w0m··on Bye-bye Windows gaming? SteamOS officially expands past the Steam Deck
> Because we can't allow corporations to install rootkits and malware into people's machines?

TBF - this is You dictating what tradeoffs others are able/willing to make in their off time. I grew up playing competitive FPS; and still have a 'gaming rig' for downtime. I would looove a better state-of-the-world; and am picky about what I will play (I won't run Rivals as an example as it requires Administrator; simply won't trust the developer that much)

> These corporations are shipping literal rootkits to people

i agree most/all kernel level anti-cheats are garbage - but I also dislike strict "We can't allow..." overarching statements also. A world I dread is one where Consoles are our only legitimate home gaming option.

w0m··on Bye-bye Windows gaming? SteamOS officially expands past the Steam Deck
The issue w/ competitive gaming (League of Legends, Deadlock, Overwatch) is if you take advantage of your prerogative and cheat, you make the experience worse for everyone else; and it hurts the game itself.

The sad state of existence is that if you want to run a multiplayer game, you need to do shitty/controlling things or the game will turn unplayable as soon as it starts to become popular.

Games like BG3 however - Who cares if someone is cheating? Just stick to those (great) games if you want more control

w0m··on Bye-bye Windows gaming? SteamOS officially expands past the Steam Deck
That's kind of what they have now; just with console and (every windows machine). Better dedicated mobile hardware would be appreciated.

It is nice that GamePass can be used on my Desktop, XBox, or Laptop from my moms kitchen.

w0m··on Where is James Bond? Trapped in an ugly stalemate with Amazon
I do love the books; I'll try and watch S2 at some point...
w0m··on T2x – a CLI tool for AI-first text operations
I use a cli tool 100x/day for misc things; can hit openai or a local llm.

Has nice shell integration.

w0m··on Where is James Bond? Trapped in an ugly stalemate with Amazon
I liked most of the first season of WoT; though it got more and more divergent (and felt worse for it) as the season went on. The final episode lost me. I've been meaning to watch the second season but haven't been able to bring myself to do it yet. (I say this as one who happily completed multiple rereads of the original series as new books came out)
w0m··on Keeping a Changelog at Work (2020)
The value of private isn't as much that it can't be used against you; but that you don't have to bother with the cognitive load of sanitizing it.

I currently use a plugin that opens up a Daily Log each morning as I open my editor; and populates it with a template

ToDone: * ToDo: * Blockers: *

First thing I try and do each morning as I catch up on email/overnight test results is fill it out as an outline of talking points before the daily Standup.

Throughout the day I try and keep a running list of task I work on down int he daily log; often with comments like 'why the everlovingfuck did jason delete the prod db' and a general summary of problems and how I solved (or didn't solve) them.

Outside of a personal knowledge database, when review time comes along it makes it much easier to summarize what I've worked on also.

w0m··on Microsoft Confirms Password Deletion for 1B Users
To summarize this comment chain, the initial argument is 'passkeys are not impervious to all attacks therefore they are security theater' vs 'passkeys help significantly in the most common attacks, therefore they are worthwhile.'

Statistics are hard. People have a bad habit of seeing 'not 100% fullproof' and thinking that said something is therefore worthless. Same senseless argument people made in the 80s against wearing seatbelts, and 4 years ago thinking it was a legitimate argument against wearing masks in the middle of a pandemic.

w0m··on Microsoft Confirms Password Deletion for 1B Users
same argument/logic works to justify not wearing seat belts or hell, not outlawing murder. "Won't stop/save everyone so not worth doing".

w0m··on Ask HN: I don't want to code anymore. What else can I do?
Become a manager. Talk to your manager, most decently sized organizations have clear paths. I've been offered coursework to prep for the transition a number of times now in multiple companies. If you haven't yet, seek it out. You can also possibly take a new IC job at a different company that offers clearer paths / training for the move.
w0m··on Mozilla's Firefox browser turns 20. Does it still matter?
I daily FF; and every couple weeks i have to open up whatever isn't working in Edge or Chrome to continue. It's usually a banking website or similar.
w0m··on Even Microsoft Notepad is getting AI text editing now
> Notepad got some of that just in 2024

I assume this was the 1:1 correlated w/ the deprecation/removal of wordpad, as both were shipped everywhere prior.

w0m··on Trump wins presidency for second time
That's such a copout deflection; was it FEMA budget? Was it even national funds? The hypocrisy is astounding. Pick something that is copmpletely but TRANSGENDER or IMMIGRANT or SCARY DARK PERSON and make up a bunch of absolute tripe around it, then scream about how 'liberal media' is misleading you.
w0m··on Trump wins presidency for second time
> that people on the right feel constantly lied to by institutions and media figures, and disingenuous rebuttals like this don't help, they hurt

Trumps literally running on Tariffs and fixing inflation. Claiming you can do both and it's disingenuous to combine them when discussing each candidates approach is honestly asinine. "Yes, he's pro-gun! but He's also in favor of confiscating all guns. But they're two different policies so it's a disingenuous rebuttal to link them."

> how far their credibility has fallen with the common person

This is True. Somehow there's an incredible double standard at play in the minds of waaaay too many.

In the middle of a national emergency, Trump toured the country spouting fabricated tales about Kamala wasting FEMAs budget on transgender surgery for migrants - which had a clear and direct adverse affect on the actual recovery efforts as multiple centers had to deal with bomb threats, armed insurgents, and a general hostile populace as they tried to help people. It was of course all fabricated idiocy that directly hurt the very people who needed help the most, but that's not "constantly lied to"?

"He just talks, you can't assume anything he states is true or that he'll follow through" is incredibly stupid because people really do believe him, and it's incredibly damaging to the core of our country. But somehow he gets a free pass, while calling out his exact words is "constantly lied to".

w0m··on Trump wins presidency for second time
> I don't think it's right to say he didn't offer anything specific

I mean; he offered 'specifics' - they simply didn't make any sense on cursory examination. How to fight inflation? Tariffs! How to make already expensive goods cheaper? Tarriffs!

Hell, re: deporting illegals, he didn't even bother to do that his first term, Obama did it at a dramatically higher rate.

It's all a "I'll fix everything by doing nothing" smokescreen.

w0m··on Why Companies Are Ditching the Cloud: The Rise of Cloud Repatriation
I mean; it's impossible to plan for everything, and I'd argue that if you actually did plan for everything; it would be so extraordinarily overbuilt that it couldn't be considered 'correct'.
w0m··on Microsoft just delayed Recall again
> privacy-first focus at Apple

I'd argue Apple is more an "Invade the privacy but keep quiet about it" with a shiny and aggressive ad campaign toting privacy from (others, but conspicuously not apple).

w0m··on Microsoft just delayed Recall again
Historically, the comparison from Apple is simply "Spy on me - but pretend you don't through shiny advertising". What's a better is up for interpretation I think.
w0m··on Microsoft just delayed Recall again

How is that different than disabling Recall on first boot/setup?

w0m··on Show HN: I made a git rebase TUI editor
> IMHO the guideline should be "clean up your branch and rebase it before merging

In my experience, engineers tend to fall into 1 of 2 camps: 'Deep' Git knowledge who routinely dig through reflog and keep backup branches, commit early/often and autosquash logcal chunks until their PRs tell a Story through their commit history. The other side pretends git is p4; and has no concept of fetch vs pull vs rebase. A base assumption that branches are expensive and to be avoided.

I'd like to think probably fall in the middle, but nearly every engineer I've worked with falls on those edges based on the number of DMs i get asking for help after after the rote `git stash; git pull; git stash pop` throws conflict.

w0m··on Show HN: I made a git rebase TUI editor
I generally dislike being told how to handle my commit history as 'i can do it better' - but this is really true.

Commit history on a (larger?) PR tends to be most useful during the PR itself; I tend try and make my commits tell a story I can walk people through (on the CLI during a call) moreso than anything that will be useful in 6mo/year.

I've been convinced on Squash/Merge. If the PR needs more granular commits; maybe it should be 2 independent PRs.

w0m··on Show HN: NotesHub: cross-platform, Markdown-based note-taking app
tbf; all data stored in markdown theoretically solves that.

I currently use Foam on VSCode for notetakng / personal project management. But 2/3rds of my actual typing tends to be inside NeoVim following the foam format (vscode vs vim on the day is determined more by what i'm working on that day vs anything else). I'm constantly on the lookout for a better* system; but haven't found one yet as sometimes I want a UI; but Grep and quick jots inside the terminal is just very useful.

w0m··on Let's talk about animation quality
honestly, that's the same argument people made against photographs when the technology became available. Same argument made against the printing press.

New tools aren't inherently inferior, they open up new opportunities.

w0m··on Let's talk about animation quality
> I'd feel scammed if it wasn't clearly labelled as AI

TBF - have you looked at a digital photo made in the last decade? Likely had significant 'AI' processing applied to it. That's why I call it a regressive pattern to dislike anything with a new label attached - it minimizes at best and often flat out ignores the very real work very real artists put in to leverage the new tools.

w0m··on Let's talk about animation quality
That's an over simplification I think. If you're only generating a video because 'I can oooh AI' - then of course no one wants it. If you treat the tools as what they are, Tools - then people may want it.

No one really cares about a tech demo, but if generative tools help you make a cool music video to an awesome song? People will want it.

Well, as long as they aren't put off by a regressive stigma against new tool at least.
