vulpes··on Ask HN: How to handle a potential sudden huge traffic load tonight?
S3 amazon link to download, stripped down version at the ready if your current site will start generating too much load. Dreamhost loves to suspend accounts which use too many recourses so to prepare I would move your site over to something more reliable like a small slicehost slice. At the very least you should lower your TTL on the domain to 10 minutes and as soon as you see your site go down, open up a new account at slice and switch over quickly.
vulpes··on I'm using Git because it makes me feel cool
Hold on a second, people are onto Thinkpads and Linux? I never got that memo!
vulpes··on How should I market this game?
1. Get blogs interested in the app, VentureBeat has been reviewing a ton of apps lately. 1a. Give out few redeem codes in return for a review, blogs love it.

2. Word of Mouth, wether it be twitter, facebook updates, social events impressing people with your mad memory skills, people talk and their friends listen.

3. Comptention - best way to do it is through webcharts and ingame leaderboards. If a friend just got 120k points in a game, I'm going to buy it just so I can beat him.

4. Get out of Games category, other categories are easier to get to the top lists of and therefore will help bring in sales. Not sure if you can switch categories later once you are selling enough to be featured.

I have seen these suggestions work for other apps but I speak from observational stand point as I have never promoted any iPhone app, so take that as you will.

vulpes··on What Open Source Can’t Do
Those don't use Linux kernel? Cmon.
vulpes··on Ask HN: Review my webapp.
I was excited for the twitter integration until I tried to figure out how it worked and was met with "email us because regular people are not worthy" note on the blog. Not helpful. Is it that much work to write a blog post explaining how it works and then link it next to the twitter setup field in the preferences?
vulpes··on Ask HN: Review my webapp.
One suggestion: bang out free iPhone app as soon as possible and get going on a gmail widget, and you will win doves of users that do not want to pay for RTM premium features (myself included)

Now they just need to open source it so the world at large can enjoy this beautiful font.
vulpes··on 20 questions game that works astonishingly well
Entourage is underrepresented :)
vulpes··on How to prevent the App Store from becoming the Crap Store
All this would do is force the prices the other way. People would be trying to sell crap for more using WOM or some other way to inflate 'box office revenue' and once they are on the list, instead of lowering the price to stay on it, they'd be increasing it. While that will get rid of crapware for .99, it will drive the prices of the same soft up, ultimately hurting the consumer. Best solution to this is app genius that recommends apps based on what you want to do.

Until that happens, use word of mouth to your advantage. Use Google Mobile App as an example of online campaign. Once techies get your app on their phone, they will be the platform for homing in their less tech friends to your apps.

vulpes··on One Big Reason For Apple's Market Share Gains.
This type of service really depends on location. A store here in Boulder is so backed up you cannot make a same day or even next day appointment which means the 5-7 day repair is suddenly 7-10 day repair and even then its closer to 10 business days than 7. While thats not the case in less busy areas, it really does depend on the store, so they aren't delivering more because they're Apple, but because they don't have as much work to do.
vulpes··on Raganwald now 'blogging' on GitHub
Issue with that is no fulltext posts. Of course you can always hack together a Y! pipe that takes the post body HTML and adds it to the feed, but that seems like a lot of hackery just to get an RSS feed going.
vulpes··on GMail gets auto-replies
Lets hope that next feature of google labs will be the ability to turn it on in Google Apps
vulpes··on You can now use Backtype to import your News.YC comments on FriendFeed
Indeed, I had some problems setting up backtype (my coworkers link to our blog as well) but I think they were fixed after I entered my actual name. It would be great if backtype made that option stand out better in UI as well allow me to filter using more than 1 name, other than that the service has been coming together very nicely since its launch.

One thing that hasn't be suggested is Twitter, twitter with local people and a lot of times you cross some amazing individuals
vulpes··on IPhone SDK Tutorial: Build a Simple RSS reader for the iPhone
Lets hope apple won't sick the lawyers on this one. NDA is still very much in effect and the recent iPhoneDevCamp really suffered because of that.
vulpes··on Ask HN: What's wrong with all those dating sites?
woome.com attempts to recreate that, in fact almost exactly like you are describing...eerie.
vulpes··on Ask HN: Setting up an open source project.
On the topic of hosting, has anyone been able to get into [Codebase](http://codebasehq.com/) beta? It looks very cool on the surface but I couldn't find any hosted projects to play around with. I submitted our info a while back, heard nothing so far.
vulpes··on Ask HN: Setting up an open source project.
I have a question that is along the same lines, if we have a project that we want to open source and basically make money on service contracts what is the best open source license to go with?
vulpes··on Show and Tell YC: Built a webapp in ~14 hours
Very very cool, what did you program in? Have you had any previous experience with Twitter API/RSS feeds? Reason being if you are pretty versed in rss feed pulling/image generation the backend is done pretty quickly, as most of it is just knowing how to do it. I'd imagine you spent more time on making it look pretty. Does it automatically filter out replies and such?
vulpes··on Investing in a Quality Programming Chair

vulpes··on Avoid PHP trap
Usually blog spam means the blog in question took content already available and stole it. Think of it as e-plagiarism.
vulpes··on Ask HN: Please critique my webapp
Judging by the fact that until they came under open and public criticism they had 3 mysql servers running and a very small development team the only thing twitter was doing wrong was not spending their money.
vulpes··on How I hacked Digg
