REPLesent looks cool!
vortex_ape··on A terminal-based presentation tool with colors and effects
Yes! `present` is built on asciimatics.
vortex_ape··on A terminal-based presentation tool with colors and effects
That would be awesome! I'll work on it and add it some time! Opened https://github.com/vinayak-mehta/present/issues/45 to track it :D
vortex_ape··on A terminal-based presentation tool with colors and effects
I used https://github.com/phw/peek but I plan on trying asciinema / terminalizer soon.

I was able to record `present` with asciinema, just need to see how nicely it renders into a GIF!

Thanks for pointing me to Shellshow, I hadn't heard of it before, it looks cool! I'll look into it in detail sometime this week and see if I can add some of its features to `present`.

> One thing I want in a tool like this is to be able to display ascii charts like from gnuplot, which is why I liked the simplicity of Shellshow. I will have to dig in to see if this is possible, if not I expect it would be easy to add.

I've thought about adding charting features too! Asciimatics supports barcharts: https://asciimatics.readthedocs.io/en/stable/asciimatics.htm... and lets you extend classes to build other types of charts too.

Would you like to open an issue and describe this feature a bit in detail? https://github.com/vinayak-mehta/present/issues For example, what should the API look like, should it pick up data from a csv file and load it up into a barchart etc. I would love to work on this when I find time!

vortex_ape··on A terminal-based presentation tool with colors and effects
Not currently. A lot of people have requested that feature, I'll look into how that can be done! Tracking it here: https://github.com/vinayak-mehta/present/issues/43

PPS: In case you're interested in speaker notes, I used `present` + tmux + a keylogger + reveal.js speaker notes view for a presentation last week. I posted about it here: https://vinayak.io/2020/08/24/day-11-reveal-keylogger-tmux-p...

Though I want to work on a terminal-based speaker notes view some time! https://github.com/vinayak-mehta/present/issues/5

Thanks again! I loved that presentation! Looking forward to a longer one :D

You can use the matrix effect by adding `<!-- effect=matrix -->` to the top of your slide! :)

These effects are supported right now: fireworks, explosions, stars, matrix, plasma. I plan to add more asciimatics effects soon!

PS: I've been wanting to build this ever since I watched Brandon Rhodes' North Bay Python 2017 keynote! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrMnmLyYjU8

It's a talk about (in Brandon's words) ASCII art animation, software architecture, the mysteries of UNIX terminal settings, and the glories of Plain Text. You should totally check it out!

Hey, author here! Just wanted to add that you can write your slides using Markdown (most of its features are supported).

Also reposting my comment from the asciimatics post that was here yesterday:

I made this on top of asciimatics, which is awesome! I had a lot of fun making this thanks to all the effects asciimatics already has.

I was also able to extend an internal asciimatics class to add a feature for pre-recorded playable code blocks. It lets you play code in your terminal presentation like someone's typing it! You can learn more about it here: https://present.readthedocs.io/en/latest/codio.html

Yes it was fun making it thanks to all the asciimatics effects! I was also able to extend an internal asciimatics class to add a feature for pre-recorded code demos, which lets you _play_ code on a slide, like someone is typing it :D

Asciimatics is awesome! I was able to create this terminal-based presentation tool (with colors and effects) using it: https://github.com/vinayak-mehta/present

vortex_ape··on Ask HN: What is it like to work on software for space exploration?
It could probably be this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQLtAp1Aw48
vortex_ape··on Astronomers watch a black hole's corona disappear, then reappear
Nice introductory TED talk on "How to find black holes" by one of the co-authors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idsj47D719E
vortex_ape··on Firefox add-on that removes the timeline on Twitter
Twitter's black box algorithm creates a timeline of tweets that is optimized for engagement. It is designed to keep you on the site for as long as possible, creating a never-ending stream of information which favors super active users, shows tweets from unknown accounts just because someone you follow liked them, throws unnecessary promotions at you, and the list goes on. Infinitely scrolling on this "curated" feed is a waste of your time.

This add-on is supposed to be an off switch for Twitter's fire hose of a timeline. It removes the timeline and discover / "who to follow" sections on Home, nothing else, so you can still use messages, lists and access notifications if you please.

vortex_ape··on Don't close your MacBook with a cover over the camera
> Why are camera covers not just part of the design?

I feel more and more companies should do this! My ThinkPad T480 has one built-in and I really like the peace of mind.

Since it's open-source and on GitHub, you can go there and raise an issue with this feedback. You can't do that with WhatsApp or other closed-source alternatives.

Personally, I don't feel the UX is "terrible", I can use it to do most of the things that I could do in WhatsApp. My friends and I also tested out the video call feature and found the quality to be the same, if not better.

vortex_ape··on EasyOCR: Ready-to-use OCR with 40 languages
Yeah! And Lens is not the only closed-source OCR solution that works. I've gotten great accuracy using ABBYY and docparser.com in the past. But one needs to pay per page after the free trial ends :(
vortex_ape··on EasyOCR: Ready-to-use OCR with 40 languages
> Honestly I was kind of surprised that good basic OCR isn't a totally solved issue with an ecosystem of fully open-source solutions by now.

Yes! Can anyone comment on why this is the case, since OCR is proclaimed to be a solved problem?

I've always wondered why Google Lens works "out of the box" and shows great accuracy on extracting text from images taken using a phone camera, but open-source OCR software (Tesseract, Ocropy etc.) needs a lot of tweaking to extract text from standard documents with standard fonts, even after heavily pre-processing the images.

PS: Has Google released any paper on Google Lens?

Armin Ronacher also wrote a tool[1] which lets you control this desk with the command line. I wish this desk was available in India!

vortex_ape··on Why you should re-read Paradise Lost (2017)
Thanks for this PDF! I was confused to see the words "Paradife Loft" and thought that it was some issue with the PDF, which is not the case.

TIL that ſ (long s) is an archaic form of the lower case letter s.[1]

vortex_ape··on Practical Python Programming
I was there when he delivered that keynote at PyCon India in October 2019. It was all going casually, but when he tied everything together at the end, it all 'clicked', and everyone in the audience went nuts!

Highly recommend that talk.

vortex_ape··on Drive through cities in the browser while listening to local radio stations
There was a similar website trending here last month, where the videos involved walking (instead of driving). Does anyone remember it / can anyone point me to it?

Unrelated: How do you search for old HN posts when you can't think of exact keywords?

vortex_ape··on Drive through cities in the browser while listening to local radio stations
Lol with all the traffic?
vortex_ape··on Ask HN: Board Games Online?
My friends and I have been playing board games (Coup, 7 Wonders, Stone Age) on boardgamearena.com. It has a nice interface, and looks like there's a lot of other board games too. But to play these games, one person in the group needs to have a premium account.
