wafflesraccoon··on Weekend ‘catch-up sleep’ is a lie
Rest in peace Terry Davis, the world wasn't ready for TempleOS.
wafflesraccoon··on Yarn's Future – v2 and beyond
I'd agree with everything you've said. Flow isn't bad but after working with TypeScript I could never go back. You're spot on with the tooling and ecosystem.
wafflesraccoon··on Ocasio-Cortez Says 70% Ultra-Rich Tax Could Pay for Climate Plan
I've never really understood why there are brackets in the first place, can't we just write a function to calculate your taxes based off your total income?
wafflesraccoon··on Chinese may take over Mombasa port: Ouko
This just feels like whataboutism, no one denies that the European imperialism was bad.
wafflesraccoon··on The Oil Industry’s Covert Campaign to Rewrite American Car Emissions Rules
Not owning a car is unfortunately not a realistic reality living in all but a few US cities. Most American cities were built with the car in mind, without massive public infrastructure overall owing a car is basically a requirement.
wafflesraccoon··on The Oil Industry’s Covert Campaign to Rewrite American Car Emissions Rules
I'd argue a pickup truck does everything described better than the three vehicles you posted. Most people only have one vehicle and a pickup is simply a great jack of all trades.

I 100% agree that pickups are a American cultural icon (just look at the ads, they drip nationalism) but it is hard to argue that they are not practical.

wafflesraccoon··on The Baseline Costs of JavaScript Frameworks
I have no data here, I would guess that number would be lower today than in 2013. My reasoning being the proliferation of smart phones in second and third world countries and the general trend of more web 2.0 users, though I fully accept that this is just an educated guess.

As a web developer, for me the problem is that writing anything modern without JavaScript is a much harder task that only really benefits a small minority of users. I'm unfamiliar with any disabilities that would require JavaScript to be turned off but I could see this being a valid usecase.

wafflesraccoon··on The Baseline Costs of JavaScript Frameworks
Do you have any updated sources? This data is from 2013.
wafflesraccoon··on Is Twitter causally-consistent?
I would argue that it is closer to being unfriended on Facebook than a website removing itself from your bookmarks.
wafflesraccoon··on Google accused of 'trust demolition' over health app
Is that really Google's fault or China's for creating the policy? Google is forced to follow the local laws in the countries that it operates in.
wafflesraccoon··on Stan Lee has died
Man, I just thought he would live forever. Rest in peace.
wafflesraccoon··on YouTube CEO calls EU’s proposed copyright regulation financially impossible
genuinely curious, do you have a source for that?
wafflesraccoon··on Ford Buying San Francisco-Area E-Scooter Startup Spin
Personal anecdote, cyclists blow through stop signs because the infrastructure isn't built for bicycles. Having to come to a stop and then start up on a bicycle is the hardest part and cyclists hate it.

wafflesraccoon··on Analyzing the Walmart site performance
It has a very mid 00s feel to it, I wonder how old the codebase is.
wafflesraccoon··on My somewhat complete salary history as a software engineer
As a younger developer 58k Junior Web Developer - St. Louis, Startup (2016 - 2018) 75k Web Developer - New Mexico, Mid sized company (2018 -)
wafflesraccoon··on Is front-end development having an identity crisis?
>Developer to me is someone who develops logic, not some interaction with JavaScript.

As a front end developer this is a bit insulting. This idea that JavaScript developers are somehow "lesser" is tired and totally overlooks the complexity and challenge of modern web development.

The problem is that as a web developer you really need to know how to do all of these tasks. I'm required to make mock ups, write business logic and all of the CSS design.

wafflesraccoon··on Twitter to remove ‘like’ tool in a bid to improve the quality of debate
I use Twitter a lot (90k Tweets, 2.1k followers, my account is 8 years old), the best thing about the like is being able to end a conversation without saying anything. Liking a reply to is a great way to say "I've acknowledged your tweet with a positive connotation". I think Twitter forgets that the vast majority of content on the site isn't heated political debates but instead small communities of people who treat the website as a microblog.
wafflesraccoon··on Twitter to remove ‘like’ tool in a bid to improve the quality of debate
People retweeted things before retweets were an official feature, ie ".RT <quote they are retweeting>". Twitter adding retweets was something the community wanted.
wafflesraccoon··on Apple and Samsung fined for deliberately slowing down phones
Most of the time code does not fit into neat little boxes like that, in my professional experience thing are far more gray that just bugfixes and feature tickets.
wafflesraccoon··on Ask HN: 4 months after posting my project on HN, it has 0 users. Has it failed?
I agree, after looking over the project the first thing I thought was "I bet I could do this myself". +1 for hiding the details and adding a little jargon.
wafflesraccoon··on Cannabis is legal in Canada: What you need to know
Yep. CO in general is a very white state so I wonder how relevant that is? It is interesting regardless.
wafflesraccoon··on Cannabis is legal in Canada: What you need to know
I no longer live in CO, at this point I assume most people who buy off the black market just have a friend with a lot of plants who can grow it at a cheaper price.
wafflesraccoon··on Paper Airplane Designs
I wonder if anyone has attempted to use machine learning to try and build a better paper airplane. I feel like that would be super interesting.
wafflesraccoon··on Cannabis is legal in Canada: What you need to know
Personal anecdote, I was a heavy cannabis user in Colorado when it became legal. In the beginning most people still would purchase green from their dealer to avoid the the high tax. Over time, most people simply switched to using dispensaries for the convenience and selection. I no longer live in CO but of my cannabis friends there, almost everyone I know uses a dispensary now.
wafflesraccoon··on The next recession
Slight correction here. According to the Report on the Economic (2015), only 31% of the people responded stated that they could not cover the expense. It should also be noted that 46% of the total respondents said that they would have a hard time paying the $400.

wafflesraccoon··on The Cavendish banana is facing extinction
They have such a mealy texture, I can't stand them.
wafflesraccoon··on The tragic end of Telltale Games
Typically most states will let you file for unemployment benefits if you are laid off, these vary from state to state.
wafflesraccoon··on Ask HN: What is your best advice for a junior software developer?
Google around, check Glassdoor for dev jobs in your city. If you feel that you're under paid bring it up at your next review. If they refuse to give you more start to look for other jobs.
wafflesraccoon··on Ask HN: What did you learn the hard way?
If you want to buy something and it will require you to run monthly balance on your credit card, you can't afford it. On the flip side, credit cards are a very powerful tool that should not be ignored.
wafflesraccoon··on Voice Phishing Scams Are Getting More Clever
I'm at the point where I don't answer the phone unless I know the number calling me or I'm expecting a call.
