vph··on Nexus 5
Because he will be happier with the 5.
vph··on Replacing Python
Why is it necessary to replace Python for this project? And what are the objectives for the replacement? It's not clear what the author's problems and objectives are.
vph··on There's a coffeeshop called java.update() in GTA V
I would just name it Java.update() and leave it there. These people are trying too hard. They probably turn off the average geeks (who find it too geeky); and the hard-core geeks just tear them apart with all of the semantic and syntactic errors.
vph··on Fucking Sue Me (2011)
The obvious lesson here is: listen to dad. If you are starting out, have a mentor.
vph··on Elon Musk To Traverse The U.S. Using A Model S In 6 Day Trip
charging electric cars ain't free.
vph··on Reddit has the killer social network feature: anonymity
It's a bit naive to think Facebook doesn't care about people. Broadly speaking, there are introverts and there are extroverts. Introverts love Reddit, 4Chan, etc. for their anonymity. Extroverts love Facebook, Twitter, etc. And those in the middle belong to both.
vph··on Why I left Google
Your "TL;DR" is well deserved.
vph··on Show HN: Create unlimited one-off Invoices (Built with AngularJS)
invoice_sub_total is defined twice.
vph··on I rewrote my blog in Go
I think the comparison is a little misleading as the author admitted that the newer version is slimmer and tighter. Django is heavy. It'd be interesting if somehow the author could have used Bottle (Python) and compare it to Revel (Go).
vph··on Samsung’s newest TV lets viewers watch different HD programs on the same screen
Why? At this day and age, it's hard enough to watch one movie , with a cell phone in hand. Why would you want to watch two movies at the same time? This makes no sense.
vph··on ‘America has no functioning democracy at this moment’ – Jimmy Carter on NSA
With all due respect to Jimmy Carter, and he is a good man at heart, but he appears naive as to what is the true core of the USA. The USA has always been a country of military power. Without military power, the USA would not be what it is today. Even during peace time with the Soviet and others, the underlying military power of the US serves as an important factor to maintain that peace.
vph··on The FuqIt Web Framework
>That's beautiful I think. Yeah I know it hasn't exactly taken off and flask and friends surpassed it but I still like it.

That reason it still hasn't taken off is that Aaron is very like Zed; they are grasshoppers. They get bored easily from doing something.

vph··on The FuqIt Web Framework
I think you can run python modules installed in the system through this framework.
vph··on Edward Snowden Q&A
You don't have to be in direct contact with the Chinese government to provide them information. It is probably the case that spies do not have direct contact with the government they are spying for. He namedropped the Guardian/WashPo. Sure, I can believe that journalists from these papers aint' Chinese spies, but how about the Chinese papers that he talked. Oh, he conveniently did not mention them.
vph··on Edward Snowden Q&A
That is an evasive answer to the question: "The US Government alleged that you gave sensitive information to the Chinese."

Based on his answer, he probably did give sensitive information to the Chinese.

vph··on Choosing Hong Kong Is a Brilliant Move by Edward Snowden
If he is afraid of being charged in the US, I would think he wouldn't have done this in the first place. Initially, it is said he did this because he cared about Americans. But by working with the Chinese, he is no longer a patriot in the eyes of many Americans. Overall, it appears like he was manipulated or at least fueled by the Chinese operatives.
vph··on Choosing Hong Kong Is a Brilliant Move by Edward Snowden
Brilliant move, maybe, unless he was manipulated by the Chinese. It is very interesting that the allegation that the NSA has been hacking into Chinese systems came out at the time when the US and China are meeting and Obama is trying to admonish the Chinese on hacking.

It would be interesting to explore if Edward Snowden has any handler. And how exactly he chose Hong Kong and decided to reveal that the NSA has been hacking the Chinese.

vph··on 42
See the Strong Law of Small Numbers, of which 42 is one.
vph··on LinkedIn: The Creepiest Social Network
I am curious why this is supposedly creepy. I think the main premise of a social network is that you reach out or get reached out to people who might know you or you might know. Now, you have the option of not reaching out to those people, and I think it is fair game that the social network assumes that other members might reach out to you, a member of the network.

If you do not like that aspect of the social network, do not join it.

vph··on There is No Right Way to Develop Software
be careful when you elevate "development" to "engineering". Any self-respecting man can put together a study desk for his son. That's development. But now if you want to build and sell desks to the public in such a way that we have to follow regulations and make a profit. Then that is engineering.
vph··on Ask HN: Which college should I attend?
they all seem to be great schools, with great teachers. I'd choose a place where you'll live on campus and hangout with smart CS majors.
vph··on Create your next conference poster with LaTeX
Typically, people print large posters at places like FedEx Kinko. Converting color posters to B&W ones, although sound trivial conceptually, sometimes poses a practical challenge. One is you don't exactly know how the color posters will look in black and white.
vph··on Create your next conference poster with LaTeX
Good work!!!

Are there black and white poster templates? Color printing of posters is expensive and not necessary in many cases.

vph··on Open access: The true cost of science publishing
Open Access places like PLOS, BMC journals, still cost a sh*t load to publish (~$2000). Michael Eisen and the likes just found a new way to make moneys. If any of these dudes are in the business of science and not making money, they would charge no more than $500 per article.
vph··on Web Framework Benchmarks
This seems to be a nice benchmark. For the Python group, I would suggest two things: (1) include a lightweight framework like Bottle, and (2) Try pypy.
vph··on Email: the easiest way to improve retention
email is just a tool of communication. The keyword is moderation.
vph··on 80 chars per line is great
The problem with 80 chars/line and Python, in particular, is list/dict comprehension. Naturally, as they replace a whole loop, comprehensions pack much information into one line. Consequently, there are many times when a list/dict-comprehension line that are clean and meaningful but had to be broken into 2 lines.

And that isn't nice.

vph··on A Tip That Will Help You Learn To Code 10x Faster
This is not a tip. The author simply reported his natural learning curve. Naturally, you learn a lot at the beginning and later on you don't learn as much. The author went through this process and thought that because he didn't learn much "other things" at the end, he was doing the right thing, and he had made mistakes early on by not focusing only "the thing" he was supposed to learn.

No, he did not make mistakes by digressing into learning things that are related but might not be directly addressing his problems at hand.

Learning is complicated, as things that you learn help you in ways that you might not be even aware of.

vph··on Visual Task Management for Individuals and Teams
Make no mistake, I'm not against real innovations. For example, I've been using git and advocating for it, while many of my peers are still with older CVS systems.

The point is if you masquerade a solution to a non-problem with pretty things, it just wastes everyone's time and energy.

Like I said, it would be interesting if there is a study to find out if any of these pretty task management tools actually increases productivity.

vph··on Visual Task Management for Individuals and Teams
It would be interesting if there is a study that comprehensively measures if these pretty tools actually improves productivity in comparison to using simple text editors.

My guess is they don't. My guess is people might find them fancy and pretty initially but eventually recognize that they don't actually improve efficiency or effectiveness.
