vr46··on 50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player
Come and join the resurgent Minidisc movement!
vr46··on 50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player
They want the expense without the inconvenience?
vr46··on An ounce of silver is now worth more than a barrel of oil
Funny, I like it. I guess gold has been too expensive for a while.
vr46··on JetBrains cancels Fleet
I left JetBrains in January after a very long time; with the new UI, there was realistically not a lot separating it from VSCode, and it was clear where all the fun was.

I didn’t really want to switch to VSC but the extensions made it easy to find things that you just couldn’t do in IntelliJ, and… I haven’t looked back. Haven’t really missed the suite at all.

vr46··on Homebrew no longer allows bypassing Gatekeeper for unsigned/unnotarized software
I know, is there any point in calling it Homebrew anymore when it's like an extension of the App Store?
vr46··on Four strange places to see London's Roman Wall
I used to eat lunch at Bastion 14, although you can't get anywhere near it now. There was plenty of old wall at Moorgate that was very open access.
vr46··on Show HN: Learn German with Games
Took me to my local grafana instance, which was a surprise :D
vr46··on Immich v2.0.0 – First stable release
An excellent piece of work, although needed and continues to need more horsepower than I have readily available. UI not super-useful but I am going to dig in and see if the API can be utilized to get what I would like - better exposure of underlying file structure to quickly navigate by date.

The only thing tolerant society must not tolerate, is intolerance.

Never debate with Nazis or other bad faith actors.

vr46··on A board member's perspective of the RubyGems controversy
OMFG

This post is full of outright nonsense. I was in Central London last Saturday and watched a lot of it go down, before heading to Islington and then catching the last dregs of the crowd nearer Euston and chatting in the pub with some of them.

As a "native Brit" and "native Londoner" that DHH wouldn't recognise as such, he can absolutely do one.

And Canada, and Australia.
vr46··on Immich – High performance self-hosted photo and video management
Recently installed and it’s chewing through 25 years of digital photos, has been some weeks now and expecting it to take another week.

But - seems great. I was prompted to do this after the death of a friend and the subsequent hunt for photos, so I’m hoping the facial recognition lives up to its billing.

I don’t really like having the NAS on 24/7 but I do like the idea of having that local photo sync. Probably cheaper to start with iCloud given the costs of 20TB drives and energy prices, however.

vr46··on UN report finds UN reports are not widely read
The UN is operating at a different scale doing something quite unique, and the reports don’t need to be widely-read to be important or influential. I ran kitchens at a series of homeless shelters for ten years and the difference between cooking/serving food, and actually procuring supplies and dealing with the supply chain - was the difference between something that took one hour and something that took nine months. It is much like this with the UN and other international trans-governmental organizations, they work with ridiculously complex systems and get real shit done, even if it’s not as visual as handing out a plate of food.
vr46··on UN report finds UN reports are not widely read
Some of it is legitimately journalistic and protecting sources.
vr46··on FaceTime in iOS 26 will freeze your call if someone starts undressing
No one cares about the children/elderly/disabled/etc until they want to argue over something
vr46··on Lorde's new CD is so transparent that stereos can't even read it
What is in there that is supposed to reflect the laser? It a Red Book-compliant CD?

Modern CD players are cut-down versions of older machines. My Naim forgoes de-emphasis as only older CDs from the 14-bit era used it. Surely one would expect full backward support for a medium designed for a greater-than-human lifespan?

vr46··on The No Space for Bezos movement: 'One man rents a city for three days? '
Yes, in a similar vein, London has never really been the same since those bloody Huguenots refugees turned up with all their weaving nonsense.
vr46··on Adobe Project Indigo is a new photo app from former Pixel camera engineers
Indigo is excellent so far, a little bit buggy, but I am seriously impressed. (iPhone 12 Pro)

And I have a Q2, a 5D4 and a 645Z, this little app is really great, and colour me surprised.

vr46··on Gurus of 90s Web Design: Zeldman, Siegel, Nielsen
Do you remember how low screen resolutions were as well?? :D
vr46··on MacInTouch on pause in an attempt to stem the rising costs of bot traffic
As cool as Ric Ford is, and I’ve been following his stuff for DECADES, he hasn’t really gotten a handle on this web stuff anymore. He’s been prevaricating for YEARS about the site and how to run it and what to run it on, it’s been slow and unreliable and he seems to be holding on to a vision of how he would like things to be instead of seeing them as they really are.

Blogs a decade behind him have gone through multiple cycles of success and reinvention while Macintouch is a zombie site, just not getting anywhere.

vr46··on Gurus of 90s Web Design: Zeldman, Siegel, Nielsen
K10k! “Newstoday” - Miss that jingle!

Made a friend on k10k back in, maybe 2001, still friends. Texted her a few days ago. Never met yet.

I remember Shaun Inman, did he do Mint?
vr46··on Gurus of 90s Web Design: Zeldman, Siegel, Nielsen
I enjoyed Zeldman's A List Apart, and had no idea that he was so old at a time that we were all in our mid-twenties, I thought he was our cohort :D

Nielsen I can honestly leave, maybe he did help millions of people have easier to use sites, but I found him rigid and boring; especially rigid with his prescriptive approach to sites - "the home page should have these links". I think Philip Greenspun skewered him at some point.

I understand why a lot of this was like this, as people wanted answers and direction, and were prepared to pay a lot of money for it, and he was a consultant doing consultancy. People have always wanted answers and direction, and will pay for it, but in a rapidly-changing world, the answers have a short shelf-life. Maybe that's why he took his site down a long time ago, aware that his maps were getting very out-of-date.

Still, fun times, what a great age it was.

vr46··on Alan Yentob Has Died
Wow, amazing career, huge influence. Saw Cracked Actor some years ago in the ICA and it had not aged.
vr46··on Wise refuses to let us access our $60k AUD
I’ve had all kinds of little annoying issues with Wise that cause me to be trapped in circles, but nothing this serious. Support is truly the thing that separates the wheat from the chaff. Everything is hunky-dory when it works, and the moment there’s a problem, you’re suddenly stuck in the Barbican at 3am with no signs, no lights and nobody to talk to.
vr46··on The Barbican
I have many memories of barrelling through on skates with friends, and one of my favourite memories is of filming a mate skating through some flaming cones that another friend had made, basically mini molotov cocktails of small bottles filled with paraffin, we set them in a long line outside the church opposite the water and spent an hour skating around and filming ourselves. This was pre-2001, I cannot believe some of the shit we used to do.

Elsewhere in the place, I have loved going to exhibitions, theatre plays, gigs and the cinema. It's a one-stop cultural hub that evokes the glamour of flying in the olden days.

vr46··on Business co-founders in tech startups are less valuable than they think
Jeepers, I worked on two startups where I met a “business” person (first was a finance-type, second was a doctor, and we (I) proceeded to do all the work in gathering requirements, building prototypes, etc etc. In both instances, neither of the “ideas” people had any experience of being in any kind of project, and both wanted to discuss equity way too often. And in the event, neither of them as CEO did a blind bit of work. Classic management-by-walking-around. When I suggested to the second one that we might want to find an actual CEO he went nuts and started raving around how he had done all the work of setting up the company and coming up the idea - reader, there was nothing on paper, he hadn’t written anything down, he just wanted to explain it and have everything magically happen.
vr46··on 'Immediate red flags': questions raised over 'expert' much quoted in UK press
You can definitely include The Telegraph, and certainly The Times as well, I had to cancel my subscription to that, which was only £1 a month, because of their columnists who were SO terrible that I couldn’t face it anymore. These papers are so short of actual journalists now, it seems that only The Cardigan and the FT have people who care about reporting.
vr46··on 'Exploding' Tunnock's teacakes cleared by tests to fly again
Definitely, and never ever a non-alcoholic beer, yet to find one that isn't 99% gas by volume, you'll explode like Mr Creosote
