was_a_dev··on How to compute a 256 bit elliptic curve key with 50M Toffoli gates
In the realm of quantum computing, it always has
was_a_dev··on Cement's future could be a combination of carbon capture and electrification
I know we have wet and cold climate in the UK, but it is also pretty mild.

We could have timber framed housing, as we don't get hit by natural disasters with the exception of flooding

was_a_dev··on Recovering secret keys from devices using video footage of their power LED
At that point a cheap photodiode would be more sensitive and have higher temporal resolution
was_a_dev··on Why you’ll never fly in an airplane with those double-decker seats
I agree, but I also think it translates to a psychological discomfort for the passenger behind.
was_a_dev··on Why you’ll never fly in an airplane with those double-decker seats
The adjustment is still enough to cause conflict - evidenced by it being discussed here.

The design of an enclosed space should be to minimise conflict. The fact that people will be entitled over either "right to recline" or "personal space" is just a point for unecessary conflict.

Keep it simple, keep it same for all.

was_a_dev··on Why you’ll never fly in an airplane with those double-decker seats
Seats on airplanes should not be abled to recline. The impact for the passenger behind you is always negative.
was_a_dev··on Royal Navy says quantum navigation test a success
> But seriously, this article is light on details

I'd expect it to be light on details. It is a project funded by the Royal Navy for next-generation navigation. Thye don't really want to give away details other than, "we have this"

A recent TV news report covered this in the UK. The only thing they could show was an prototype in a lab setting and a sealed white box on the test platform boat.

was_a_dev··on The planning of U.S. physician shortages (2020)
While this is a problem. The single largest issue that isn't properly being disscussed (especially during the strikes) is retention.

The NHS is a leaking bucket of highly skilled doctors and nurses.

Anecdotally, my wife is a doctor at a large tertiary hospital. Asking all the completing Foundation junior doctors what their career plans are, 80% of them have obtained either an Australian or New Zealand Visa and were securing jobs abroad.

No one skilled and smart enough wants to stay in the UK.

was_a_dev··on Brazil develops tropical wheat and predicts self-sufficiency in 5 years
That makes sense. People in the UK want their energy prices to fall, at pretty much any cost at the moment
was_a_dev··on When the Neighbors Don’t Like Your 10-Foot-Tall Transformer Statues
The attraction of owning a home is your landlord is the bank, who has set a long term profit goal on you loan.

Not some landlord trying to extract futher value from your home.

Since purchasing my home, my stress has evaporated. The freedom and lack of harrassment is priceless.

Do I care about the future price of my home - no, because I don't intend to move in the mid-term, and my mortgage is just rent. I bought my home to live in, not to speculate with

was_a_dev··on Brazil develops tropical wheat and predicts self-sufficiency in 5 years
To be fair, it wasn't even their natural resources
was_a_dev··on Brazil develops tropical wheat and predicts self-sufficiency in 5 years
Are renewables economically viable? I don't expect any nation that isn't "rich enough" to go green, but the trends of it becoming cheaper means it will become the cheapest means.

Are we there yet? My assumption was the political climate of Brazil was primarily pushing oil dependence

was_a_dev··on Brazil develops tropical wheat and predicts self-sufficiency in 5 years
The user isn't even American. Nor is it clear that they are "liberal"
was_a_dev··on I moved from the US to Sweden after struggling with burnout
The issue here is point #2. We Brits already have a cultural apathy for learning other languages. And as you have said theres enough proficiency in English in Sweeden, that combines to make it easy for English speakers to take the easy option.

I don't understand how you can truly live in a country without speaking the language.

was_a_dev··on I moved from the US to Sweden after struggling with burnout
You are correct it is a difference rather than an advantage.

Moving to France works well because the French are passionate about their language. Therefore you must learn French to thrive. This can be harder in other European countries where English is spoken so proficiently that learning the native language is difficult to do - and therefore avoided

was_a_dev··on I moved from the US to Sweden after struggling with burnout
I think a lot of people don't realise the large cultural differences between the US and Europe.

Most Brits (myself included) fall into this due to the lack of language barrier.

In my opinion, British culture aligns better to Europe than the US (for obvious geographical reasons)

was_a_dev··on Our model suggests that global deaths remain 5% above pre-Covid forecasts
I agree. I was thinking today how during covid, my country was short of PPE for doctors and nurses. As were many countries

One policy failing in this instance, was our reduction of stockpiled PPE several years earlier.

Since COVID, there has been no discusion or suggestion of how to prepare better for next time

was_a_dev··on France bans short-haul flights to cut carbon emissions
Except there wouldn't be any flights
was_a_dev··on Black holes might be defects in spacetime
Most of the New Scientist is breathless articles. It's borderline science-fiction hooking in the very latest of publications
was_a_dev··on One million cancel broadband as living costs rise
Good to know. Thank you for answering my question
was_a_dev··on One million cancel broadband as living costs rise
That's an industry standard as well
was_a_dev··on One million cancel broadband as living costs rise
Would you be making that much outside of CA?
was_a_dev··on ‘In London there is no space at all’: the rise of self-storage as rents soar
The sooner we divest away from London the better.

Let Northern investment be more than polticial virtue signalling

was_a_dev··on Farmland practices are driving bird population decline across Europe
Nice singular data point
was_a_dev··on UK universities slide down global rankings
I think it would be safe to call London an outlier for the UK, for the reason of how much investment is directed there
was_a_dev··on UK universities slide down global rankings
Part of this seems inevitable, with the West providing world-class education to Chinese students for decades, which can them be imported back into China

Add in the funding China provides to universities, and you would be disheartened if Chinese universities didn't improve

was_a_dev··on UK universities slide down global rankings
From a UK perspective, the US "throws money" at everything, both culturally and because you are a larger economy.

Education, sports, healthcare, industry, space, science to name a few.

The UK also has an opposing culture, we don't invest in the long term in infrastructure or people. Even in your case, you visited the two richest universities (by a long margin) in the UK.

was_a_dev··on A weed is swallowing the Sonoran Desert
The real issue isn't the smell but it out-competing native species
was_a_dev··on Ask HN: Why are students taking handwritten notes? Typing is much more efficient
During my physics undergraduate, it was for two primary reasons

1) Writing is more efficient when taking notes in real-time for maths notation

2) Better rentention of knowledge from the act of writing vs typing

Now as I teach, more students use tablets to take notes. But they're still writing, not typing

was_a_dev··on Can GPT pass my programming courses?
I think this is the "healthiest" way. Students learning how to use LLMs means they will also learn about the limitations and pitfalls that comes with it
