walski··on RIP Flynn.io
In this case there is a very recent version of their landing page on archive.org: https://web.archive.org/web/20210203121152/https://flynn.io/

(Not that the page had changed in any meaningful way in pretty much forever)

walski··on The Amiga 1000 Parceiro
Does HN combine threads? If so, there's been a submission a couple of days ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25585201
walski··on Ruby 3.0
Seems like 0.8.0 might be fixing this.
walski··on Ruby 3.0
The BZ2 archive is currently (?) missing from https://cache.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/3.0/ for the 3.0.0 release version.

ruby-install uses that by default on my Mac and is failing.

This works in the interim: ruby-install -u https://cache.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/3.0/ruby-3.0.0.tar.gz ruby 3.0.0

walski··on Show HN: Self-hosted offline Internet from your browsing history
see: https://github.com/c9fe/22120#why-not-warc-or-another-format...

> Both WARC and MHTML require mutilatious modifications of the resources so that the resources can be "forced to fit" the format. At 22120, we believe this is not required

walski··on Making Advanced GUI Applications with Godot
The cited laws only cover public bodies, though. They are not applicable to websites or applications built in the private sector.
walski··on Show HN: Little Automatic Racing Game in WebGL with Three.js and Oimo.js
What is this?! I don't get how it's a racing game.
walski··on The Twilio API for WhatsApp
Can business accounts on WhatsApp be part of groups?
walski··on Base Rails 5.1 application with pre-configured tools and features
Looks great. There also is https://github.com/RailsApps/rails-composer which seems to be a little more modular in what it sets the app up with. It had a Rails 5.1 upgrade Kickstarter a while back, but I'm not sure what came out of that. The project looks a little abandoned.
walski··on Ask HN: How do you start giving tech talks?
My first couple of talks were in front of huge groups of people at well known tech conferences and they all were blatant disasters. I wish I would have made so many things differently...

BUT: I DID START GIVING TALKS!

That in itself was one of the biggest achievements in my professional life! So if there is one advice, for me it would be: Get going!

Put all thoughts of: "I need a better topic." or "I need a more suitable occasion" or "I need a smaller audience". Just go. Stop worrying, hand in your CFPs and start moving. Build momentum and get your feet wet.

walski··on The Ruby Toolbox is broken
Concerning this wonderful site: https://www.ruby-toolbox.com/ which has been around for ages and is/was one of the best sources to find the right tool for whatever adventure you were up to in Ruby land. Big shout-out to Christoph for creating and maintaining this amazing little helper for so long! <3

Check out the Max-Planck-Institut's twitter account for more coverage: https://twitter.com/PlasmaphysikIPP (mostly German news with some English tweets)
walski··on Ask HN: Course material to teach (adult) friends how to code?
Thanks everyone!
walski··on Ask HN: What's THE way to setup a OS X dev machine 2015?
Any recommendations for good and ready to use base boxes there?
walski··on Why I Love Basic Auth
Hey, nice write up. As you said in the article it is a controversial topic and I definitively see that "bandwagon effect" when it comes to using OAuth in favor of Basic Auth. One thing I'm a bit worried about, though whenever I use Basic Auth is the longevity of it's credentials. The lack of tokens automatically means that as long as the dev does not implement some "credential rotation" mechanism (carried out either manually or automatically) leaked credentials become a long lasting problem.

OAuth is not perfect by any means but this scares me away from Basic Auth a lot. Especially given the fact that those "leaks" might go by unnoticed. Using some authentication mechanism with short-lived tokens mitigates this risk at least in the long run as leaked tokens will just expire.

walski··on So Coded Conf: Monks, Web and Confetti
Hey, unfortunately that's true. We had this great idea of an awesome monk video, did all the shooting and editing etc and after trying to find a pure HTML playback solution that worked everywhere we had to stop at some point. So: SORRY! Really meaning that, it's just a matter of how much of our spare time can go into the website as there is so much more to organize. The easiest way is to checkout: http://2015-info.socoded.com if you experience any trouble. That should work across the board.
walski··on Ask HN? How would you implement SSO for Rails apps?
I had pretty good experience with building authentication/identity providers with Doorkeeper in Rails. Your clients would then use Omniauth or the Oauth2 directly to login via that provider. I'm boarding a plane right now, so that pulling those projects up for you is a bit tedious but just google them. Cheers!
walski··on Cosmos Browser – Connect to the Internet via SMS, no data or wifi required
Wow, this is like the mobile era's acoustic coupler :D what's not to like about something that weird?!
walski··on Fragmentation in the Ruby Community
With all due respect, I would strongly disagree here. Rails is big, for sure. But beyond that there is soo much going on at the language level (best example here are the awesome folks working on MRI and Rubinius), Ruby (not Rails) is taught in universities today, we have strong companies backing all sorts of Ruby craziness (check the weekly GitHub newsletter and their staff picks) and last but not least Rails itself is helping the development of core Ruby by its sheer size and it's excellent habit of trying to target the latest Ruby versions with every new release, these days.

Don't get me wrong, there definitively is way to improve and make people more aware of how Ruby can be outside of Rails but I don't think Rails is poisoning our ecosystem, quite to the contrary it is one of Ruby's biggest asset.

Every language has it's chasms. Python seems to split on 2 vs. 3, JS can't decide on a solid tool chain for longer than 3 weeks and Ruby has the big Rails/Ruby divide. Only thing we can do is embrace diversity and create opportunities for those in the other camp to tinker with some of the things we love.

walski··on fork() can fail
Thanks! Definitively in my "shit I should know but didn't before HN schooled me"-top-10 :)
walski··on Rails 4.2.0 beta1: Active Job, Deliver Later, Adequate Record, Web Console
Totally agree, still funny how long foreign keys have been absent from vanilla Rails ;) But I guess their lack just didn't cause enough pain for someone to add them (at least it didn't for me)
walski··on So Coded Early Bird Ticket Sale / Hamburg, Germany / Sept 19/20th
Hey bliker, we want So Coded to be an awesome event and all the bells and whistles come at a price (speaker expenses, catering, party, etc). But we also want it to be a super including conference! So we actually do have a limited amount of student tickets available at 110€. Shoot me a mail thorben@socoded.com if you are interested.
walski··on An Angled Mind – Why AngularJS is awesome
Totally true. I chose the example as I think a lot of people do it that way right now. Sure you can write pretty good code with jQuery. AngularJS just makes it a lot easier.
