waratuman··on Gecko-Inspired Window Washing Robot is Powered Entirely by Water
powered by "water pressure"
waratuman··on Octopart, The Little Startup That Hung In There
This is my favorite YC startup. I remember in college trying to design and build my computer. It was just awesome to have all the parts, data sheets, and price in one spot. Sure beets an excel sheet, keeping track of data sheets, and going everywhere to find every last part! Glad to hear they hung in there and are doing well!
waratuman··on Softlayer Cloud: An operations guy's rant about really bad service
While I do agree that you many not be able to handle a 2400% increase in under 43 seconds I don't think this is a realistic expectation.

I don't think that all products will have to deal with the 2400% or even a 100% increase in traffic. It really comes down to what the product is. Most products don't even reach such gains. So while there is a 0 chance they can take the increase, there is a low chance (probably under 10, maybe even under 1%) that the traffic will ever increase.

Basically: optimize later.

waratuman··on Ask HN: What to read instead of Techcrunch?
The Mises Daily (http://mises.org/daily/) is awesome. It is a welcome break to technical articles. It can get quite in depth though. The subject is interesting given the current economic climate, and this site has so much great content. Its not a light read, but well worth diving into.
waratuman··on Probabilistic processors possibly pack potent punch
Wow, someone went for alliteration!
waratuman··on Using node.js, backbone.js, socket.io, and redis to make a real time chat app
Good point. Never thought of it that way. Even so there are a lot that seem to make it to the front page.
waratuman··on Using node.js, backbone.js, socket.io, and redis to make a real time chat app
ah, another chat program on node.js
waratuman··on Rails 3.0.5 broke my routes and kicked my dog
Um... fix it and keep moving. Is this really worth a blog post?
waratuman··on New Biz Idea? Forget Writing a Business Plan, Use Mockingbird Instead
Don't business plans serve a different purpose then mock-ups? Are you sure you can just switch one with the other and call it the same thing. A mock-up may be contained within a business plan, but a mock-up can't replace a business plan.
waratuman··on The Path Forward: Ruby 1.9.2
I've been using Ruby 1.9.2 and the heroku gem for quite some time now. I don't think that the Heroku gem is the problem.
waratuman··on The Path Forward: Ruby 1.9.2
Awesome! I'm looking forward to this. I've started to migrate my ruby code to 1.9.2. Good to see others doing the same, especially Heroku
waratuman··on Cook up presentations with Git
This is awesome! So much better then taking a USB or downloading a file. Will definitely be using this.
waratuman··on Bookmarklet turns any webpage into a wireframe
Aren't most people trying to go from wireframe to webpage? lol
waratuman··on When Smart People are Bad Employees
This may be a little picky, but this statement just doesn't make sense: :He is fundamentally a rebel—She will not be happy unless"

Where did the she come from?

waratuman··on Cassandra vs MongoDB vs CouchDB vs Redis vs Riak comparison
You mention that some of these solution could be used in the Financial industry. I would be cautious of using these, especially since some are eventually consistent. If you are just tracking data these may be fine though.
waratuman··on This Kid Will Do Whatever You Want in Antartica
Did someone tell TechCrunch that Stanford isn't Ivy League?
waratuman··on Code Fearlessly
This would mean more if it came from Dane. Saying "I said two words to Dane that changed him forever" isn't cutting it for me.
waratuman··on Keeping node.js servers up forever
Use Upstart.
waratuman··on 100 Naked Citizens: 100 Leaked Body Scans
What! The spec are always right! Always.
waratuman··on Why The Shortage Of UI Engineers Is Going To Get Worse
usabilitycounts.com, your site is down. Seriously usability counts.
waratuman··on Creating a Quadrotor autopilot with Clojure & Flight Simulator
Interesting, but I would never use the JVM in a real time system, or embedded system for that matter.
waratuman··on Ask HN: recommendations for domain registrars
again, I love namecheap. All domains are with them
waratuman··on Justin.tv open sources iPhone push library (Ruby)
I can't believe such a small library is getting so much attention.
waratuman··on Octobot - A Low-Latency, Highly Parallel Distributed Task Queue Worker
Interesting, but won't ever use. It also seems that it is just wrapping typical queueing systems, which I would use anyways because this only supports the JVM.
waratuman··on Review my weekend HTML5 project: DropMocks
Dude, that is sick
waratuman··on Heroku: Announcing the Add-on Provider Program
The add-on that I've built has the provisioning system and server management portion on Heroku.
waratuman··on Ask HN: Heroku or Not?
Use Heroku is the simple answer. Unless you have specific needs for background processing or do some stuff that is not in Ruby, use Heroku. This is especially true if you have not set up a production system before.
waratuman··on Announcing ... MathML! (WebKit)
This is awesome. I've been waiting for this for a while.
waratuman··on 10,000+ users in 24 hours & YC funding a few days later: lessons learnt
Great response. I would say that developing on Heroku and Google App Engine drives practices that lead to the ability to scale. This can be done with any hosting provider, as long as you are ready and know what to do.
waratuman··on 10,000+ users in 24 hours & YC funding a few days later: lessons learnt
I agree with most of this post except that you should build to scale. Scaling isn't what you should be focused on. If you focus on this you will loose sight of the product you should be developing and responding to user feedback.
