wartijn_··on C meeting is over. C23 added:
This is off topic, but I don't think the problem is just that the Twitter is terrible.

If you want to link to a thread, you should click on the first tweet of that thread and copy its url. It's easy to see the rest of the thread: just scroll down.

If you want to link to one tweet in a thread you should click on that tweet and copy its url.

The person who posted the link to HN did the latter, while they should have done the former.

Twitter could make it easier to see that a tweet is part of a thread though.

wartijn_··on I Don't Like Smartphones (2016)
If you got that form that comment, I don't understand your first comment. It's clear to you that smartphones are being used to create content, but you still think they aren't content creation devices, because they lack precision?

If content creation devices aren't the devices that create content, then what are they?

wartijn_··on I Don't Like Smartphones (2016)
Smartphones count as creation machines because people create content on them. If you take a look at Tiktok, Instagram or many of the other social networks, you'll see countless pieces of content that are created by smartphones each day.
wartijn_··on How to skate a 10k
He has said in interviews after winning his two gold medal that he's going to try to stop, but since he tried that two times before, there's a 20% chance he'll be back.

He also said he doesn't know what he's going to do the next few years, but that there are a few ultra runs he still wants to do.

Here is a source. It's in Dutch though and doesn't mention the 20% https://www.nu.nl/olympische-spelen/6183560/van-der-poel-kie...

wartijn_··on Nerdle = Like Wordle but with Equations
You should give hard mode a try. That makes it a lot less repetitive and more fun.
wartijn_··on Stop Using Pie-Charts
I think the "Let’s See if it actually rains more on the weekend." is not really want the author actually wants to test. The text in the image above says "What do you call the day after two days of rain? Monday". This suggests that Saturday and Sunday are the rainiest and second rainiest days of the week.

So what the author wants to see is if both Saturday and Sunday are rainier than any other week. So the problem isn't that you can't differentiate between those two days, but that you can't between either of those days individually and Monday.

wartijn_··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
I would say maybe about as common as in The Netherlands. So it's definitely not at a Bali level, but you can there are still plenty of them.

I didn't buy or long-term-rent one myself, but used https://whizascoot.mt/ and https://gotoglobal.com/en/goto-malta/ and I would buy one over a car. Traffic and parking can be bad, and scooters really help out there. And the fastest you can go on any road is 80km/h, so you can get everywhere by scooter. (the ride sharing ones are limited to 50km/h, so roads with a higher maximum speed are not ideal)

wartijn_··on Twitter doesn't care about spam?
There can be many reason. One of them is that you click on a direct link to a tweet, because the replies will often be on the same screen as the main tweet.
wartijn_··on Twitter doesn't care about spam?
It's not just a few spam like tweets at the bottom of threads though. If you look at tweets by Elon Musk for example there will be loads, as replies at the top of the threads.

Pretty weird how multiple people refuse to believe something can be a problem even though they can't see it.

wartijn_··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
As a Dutchman who used to live in Malta for a few years, I have to warn you: Maltese public transport really bad in comparison. If your bus might be 10 minutes early or 20 minutes late and it won't show in the public transport app. If you want to get somewhere on time that's not within walking distance, you'll need a car (there are ride sharing cars and scooters). Bus tickets are cheap though.

And yeah, the climate is much much better. I really mis being able to see the sun.

wartijn_··on Moving Google Contacts and Calendar to NextCloud
Installing an app is no problem, and I was using a calendar app that worked okay. But I was unable to find an email app that I liked and all the password manager apps worked (or work) by (ab)using an accessibility feature that had a pretty severe impact on the performance of my phone.

And uninstalling an app is impossible on stock Android, if that app is made by Google. To achieve that I had to unlock the boot loader of my phone, for which there was no official method.

Meanwhile on iOS I can use the default mail and calendar apps that work fine and my password manager integrates perfectly with the os, while I don't need to use iCloud at all if I don't want to.

Those 3 apps weren't the only reason to switch from os, but they did make the choice for, and switching to, iOS a lot easier.

wartijn_··on Moving Google Contacts and Calendar to NextCloud
> Generally, supporting open interoperable standards that make switching providers easy is bad for business

It was one of the reasons I switched from Android to an iPhone. It's really annoying to use Android if you don't want to use Gmail and Google Calendar, while on iOS it's super easy to use a third party for email, calendar and password manager.

But that's of course just an anecdote, I'm sure you're right and it in general bad for business.

wartijn_··on A pair of dice which never roll 7 (2004)
O that's really interesting. I've been thinking about making something like that myself, didn't know there was an official extention.

I think it should improve the game when you remove a bit of luck with this.

wartijn_··on A pair of dice which never roll 7 (2004)
But it's not just for the sake of not rolling 7, it's about avoiding only that number to improve Catan. If you can't roll any odd number in the first few rounds, tiles with those number become way less valuable, which changes where you want to place your villages, which affects the entire game.
wartijn_··on Tell HN: A Conversation Needs to Be Had over Subscription Software
I wonder what charging in Euro does on the psychological price front. Does €79 look less than $85?
wartijn_··on Tell HN: A Conversation Needs to Be Had over Subscription Software
I'm not OP, but I use https://translationhut.com to manage my translations and it works really well. It can also automatically translate the assets for you, although I don't use that myself.

(Full disclosure: I know the guy that makes that service, but am not involved with that project)

wartijn_··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
I've heard a that 1Password looks Apple-focused before (Sometimes as a negative, sometimes as a positive), but I mainly use the Firefox plugin (in Linux) and it works great.
wartijn_··on Poll: Which password manager for personal use?
Looks like I can't vote on my own poll.

I used to use Lastpass. Thought it was pretty mediocre. It usually worked fine, but sometimes would generate a password but not save it. If I had two accounts on a website and the user name and password fields were on 2 screens, it would fill the password field with one of the passwords, usually not the right one. It was also a hassle to tell it that two sites were the same (e.g. amazon.com and amazon.co.uk) So when they started asking money for usage on multiple devices I started looking for other managers.

First I tried Bitwarden. But in the few days that I tried it, it didn't save some passwords and it had some other (UX) issues that made it not great to use.

Then I switched to 1Password. It's the most expensive of the three managers and isn't open source like Bitwarden, but it doesn't have any of the issues I mentioned and in general works really well. So I'm happy with it.

Kudos for Lastpass for their export function though. It was really easy to export and import all the items I had stored.

wartijn_··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
I created a poll for this. It's about personal use instead of use in companies though. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29994703
wartijn_··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
> No idea why people still throw money at proprietary password managers.

I've tried Bitwarden for a few days with their Firefox plug-in. During those few days there were multiple occasions were it would create a password for me, but wouldn't save the login.

I switched to 1password and it is way better in letting you know if it saved a password or not. I also ran in to some other small issues with the Bitwarden ux that made it less than ideal to use.

I want to like Bitwarden, but 1password just seems to be better at managing passwords.

wartijn_··on Average HN User
If someone wants the link without seeing the comments on this post. You can use this link, since the last time "Average HN User" was mentioned was 5 days ago.

wartijn_··on Average HN User
With this list you miss all the context. Apart the fact that it obviously summarizes entire comments, it feels like it doesn't represent what was said. From the 4 quotes I checked:

> is more likely to use Firefox and have 2+ google accounts

..."than the average person". Doesn't really change the quote, but it's good to know to who the average HN user is compared.

> is trained in the diplomacy of Sid Meyer's Civilization

The complete quote is: "Your average HN user is trained in the diplomacy of Sid Meyer's Civilization. Realpolitik is a joke. /s". The "/s" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here

> has ultra-secure OPSEC

This is the entire sentence (not the entire comment). "I'm not trying to say that what happened with Bumble isn't bad, and it makes the company look somewhat foolish, but in 2021, finding the location of somebody in most developed countries, aside from your ultra secure OPSEC average HN user, is quite a simple task."

I don't think that was really a meant as a sincere description of the average HN user.

wartijn_··on Tesla's Next-Generation Model Y Chassis
Other commenters have pointed it out in different threads, but these castings won't replace the panels. They will replace the current chassis.
wartijn_··on 5% of 666 Python repos had comma typo bugs (inc V8, TensorFlow and PyTorch)
I like this. It's clearly meant as marketing for their product, but imo the best kind of marketing. They don't just run their tool and automatically make tickets, but check for false positive and (offer to) make pr's.

It's both good for those projects and for the company that does the marketing since they reach there exact target group. Plus it gets them on the front page of HN.

wartijn_··on 5% of 666 Python repos had comma typo bugs (inc V8, TensorFlow and PyTorch)
But Python 3 was designed in the 2000s and had many breaking changes. Seems like they could have changed this behavior with that version.
wartijn_··on Keyboard lets people type so fast it’s banned from typing competitions
That's the point the other commenters make. If that's what's happening, why does the 500wpm 100% accuracy?
wartijn_··on Predict 3D position of flying bugs and pest to shoot down them with a laser
Yeah, I've got one and it's great. But not having to get out of bed would be even better.
wartijn_··on Predict 3D position of flying bugs and pest to shoot down them with a laser
I'll definitely try that, Thanks :)

Moving from southern Europe to northern-ish Europe also worked pretty well for me. It's cold, dark and rainy here, but at least the mosquitos are only a problem a few months per year.

wartijn_··on Predict 3D position of flying bugs and pest to shoot down them with a laser
It doesn't have to be used to kill all insects, just the few mosquitos that are in my bedroom when I try to sleep. I'll remove any dead mosquitos the next morning and probably won't really alter the ecosystem, while it can make sure I have a good night's sleep.

Edit: after re-reading the article I see the main subject is killing moths to improve agriculture, not mosquitos in my bedroom
