You all participate in society, so you get it. Advertising has become a tragedy of the commons and 2nd order effects are things like negative engagement and body dysmorphia. There needs to be a vice tax for advertisements to stop them from being bolted on everywhere. Lobbyists, smart policy makers, economists and lawmakers can come together to find the right mix. However, we should disincentivize it AND use it to make up for budget shortfalls.
The ruling and situation aside, to what degree is it possible to enforce something like this and what are the penalties? Even in GDPR and other data protection cases, it seems super hard to enforce. Directives to keep or delete data basically require system level access, because the company can always CRUD their data whenever they want and whatever is in their best interest. Data can ask to be produced to a court periodically and audited which could maybe catch an individual case, I guess. There is basically no way to know without literally seizing the servers in an extreme case. Also, the consequences in most cases are a fine.
So it's really small potatoes to me. If some idiot willingly buys a cord for 50x the market price, that is largely on them.
Further, the Democratic party has a 27% approval rating and the Republican party had like 47% and I bet its falling. So even within your narrow framework this is a bad proxy because both are clearly unpopular.
For me, I bought a single DRM book against my better judgement because it was the only available way to get it quickly at the time. Predictably, I eventually lost access to it and never bought another one since.
I haven't really believed in aliens existing on earth for most of my adult life. However, I have sort of come around to at least entertaining the idea in recent years but would need solid photographic or video evidence. I am now convinced that aliens could basically land in broad daylight in 3 years while being heavily photographed and it would easily be able to be explained away as AI. Especially if governments want to do propaganda or counter propaganda.
Yes, and they owe their current existence to Uber paving the way for them.
This is likely the most common complaint about DEI, it provides grounds for race based discrimination and lowers the bar. I am sure this was not the only government agency that did something like this and it will really hurt the Democrats chances of success for the future. Their core messaging has really boiled down to "black and brown people, women and LGBTQ are our constituency" and predictably this has turned a lot of people off the party. Especially since they haven't really delivered much even for these groups.
I use Kagi now as I can tune my searches with rankings and the results are quite good. I am sure Google could create the best and most amazing search experience with little effort. I would happily pay $20 a month for that service.
For now, Kagi and LLMs have brought some of the utility back for search and I am optimistic as the technology of AI improves that information retrieval will significantly improve as search providers will be forced to compete and the technology will evolve
Moderation of bots and some content makes sites useable as long as everyone agrees what is OK and what is not OK. Thats how HN functions
