wahsd··on German foundation says democracy is declining worldwide
While I agree with you regarding the methodology, I think there is still some significant support for the overall premise. The thing that may be surprising and even rejected by many though is that my sense based on deep and broad insight is that the underpinning social attitudes are overshooting a correction triggered, really, by a negligence that had been allowed to permeate the west for a couple decades now.

"Democracy" is being eroded and undermined by the naive well intentioned types that wear their bleeding heart on their sleeves; the threat is really not even the "far right" or the "fascists". The real risk is the unseen, unrealized one that stares back at us when we look into the mirror. It is never the obvious risk that gets you. What is really eating its way through the "west" is a good example of unintended consequences and cascading failures that are permeating through society, politics, and government with elan.

wahsd··on Why is Google allowing this popular app to violate so many Google Play rules?
And here one of the many huge flaws of Google's lazy approach to gate-keeping it's app ecosystem is exposed.

Hell, who WOULDN'T do that for $30,000 daily ad income.

wahsd··on Apple Is Said to Be Working on an iPhone Even It Can’t Hack
One aspect of what all this comes down to is that governments don't want to have to do real work or even prioritize their tracking and surveillance.

What encryption and security really does is create scarcity of access to information and data in order to force a market solution where government groups have to prioritize their efforts and apply them deliberately.

wahsd··on Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the age of surveillance
There used to be a notion that it is a quintessential right for citizens to be anonymous to the government, even if that just means choosing or even just having a choice of interacting with the Government, but also being able to choose not to and forego some things.

We are ever increasingly accelerating towards what will really be a despotic dystopia where the government has tabs on you at all times even if it is just by virtue of deduction.

wahsd··on Airport security in America discovered more than seven guns per day in 2015
I think what it means, relative to the OP claim, is that the TSA stepped up its game and is now reporting the guns it itself is trying to smuggle past itself as the subject guns that are being detected at airports.

If you know how the government works, that is the only plausible explanation.

wahsd··on Disappointed with Europe, Thousands of Iraqi Migrants Return Home
What you don't quite get is that you are tired of other people having to deal with your demands and not even helping those who need the help. You think the 80% of these colonists that are male and paid thousands of dollars to get to Europe are really the needy ones? ??? Just to be clear... not the women and children that were not among the ones arriving in Germany after passing through dozens of countries where they were safe. You are supporting the squander of other people's tax money on freeloaders and benefits shoppers that are colonizing Europe and leaving the most vulnerable and weak behind where they came from. You want to help people, try not being ACTUALLY selfish by making this about making yourself feel better about how good of a person you are for taking in people ....... who don't need to be taken in, while those who do need help are left destitute where they should be taken care of in the region.
wahsd··on We Need a Better PC
Hell, even now the possibly best laptop, the Dell XPS with that sexy edgeless screen, still has a shitty ass touchpad compared to even a 7 year old MBP. And let's not get started on the fact that the best quality control of PCs is so shit that you're almost guaranteed to have regrets. There is simply nothing that even comes close to Apple's build quality. You can use a 5 yo MBP and it still run just as good as a new PC laptop for all the 80% of task you would need it for. It's really pretty damn amazing.
wahsd··on Uber's Design Meltdown
Ok, now scale down that image about 25 times to icon size. This one is about 4 times larger than the used icon.
wahsd··on Uber's Design Meltdown
Not to detract but it's a somewhat similar issue albeit probably will never elevate to the same level, but LastPass also just went through a logo redesign and it's equally rather puzzling.

The logo went from

to

Considering things like that the three dots simply look like any number of other menu icons, especially on android where you can have three of those ellipsis type of icons in one view sometimes; I'm not sure that was all that smart of an idea. In case you didn't notice/realize it like I didn't, that's a cursor at the end of what are supposed to be three hidden characters. It's just an odd choice in my opinion.

wahsd··on Uber's Design Meltdown
Yeah. That's a bad idea. ...when you see it
wahsd··on Disappointed with Europe, Thousands of Iraqi Migrants Return Home
What bugs me the most about this situation is people like you who always find it easy being pro-other-people-paying-the-price. How about you liquidate your assets and send them off to pay for these "refugees" since you are so for this. How about you take in random people and then pay for their expenses in your house. It's always easy obligating other people, isn't it? That's the whole problem with this whole "social/ism" notion that it puts people in power to decide the fate and obligations of others.

wahsd··on Britain to Foreign Workers: If You Don't Make $50,000 a Year, Please Leave
I know this won't be popular here at all for a couple reasons, one being that there are many who are like you immigrants or want to become immigrants; but thing is, beyond the individual interests and advantages of immigrating to a better place, there are massive impacts on a macro level that people don't quite consider in their pursuit of those self interests. What immigration really does, among other things, is drain capacity and even capital from countries that not only may have funded the education, but also are then losing intellectual and technical capacity. It is really not only a detriment to source countries, it is also a detriment to destination countries like the USA where immigrants like you are used as tools to ratchet salaries downward and also detracts and defuses pressures to improve the education system to supply the supposed missing supply.

I get that many people don't quite get it, and it's difficult to wrap ones mind around something one has a self-interest in not acknowledging or seeing through the propaganda that the wealthy use to fool the majority to go along with things that are counter to their own interests in favor of the interest of the wealthy and powerful. Reality though is that immigration is really a rather nasty neo-colonialist ruse that is really just a huge wealth concentration mechanism.

wahsd··on Do Elite Colleges Lead to Higher Salaries? Only for Some Professions
Is it just me or is there no discussion of the salaries being adjusted for, at least, rough cost of living? I am guessing that all we are really looking at is the effectiveness of the Universities placing people in high salary markets due to cost of living.

wahsd··on A Traffic Cop’s Ticket Bonanza in a Poor Texas Town
Well, to be fair, if you are jailing people you are taking drivers off the road and thus making them safer. And considering they seem to be jailing people with driving related offenses, it's probably a true statement. Whether it is a morally defensible course of action is a totally different story though.
wahsd··on A Traffic Cop’s Ticket Bonanza in a Poor Texas Town
I like how they provide the cost of jailing people and the revenue, but no mention of the administrative cost and the "expensive" cost of the system. I have a suspicion that if you did the accounting properly, you would probably come up with a net decrease in income, not to mention the economic impact of debtor prison.
wahsd··on San Francisco Bubble
If only that were the case. Especially in the internet age, one would expect that you could work in some far off place where you can get a mansion on a huge piece of land and have a drive jusr for the amount you pay in rent in SF, yet for some reason (it's free money bubble, stupid) people, i.e., kids that drank the Tech Crunch Kool-Aid, all cram into tiny little apartments to do useless shit. Ultimately the missing element from the market is rational actors.
wahsd··on Dell XPS 15 review: A bigger version of the best PC laptop
It really seems like Dell is trying as hard as it can to not really present any kind of danger to Apple.
wahsd··on Dell XPS 15 review: A bigger version of the best PC laptop
I really wish Dell could comprehend just how much ill will and outright damage they cause to their brand with all the useless trashware they put on their systems. McAfee?? Really? That, and that horrible webcam they put in there. It's just screams "I'm a low quality piece of junk" far louder than any positives can make up for.

wahsd··on Apple Safari users suffer crashes
I think you are underestimating the impact of the subtle nature of the differences. For me, it really kind of annoys me that FF seems to have a looser UI than Chrome. It's those couple of pixels of padding between address bar and tabs, it's the wider/longer tab due to padding, etc..

And now that I think about it, it's even things like the tab behavior where Chrome condenses tabs and FF just pushes them out of view an adds the disgusting scroll UI. Maybe that's a personal preference thing, but I would very much prefer having a dense overview rather than having what is essentially a nested scrolling.

wahsd··on Apple Safari users suffer crashes
I don't know what it is, but I agree. There is something subtly and subconsciously going on that nudges me away from FF too. I think it's the loose feeling UI, the default smiley face icon of the chat that I don't know anyone uses, the paper airplane as the share icon. It's that there is still not unified search/address bar even if one would prefer it without running a poorly executed extension. It's that the tabs feel so childish with the far too rounded corners and loose padding and it's even the few pixels more of padding between the address bar and the tabs boundary. It's the small font of the address bar, it's the disproportionately large back button, it's the apparent lack of design and style requirements for extension icons that make them look blurry and generally shitty and bolted on in the UI, etc.

I know that all that maybe sounds rather petty and maybe there's something wrong with me and it's my biases for some reason, but it just all adds up to a fuzzy notion of childishness and less than "down to business" feel. I say that as someone that used to exclusively use FF and shunned Chrome for all the various reasons mentioned by others.

wahsd··on Why BPG will replace GIFs and more
Are you the same guy from the article comments?

Granted, the Author should have been clearer about it, but BPG's is not mean to replace MP4 even though he juxtaposed them, it's about BPG's potential replacement for GIF.
