vslira··on Show HN: In a single HTML file, an app to encourage my children to invest
The reasonable interpretation of such a project is not to pump the stock market even higher by getting children to invest their savings into it, but to inculcate the habits of investing over time so they can do it properly as adults.

I'm sure Mr. Rothschild would be fine with this learning tool.

vslira··on SEC approves Texas Stock Exchange, first new US integrated exchange in decades
Probably doesn't ever need to be completed, just in the works as a reminder every time the aforementioned taxes are floated as an idea
vslira··on The biggest sign of an AI bubble is starting to appear – debt
> Calling it a bubble just because the numbers are big is the weakest of financial journalism

Yeah, exactly. The current AI investment wave could be a bubble. Or not. If anyone knows, there are millions to be made in the stock market. The answer depends on the actual expectations for those investments and how actual business metrics are tracking them.

But pointing to ambiguous “evidence” just adds noise. If someone screams fire in a movie theater journalist should report if there’s a fire or at least smoke, not write articles showing concern about how flammable all the furniture is

vslira··on When I say “alphabetical order”, I mean “alphabetical order”
shameless plug (though I don't get a cent out of this, of course): https://blog.vslira.net/2025/03/a-neat-approach-for-sortable...
vslira··on When I say “alphabetical order”, I mean “alphabetical order”
Ha! I had the exact same realization on MacOS. Extremely annoying behavior.
vslira··on ChatControl: EU wants to scan all private messages, even in encrypted apps
> Nobody believes in a free internet anymore.

Civil liberties, like elections and liberal principles in general, are unfortunately only popular when the right side (coincidentally one's own) is winning

vslira··on Magical systems thinking
Any particular resource to recommend?
vslira··on EU court rules nuclear energy is clean energy
I swear I'm not trolling: do you mind asking them about simply dumping it (in leaded concrete barrels etc) in the deep ocean?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_disposal_of_radioactive_... makes it seem not such a big deal

vslira··on Ask HN: Any thoughts on my new online business?
It seems like a great positioning for a software development agency. HN probably leans more technical, so in your place I wouldn't place a lot of weight on feedbacks here (not because people don't know what they're talking about, but because they're not the intended audience) and would try this same post in some non-technically oriented community of vibe coders / solopreneurs / etc.

Good luck on your enterprise.

vslira··on Delphi in the Age of AI
This last week I've been receiving emails from Embarcadero (I can't recall ever registering on their site, but it's possible that I did in the quarter century I've been online) so, together with this post, I suppose management is doing some marketing push.
vslira··on I did 98,000 Anki reviews. Anki is already dead
I use Anki to study all kinds of subjects, and more than half of the value is processing what I learned (usually with pencil and paper) into good anki cards ("atomic", as per Michael Nielsen's definition), including the insights that I had when studying the subject (like "what's the comparison with X that I used to understand Y?")

I'm not sure if it is efficient, mind you, but I suppose it's effective because I can recall information later when relevant, and I believe that like exercising just being able to stick to a study routine ends up being more important than picking the best routine

vslira··on The patterns of elites who conceal their assets offshore
> Yet, elites who come from countries where their assets are likely to be seized due either to a lack of civil rights or a government with effective regulations tend to use a “concealment strategy” to remain anonymous.

Not to be a defender of criminal money laundering, but this is an important caveat. When all money is traceable, digital and controlled, good luck funding anything against the government in an authoritarian setting.

Unfortunately that's a catch-22

I'm well aware of the impact of corruption and organized crime and how it affects billions worldwide, I've read more than one book on the subject. but it's analogous to the issue with cryptography, privacy and protecting people, especially minors, on the internet for example

vslira··on GLP-1s are breaking life insurance
I've always felt that there's some trade to be done here, with life and health insurers basically giving glp-1 et all for free bc they lower the cost of everything else

edit: and then Big Annuity lobbying to oppose this

vslira··on [dead]
Basically any member of a group can unilaterally send all of its text content to a system that understands it in natural language. In light of recent moves all over the world of governments regulating online speech, I'm worried that the gravity pull is in the direction of somehow utilizing these capabilities in ways that might not be aligned with users.

I'm not accusing Meta of planning to do this, by the way: I'm afraid it might be forced to.

vslira··on Social anxiety disorder-associated gut microbiota increases social fear
I’m writing the following in jest, before anyone takes this seriously, as I assume this kind of correlation has been accounted for.

Maybe the causation is reversed: people who go out more are more frequently infected with all kinds of bugs, from getting too intimate with strangers to eating stuff that was prepared by someone not too assiduous in their hand washing - a sibling reply mentioning fecal microbiota transplant comes to mind

I know this article is about bugs that cause anxiety, but maybe they just lose the competition in a gut environment with the social bugs

People who stay at home are less infected, thus the correlation with these gut specimens

vslira··on LLMs are cheap
he's not wrong, if you can run a open weights model in any cloud, you can very straightforwardly estimate the cost of running the model. considering that these providers either use long-term contracts or maybe even buy their own hardware, this theoretical cloud deployment is itself an overestimate of the costs
vslira··on AI Agents: Less Capability, More Reliability, Please
while i'm bullish on AI capabilities, that is not a very optimistic observation for developers building on top of it
vslira··on I Quit Google Search for AI–and I'm Not Going Back
I've been kind of expecting to see the LLM impact on Google's 10-Q for a while now.

Even if LLM queries are just a small fraction of overall internet queries, I suppose they're stealing eyeballs from higher-value searchers.

vslira··on The Collective Ambition Behind Odysseus, a Game-Changing Sci-Fi Larp
This type of consumption, at scale, is what I imagine will be commonplace in a post-white-collar scarcity world
vslira··on The failure of the land value tax
There's a small note referring to Denmark applying an LVT that is "close to theory", and further down a comment that it comprises roughly 2% of total government revenue.

On the linked article, the tax seems to be .5% up to a given value, then 1.5% above that (fairly hefty, imo), but excludes rented properties - which pay tax on the rent.

This danish case study seems to me a better case study for the LVT: why does it raise so little?

vslira··on Switching from Pyenv to Uv
I'm using exclusively uv for personal projects - and small prototypes at work - and I can't recommend it enough.

Uv makes python go from "batteries included" to "attached to a nuclear reactor"

vslira··on Flix's FAQ
Lovely
vslira··on Ensuring Accountability for All Agencies
But capital gains - and business income taxes in a way, given how profit is calculated - do pay an inflationary tax since they're calculated on nominal gains, so I'm not at all convinced that the wealthy don't care about inflation since it erodes their wealth.

This effect can be minimized or neutered if their assets grow in real terms, but that only works in a growing-pie world, too

vslira··on CRT Simulation in a GPU Shader, Looks Better Than Black Frame Insertion
I’m a complete layperson on graphics and such, so please someone help me here: does this mean we’re now able to simulate old video game visuals on crt? That would be the best Christmas gift ever
vslira··on I sensed anxiety and frustration at NeurIPS 24
It's kinda funny, the general dread regarding AI in tech circles is mostly due to fears that all jobs will be automated away, while the concerns expressed by the researchers according to the author are ironically a lot narrower in the sense that they haven't learned the currently cool topic.
vslira··on Show HN: Numscript, a declarative language to model financial transactions
Super interesting and thanks for sharing. If I understood the license page on the repository correctly, the DSL is MIT-licensed since it's not within the enterprise directory, right?
vslira··on They don't make readers like they used to
It's funny that copyright somehow got mixed with the concept of canonicity over time. That a company or a person has the right to oxymoronically define the reality of a fictional universe is a bit crazy when you think about it.

The word "canon" is also an interesting choice for this concept. It references that the church - sticking to the most popular example - "decided" what was canon when christianity was forming, and so can authors about their works. Cynicism aside, I don't think religious leaders understood canonicity as their favored interpretation, but as actual truth, which is obviously not the case with modern media.

vslira··on Tbsp – treesitter-based source processing language
That's a lot of work to write lisp without parentheses /j

I joke, really interesting project, props to the team

vslira··on Founder Mode
I think you’re being too dismissive of a third kind of player that is neither “leader” or “manager”, which is “owners”.

There’s a saying (which I’m sure has an English equivalent) where I live that goes something like “It’s the owner’s gaze which fattens the cow”.

Owner vs manager is the original “AI alignment problem”, usually taught as the principal-agent problem in business schools, and is very real. SV-type founders are, by and large, meaningful owners in their enterprises and thus heavily invested (literally) in the company’s performance. Professional managers, leaders or not, are just selling their labor. There is a whole field of management science about designing proper compensation structures to make CEOs better aligned with shareholders, but you get that quicker by making them the same person.

Of course there’s a whole other world of majority shareholders leveraging their position to extract value from minority shareholders, which is just another version of the same problem.

All this to say, you’re right that there’s prior art about what he’s writing, but its the principal-agent problem, not leaders vs managers, and in general business literature does not equate the issue of founder ownership with the PA-problem (obviously any undergrad can link the two issues, but that’s not how they’re usually approached)

vslira··on In ‘The Book Against Death,’ Elias Canetti rants against mortality
All those in favor of eventually dying are welcome to do so at their own convenience, after a long and fulfilling life.

To the rest of us, the stars, please.
