wartijn_··on The quest for a simple smartwatch
Is it one of the only statement pieces a guy can were though? I know plenty of guys with bracelets, chains, rings, earrings and/or tattoos. You can express statements with your clothing too, if you want.

And than there are people who don't care about statement pieces and just want to wear whatever is most practical. And people who want to express themselves by wearing a smartwatch.

My experience with Garmin with regards to sleep tracking is unfortunately not much better. It does measure the time I'm in bed, but if it takes me a while to fall asleep, or keep laying in bed after waking up, it will count that as sleep. I've even had a few times where it didn't notice that I woke up at night, went to the bathroom and then back bed. It would just count that as sleeping.

Since it can't even see the difference between being awake and sleeping, I absolutely don't trust anything it says about the amount of time I spend in each sleep phase.

wartijn_··on Even more hindsight on Vim, Helix and Kakoune
The author did mention emacs in the previous article where he talked about editors.

> The reason I didn’t stick around Emacs was basically because of its runtime choice, and ultimately, its Lisp ecosystem. The Emacs community is one of the best I have been talking to, and they have really, really talented people working on insanely complex topics, like turning Elisp code into native code (via C), including Emacs itself. But even with all those optimizations, the editor was still feeling too slow, and has a lot of background that you can feel. All the abstraction layers, all the Lisp macros (oh no), etc.

Their manuals start with a list of parts, including the part number. You can see that number in the build steps too. If there are two parts that look alike, you can put them in two separate piles next to each other, so you know you should check if you've got the right one when you need a part of one of these piles.

I usually sort all the different small parts at the beginning of building something. It's nice to know that all the parts are there and you don't need to search for them.

wartijn_··on Show HN: Non.io, a Reddit-like platform Ive been working on for the last 4 years
You could keep updating the weight you give to each upvote. That would mean upvotes you make at the start of each month are valued too highly before getting valued less, but as long as the creation date of all the accounts are distributed evenly across the month that should even out.

Alternatively you could base it on the number of upvotes a user gave last month, before correcting it at the end of the month, although that system might be easy to game.

wartijn_··on The death of self-driving cars is greatly exaggerated
That’s not data about autonomous vehicles. Tesla’s fsd is a feature where the car drives itself during some parts of a trip. The driver is always supposed to keep paying attention and sometimes take over control.

To show that autonomous cars are better drivers than humans you need data from autonomous cars in the same situation as human drivers. And that data doesn’t exist (yet), because truly autonomous cars don’t drive in all places and situations where humans do.

wartijn_··on Waymo and Uber partner to bring autonomous driving technology to Uber
Yes, Google can copy Uber, but can they make it successful? Uber has a lot of users and drivers, and Google has to convince them to use their app instead of Uber or one of the other existing apps in this space.

Getting into a new market didn’t work for videos so they bought YouTube, it didn’t work for their social network, and it didn’t work for a ton of other cancelled projects.

wartijn_··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
Does make sense to me. I don’t want to combine recipes rely on my creative cooking skills, because I don’t have those skills.

If I want to make a certain dish I look for recipes, pick one and follow that. If a recipe takes 2 hours to prepare and I don’t want to spend 2 hours in the kitchen, I pick something that doesn’t take as much time.

I would be surprised if that isn’t the way most people use recipes.

But I usually pick a recipe from a cook book I own. Searching for recipes online is a shitty experience.

wartijn_··on Europe’s Longest Bicycling Tunnel Opens in Norway
I wouldn't say significant. The vast majority of cyclists will use it mainly (or only) to travel to and from offices/schools/universities/shops. A tunnel that's closed at night will still be really useful. Especially if the alternative is not having a tunnel due to safety concerns.

wartijn_··on Netflix loses 1M users in Spain over password policing
They still expect more paying customers from this step.

> Last week Netflix missed expectations for new subscribers in the first quarter, but the company said that the password-policing plan and a cheaper streaming version with ads will accelerate growth in the second half of 2023.

They’ve ran test in a couple of countries. Maybe an initial drop in subscribers followed by an increase is in line with their expectations.

wartijn_··on A runner who leads every pack and then vanishes
> This is completely false

No it isn't. The comment to stop eating carbs was aimed at someone who is trying to do a half marathon in less that 2 hours. Like you say yourself this is way to short to deplete your carbs, so to just stop eating carbs seems like exactly the "bad advice that needs a lot of heavy caveats" that the parent poster was talking about.

wartijn_··on Nokia launches DIY repairable budget Android phone
There is a huge gab between high and low and devices. Some manufacturers will want to sell - and many consumers will buy- a few models that are more expensive than $150 but less than $1000.
wartijn_··on Let's build a Chrome extension that steals as much data as possible
That would make the password manager plugin I use extremely annoying to use. I want that plugin to read every page I visit so it can detect username and password fields. The same goes for many other extensions, like ad blockers. They should block all ads they can find, without constantly needing to annoy users with permission prompts.
wartijn_··on How to build a super-slim smart mirror
That has been the situation ever since the worldwide chip shortage hit. Raspberry Pi (the company) decided to prioritize companies that use Raspberry Pi's in their products over consumers. So it became almost impossible to get a Raspberry Pi, unless you were willing to pay a huge markup to a scalper.

The situation should improve this year though.

> As a result, we can say with confidence that, after a lean first quarter, we expect supply to recover to pre-pandemic levels in the second quarter of 2023, and to be unlimited in the second half of the year.

wartijn_··on Web Push for Web Apps on iOS and iPadOS
Desktop browsers don't have this limitation and I never have to play that game. It's just a stetting where you can choose to allow websites to ask for notification permission, or block it from every website.
wartijn_··on IKEA made a smart air quality sensor to track indoor pollution
That article is linked a few times in these comments, but I think it should be noted that that article is written by a competitor. Airgradient is a commercial company that sells air quality sensors. And it seems to be the only source that states the Ikea sensor is imprecise, so I wouldn't call it "notoriously imprecise"
