wartijn_··on Ask HN: Great books you read in 2018?

wartijn_··on Analyzing Hacker News book suggestions in Python
Nice overview. However, if I search in the tread, I can find "Thinking in Systems: A Primer" only twice. There are a few other books with "systems in the title, maybe some of those are counted as well?
wartijn_··on Ask HN: How do we stop the cookie dialogs?
Petition your EU lawmakers and make your browser reject cookies from all sites that are not on your whitelist.

I used to do that and it worked pretty well, but now it's impossible thanks to those dialogs. Blocking third party cookies still works, since it only breaks a small portion of the websites I visit.

Blocking cookies won't really stop the surveillance by the way. It stops only one way of tracking you.

Because they don't want your blood if you have a higher risk of diseases. You have to fill in a questionnaire with all kind of questions relating to your health, travels to other countries, your sex life, dug use and a few other things. The idea is that you might not be completely honest if you get paid for your blood.

Have you done some coke last month? Just tell and nothing will happen, except you won't be donating any blood for the next 11 months. Have you done some coke last month, but also really need money to feed your kids? It might be really tempting to lie and get that blood bank money anyway.

wartijn_··on Ask HN: How do you manage UI/UX for your side projects?
Not OP, but I recommend using plain css. With the grid layout and flexbox it has become pretty easy to create something decent and learning flexbox and grid isn't hard. Grid works basically the same as Bootstrap: split a page in parts and tell each element how many parts they can use. But with gird you don't to split your page in 12 part, but can choose for yourself how many you want. Flexbox is rid, but for things you want to arrange 1d instead of 2d.

However, if you know how to work with Bootstrap, I don't see a reason to learn something else for side projects, if you want to minimize the effort you put into front end stuff. It might not be ideal, but it's good enough imo.

Sorry, what?

edit: to answer my own question: there are some rumors about candy manufacturers influencing legislators to implement dst after Halloween so more children would partake and they would make more money. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with Texas in particular and might not be true at all. But please correct me if I'm wrong.

It should be noted that he left the project in 2014.
wartijn_··on Coders Automating Their Own Job
Works just as well the other way around. Every time managers are mentioned at HN, some programmer is sure they can do a better job than their/most/all managers.
wartijn_··on My Story as a Homeless Developer
He did, but the grandparent post suggested OP tries to find another job first, use that money to get a place to live and a phone. Once he has that, he can find a programming job.

Sounds pretty smart to me, but I don't know anything about being homeless or getting a job in the USA.
