vvvv··on Finding Your Soul Mate Online May Be Harder Than the Dating Sites Suggest
However, divorce rates have dropped in recent years and are lower than 20 years ago: http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2010/jan/28/divorce...

Could it be that by being more picky, we give ourselves a better chance of staying together?

EDIT: I found a more recent one with a relative rate vs. marriages: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/12011714/Divorce-rate...

It may be that, as the article suggests, the decrease in % divorce rates has dropped partly due to the increase in social acceptability of cohabitation, allowing couples to try it out before getting married.

Nevertheless, taking simply divorce rates into account, the situation has improved from 20 years ago.

vvvv··on Chip, Implanted in Brain, Helps Paralyzed Man Regain Control of Hand
There have been several such operations, e.g. http://www.livescience.com/49991-bionic-eye-implanted-man.ht...

"A bionic eye implant is now allowing a blind man to see the outlines of his wife after 10 years in darkness.

"The implant, called a retinal prosthesis, consists of a small electronic chip that is placed at the back of the eye to send visual signals directly into the optic nerve. This bypasses the damaged cells in the man's retina.

"The bionic eye doesn't have enough electrodes to recreate the details of human faces, but for the first time since he lost his vision, the man can make out the outlines of people and things, and walk without a cane."

vvvv··on Welsh funeral service interrupted by pornography played on Smart TV
At least he was already stiff.

This may seem humorous at first, but seriously... it makes me a little bit sad that normal people can't even sort their TV's out any more without an "engineer".

vvvv··on The EU’s new internet rules will hurt the continent’s startups
I feel that this is such an important topic. The EU is an easy target for blame shifting, the opponents are so much more vocal and the union itself may be under threat in not too distant future.

I think it needs better marketing and PR, and for us, individual pro-EU citizens to not allow our local politicians to divert attention from their incapabilities.

vvvv··on Children of the Yuan Percent: Everyone Hates China's Rich Kids
That is exactly the control mechanism that was used by a number of Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, to prevent the Arab Spring revolutions from happening within their borders. They handed out billions of cash to the populace.

"...the Saudi state began spending $130 billion to pump up civil servant salaries (paying two extra months’ salaries)"

"In Kuwait, at around the same time, the state increased civil servant salaries by 115 percent at a cost of more than $1 billion, and at an additional cost of $5 billion, gave a cash handout of Kuwaiti Dinar (KD) 1000 to its citizens and promised free distribution of foodstuffs for fourteen months"

vvvv··on As More Tech Startups Stay Private, So Does the Money
Running a private company is significantly cheaper and less onerous than running a public one.

Stock market volatility resulting from irrationality of certain classes of investors (% weight depending on the sector), in extreme cases, can break even a healthy company.

vvvv··on Lone Geniuses Are Overrated
Horses for courses. I don't enjoy overly complex business-speak but I do sometimes like reading novels where you even have to refer to footnotes to fully understand the word plays and cultural/historical connotations. Certain writers would have spent days and weeks crafting a single sentence to perfection and I appreciate the effort.

vvvv··on Window into Airbnb’s hidden impact on SF
From the perspective of a home owner, if I rented my flat out, I'd definitely include a no subletting clause. I'd also love to have a way to temporarily blacklist my property on AirBnB and other such sites.
vvvv··on Window into Airbnb’s hidden impact on SF
I wouldn't call CS a "free service". It's supposed to be more of a community. It's great for meeting people and learning their way of life, but if I travel on business or when I know I won't have much time to spend with the host, I find alternative accommodation.

I don't know why you got donwvoted, your comment is perfectly valid. Plenty of case studies about Anglo-Saxons making silly linguistic faux pas in other countries, including China. China has a huge domestic market but the companies there will eventually also have business case studies warning against "shitty" linguistic mistakes ;)
