wartijn_··on “Zero fucks given” in other languages
Correction: m'n reet. Although many people will use "me" here, that is definitely incorrect.

And although I too only know the expression with the word "aan" in it, the translation by jauco at the start of this thread seems to suggest they also use it without that word.

wartijn_··on Django 4.0
Django releases time based and a version 3.3. was part of the plan. 4.0 is released right now because it is December 2021. The versions after that will be 4.1, 4.2, 5.0, 5.1 etc. [0] It's different from how many other projects work but not unique, Ubuntu works in a similar way for example.

And although it might be different form what you're used to, I really like it. If you check their documentation, you can see exactly when they'll make breaking changes and features will be deprecated and removed.

wartijn_··on Show HN: Emoji to Scale
The emoji isn't called "arm" though, it's "flexed biceps". Alternative names are: biceps | comic | flex | flexed biceps | muscle. [0]

And every popular implementation shows arm + forearm + fist. [1] Giving only one part of that as the length is just wrong.

Even if it were called arm, I would argue that that should be shoulder to wrist, since that's what commonly called an arm. It's also the definition that Merriam Webster has. [2]

Funny idea, but lot of these seem off.

- A chicken egg is taller than 5cm.

- I would say a tulip is bigger than a phone.

- The okay hand sign says it's 21 cm.My hands are larger than average, but definitely smaller than 21cm.

- A duck isn't bigger than a goat.

- An elephant is smaller than a house.

wartijn_··on After months of delay, the House passes infrastructure bill
No it's not. Car manufacturers and regulators have been trying to make cars safer for decades and won't just (require to) add some feature that is as unsafe as your proposed "solution" And the solution here is simple: do the check when the car is starting and don't drive when alcohol is detected. That's how current alcohol locks work. Nobody is suggesting to test when the car is already driving and nobody is suggesting to slow cars down.
wartijn_··on After months of delay, the House passes infrastructure bill
About your last paragraph: the goal of these measurements would of course be to prefect you from driving at all when alcohol is detected. Suggesting that the idea is that people are slowed down on a freeway because of this seems absurd.

They've mentioned it without saying directly that that's what they've done.

wartijn_··on How to build a low-tech website? (2018)
I'm pretty sure the parent poster is talking about the page that says you shouldn't use Webp, not about low-tech machazine. The former claims to load in 0.5 seconds, the latter doesn't.
wartijn_··on Every search bar looks like a URL bar to users
The settings screen has the option "show search in address bar results". You can turn that off.
wartijn_··on After a decade as Apple’s assistant, Siri still hasn’t figured out the job
No, I would use: four (vier uur, so literally translated four hour), four past four, quarter past four, half five, quarter to five.
wartijn_··on After a decade as Apple’s assistant, Siri still hasn’t figured out the job
In some countries that use 24 hour time notation it's really uncommon to use that in spoken language[0]. When I say four past four in Dutch, it could be 04:04 or 16:04. So even if you've set the clock to 24 hours, that doesn't mean you would actually say sixteen when referring to 16:xx.

You can set the region in the settings, maybe that influences the way Siri interprets time? (I would be surprised if it does, but you never know)

wartijn_··on JavaScript Is Weird
The site does say so in the introduction

> Even if you're a JS developer, most of this syntax is probably, and hopefully, not something you use in your daily life.

So I think you should look at this site more as something fun you might not have known if you're an js developer than as criticism of js.

That being said, the !!"" isn't that weird of a syntax is it? I see and use the double exclamation mark all the time.

In one of the reviews[0] The permission modal says this though:

- pair with Bluetooth devices

- full network access

- run at startup

- prevent device from sleeping

Well of course, but we all know Facebook isn't a responsible company and Apple shouldn't assume that every app in its store is made by a responsible company.
wartijn_··on Voyager 1 hears the hush of interstellar plasma
Not according to this stack exchange answer[0]. It quotes a page from John Hopkins University, although that source page doesn't seem to exist anymore.

> Though New Horizons will also reach 100 AU, it will never pass Voyager 1, because Voyager was boosted by multiple gravity assists that make its speed faster than New Horizons will travel. Voyager 1 is escaping the solar system at 17 kilometers per second. When New Horizons reaches that same distance 32 years from now, propelled by a single planetary swingby, it will be moving about 13 kilometers per second

Does The Guardian have a paywall in some countries? All I ever see is a pop-up and some banners asking to donate. Sometimes those banners and pop-ups explain why they don't have a paywall.
wartijn_··on Paint.wtf
Yeah it's a shame, I get that someone tries to beat the ai, but you would think that it's less fun to draw the eleventh solid color when the top ten is already filled with them.

On a more positive note: There are some awesome Giraffe in the arctic drawings as well. Like this masterpiece https://paint.wtf/ranking/IdF9/vBRMWbTGG9Td6oeMoim8

This is really fun to do, I'm currently ranked 36th for the racoon drawing and 15th for the giraffe (So top 5 if you ignore the solid colors), but I should probably do some work right now.

wartijn_··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea
Aren't you falling for the survivorship bias trap? Sure, people have said that about Airbnb. But I think there are loads of that startups that failed because they didn't understand the industry they were in, or because of legal hurdles.

wartijn_··on Apple's MacBook revival plan: Bring back old features
We're not paying per port, but adding more ports surely adds to the BOM, which influences to total price.

And I agree that adding one port doesn't make the device noticeably heavier. But I thought we were talking about adding multiple I/O ports, since that's what the article says and other comment are talking about adding multiple USB A and C ports, MagSave, an SD slot and even an hdmi port. Adding all those ports will increase the size of the MacBooks.

I'm not saying it's wrong to want to have more ports (I wouldn't buy a notebook with one port). I'm saying that it's strange to call people egotistical for wanting fewer ports while failing to see that adding ports has consequences other people might care about.

wartijn_··on Apple's MacBook revival plan: Bring back old features
I think that's a weird realization. Those other people don't use those port so they want everyone to have a MacBook without them. You want those port so you want everyone to have a MacBook without them.

Or wanting either of those tings is selfish, and you should've realized that what you want is selfish, or both aren't.

wartijn_··on How to cook a medieval feast: recipes from the Middle Ages
A few years ago the podcast Planet Money prepared a peacock according to a recipe published in 1612. This recipe was meant for really rich Dutch people, and apparently being really rich meant showing of how many spices you could afford on your food. Pretty interesting and funny read/listen.
