CRUD and have no DOM updates. The application will need to support web, mobile, and tablet. I'm considering using React so I can use React Native but I'm afraid I'm adding a level of unnecessary complexity.

Originally, I was planning to use web views and wrapping them in native components (navigation, specific ui elements) like Basecamp does (described here: https://signalvnoise.com/posts/3743-hybrid-sweet-spot-native...).

I'm proficient with Java and Javascript. My experience with js frameworks is mostly with jQuery and Angular but I've created toy apps in React.

Time is a limiting factor since this is a side project. My goal is to turn this side project into a business, not learn new technical skills. Ruby and Rails is very comfortable for me.

What do you think? Should I learn RN or just stick with Rails?

wasd··on My favorite way to TDD
That's good to know. Thanks for the information.

(c) The person who posted this does a lot of blogging / public speaking about software. He tweeted that he published this. He posted 2 of the links you posted. See: https://twitter.com/@searls

wasd··on My favorite way to TDD
Weird. I didn't manipulate the URL so I figured if it had been posted before, HN would have just upvoted that post (like it usually does with dupes).

My mistake. I should have searched first.

wasd··on React 0.14 Release Candidate
Thanks for responding. I'm happily using React in my personal life but we don't use it at work (for no reason than we don't need SPA). One last question, is there an official policy as to how long will you support a release?
wasd··on React 0.14 Release Candidate
Great work from the React team. I know the answer to my question is "when it's ready" but any thoughts as to when React might go 1.0.0? I've played around with it and like React a lot but I don't want to deploy until it's "version" stable. Happy to hear time (2016 summer) or version (after 0.20.0) estimates.
wasd··on What ‘Game of Thrones’ Does to Your Heart Rate
Would you consider adding a fitbit integration as well? I think many more people own a fitbit charge hr (which has a heart rate monitor).
wasd··on GraphQL Working Draft
I believe the event ended so they marked the stream as private.
wasd··on Google has quietly launched a GitHub competitor
Sure, it'll compete with GitHub but I think a more exciting possibility is that it'll compete with Heroku. CodeCommit (similar service offered by AWS) integrates with other AWS services to help manage deployment and releases but I still find the entire AWS platform to be very difficult to use. I would love to see Google add pressure to all three companies to make their respective products better.
wasd··on Harj Taggar Is Building a New Technical Hiring Pipeline with TripleByte
> As for their revenue model, TripleByte takes a 25 percent cut of an engineer’s first-year salary, which is a fairly typical model for recruiting agencies.

Hey Harj,

Do you think that by charging a flat % of the first year salary that TripleByte might be adding downward pressure on the potential salary for an engineer?

wasd··on Well, We Failed – Wattage is shutting down
It's really easy to say this is why someone failed and this is what they should have done instead but take a moment to walk in their shoes. Do you really think it never occurred to them? Every decision has incredible amount of weight to it and only they had to the bear the consequences of the those decisions.
wasd··on How ZenPayroll processes billions of dollars in annual payroll
JRuby is also an amazing piece of technology. There are plenty of instances where you can change the engine and get all the performance enhancements of the JVM whilst the flexibility of Ruby.

Note: I have no idea if ZenPayroll uses or has considered JRuby. This comment is specifically about improving the performance of Ruby.

That's really helpful. Do you have any suggestions on how to learn more about the latter?
