wartijn_··on Apple overtakes Android to pass 50% share of smartphones used in US
I do have an Apple account myself, but apparently you don't need one[0]

And I checked on my old Android phone, an Nokia 6.1, which is supposed to have stock Android, and I can't delete these apps: calendar, drive, lens, gmail, chrome, files, photos.

wartijn_··on Apple overtakes Android to pass 50% share of smartphones used in US
1) Not being locked in into the Google ecosystem and being tracked by that company. You need to be logged in into your Google account for the play store, which means you're looped in to Gmail and Google calendar.

In iOS I can choose to use different providers for email, calendar, and password management or remove the apps (for the first two).

2) Long support which makes the price really reasonable. I've been using an iPhone 8 for a couple of years now, and still have the latest iOS version and the phone works good enough. If I would have bought an Android phone when I bought my iPhone I would have needed to replace it already, because of lack of updates.

wartijn_··on I Love My PinePhone
That's an unrealistic expectation of this phone. If you want thinks to just work you shouldn't buy a PinePhone and they make that really clear on their website.

The sale page of the PinePhone says this in red letters[0]: "Beta Limited Edition PinePhones are aimed solely at early adopters. More specifically, only intend for these units to find their way into the hands of users with extensive Linux experience."

And their wiki has this to say[1]:

"Bear in mind that the software for these smartphones is very early, with most of the software being in alpha or beta state. That's especially also the case for scalability of applications, their availability and practicability, any hardware function implementations and the firmware. The software is provided as is. There is no warranty for the software, not even for merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose."

wartijn_··on Should notes be end-to-end encrypted?
An ad maybe, it's clearly written by a company that has a note keeping app and they mention their app a few times.

But I don't see how this is clickbait. The title asks if your notes should be encrypted, and the article does a pretty good job at explaining different kinds of encryption, what the company uses and why, seems like the opposite of clickbait to me.

wartijn_··on Ask HN: What are the least frustrating languages/technologies to work with?
That's a weird way of thinking. Just because you can do the same things in two languages, doesn't mean they're as nice to work with. Everything you do in any compiled language, you can do in assembly. But I don't think many people would argue that building everything in assembly is the least frustrating way of writing code.

In the case of js and ts: they can do the same, but ts is less frustrating because the added types catches bugs when writing code, it gives useful info about what a variable is meant to do, and my IDE gives way more useful hints.

wartijn_··on Ask HN: What are the least frustrating languages/technologies to work with?
What makes you prefer Javascript over Typescript? For me TS removes some of the frustrations of JS.

wartijn_··on Emoji Kitchen
> To use it: You need an Android phone (sorry Tim Cook!!) 1. Download and install Gboard 2. Open it and set it as the default keyboard on your phone 3. In Gboard's settings check to make sure that Emoji, Stickers & GIFs > Suggestions while typing > Emoji is enabled. This is what ensures that the feature is on :-) 4. Tap two emoji in your keyboard and it suggests a combination of those two emoji

wartijn_··on Atlassian is 20 years old and unprofitable
I also prefer to write my stuff offline and than paste it to a web interface. That works great, until you write markdown and paste in into Confluence. Instead of just accepting markdown and formatting it in the same way it does when you type markdown, Confluence puts it between code tags..

Jira does this better, but is still weird with their text formatting. There are two different kinds of input fields, one of them accepts markdown, the other one some other kind of markup language. Copying some formatted text from one of the inputs to the other doesn't work because of this.

wartijn_··on Most of the world’s grain is not eaten by humans
That seems like a strange conclusion to draw from this article. It even says "But in fact, more than enough grain is already grown to meet humanity’s needs." Seems more like the number of people isn't the biggest problem, but the lifestyle of a part of those people is. To me it look like the problem will be solved if North America and Europe drastically reduce their meat consumption.
wartijn_··on PostmarketOS 22.06 released – now upgrades are possible
Looks like it's the international (non-US) version. From the wiki page[0] of the device:

> So far, what works for Samsung Galaxy S III LTE (samsung-m3) also works for the samsung-m0 (Galaxy S III international GSM version without LTE, Also known as Galaxy S III 3G SHW-M440S in South Korea) and samsung-shv-e210s (a Korean variant). (None of these S III models should be confused with the North American S III models, which require OS builds.)

wartijn_··on PostmarketOS 22.06 released – now upgrades are possible
On the devices page of the wiki, the PinePhone pro is in the "testing" list, which has this description: "All other device ports, including new ones. Maintainers can create merge requests to move devices to community if requirements are met on the Device categorization page. A more detailed view with a full status matrix of these devices can be found on the All devices page"

The normal PinePhone is one of the main devices, so it seems that that one has way better support.

wartijn_··on Find a good available .com domain
By offering them a low amount. They'll counter with a ridiculously high amount. Make clear that there's no way you'll ever pay anything close to that amount and stop with negotiating if they don't come up with a reasonable price.

They might come back to you in a few months with a better offer. Or they might not, but it has worked for me two times.

wartijn_··on The unreasonable effectiveness of f-strings and re.verbose
According to this site[0] it's about the name of the movies, not a about the subtitles of all the dialog in the movies.

For example the title is "Star Wars", the subtitle is "The Empire Strikes Back"

wartijn_··on Show HN: I made a website to search for half loaves of bread
I was expecting a US-only site, since I wouldn't expect something like this to be available globally available and usually no mention of the location means it's targeted towards the US.

Kinda refreshing to see an India-only service on the front page of HN.

wartijn_··on Show HN: I made a website to search for half loaves of bread
This is what the about page of the site says:

> This website is of course a non-useful, silly little thing. But I hope that it can get people to start thinking about why more stores don't sell half loaves when it seems like a more practical thing to do.

wartijn_··on Today Google is turning on tracking for many users that previously turned it off
Unfortunately it's still way worse than Google maps in the few European countries that I've tried it. The routing is worse. Searching for a type of shop (e.g. "supermarket") doesn't work well and it doesn't have accurate opening hours of shops. And in The Netherlands it doesn't support cycling, which makes it pretty much useless for the many people who use that as their mode of transport.

I install Apple Maps every once in a while to see if it has become useful, but always remove the app after a few days because it hasn't.

wartijn_··on Ask HN: Quit caffeine? Before and after anecdotes
Two years ago I quit drinking caffeine for 2 or 3 months. At first I was tiered more often, but after a while (maybe 2 weeks? Can't remember exactly) that went away. After that I felt pretty much the same as with caffeine, not noticeably better or worse.

Since I didn't feel better and I like coffee, I started drinking that again.
