Someone explain to me how this works?

Big Tech acquires companies founded and run by literal foreign spies and recruits said agents into critical positions with their departments. Meanwhile their alumni buddies down the street over at proscribed companies like NSO and Candiru hack into the products and services of these very same companies and use it to target citizens (including journalists, activists, politicians, diplomats) of America and its allies? And no one thinks there is a conflict of interest or threat to national security here?

>Herzl’s zionism is simply a belief that Jewish people should buy land and live in their ancestral homeland.

Right...

"We shall try to spirit the penniless [Arab] population across the border by procuring employment for it in the transit countries, while denying it any employment in our country ... The removal of the poor must be carried out discreetly and circumspectly." - diaryentry from Herzl's diary 1895

> He wasn’t orthodox, didn’t believe God promised anything to anyone

Back then, most of the Orthodox were anti-zionists.

I dont know why you brought up Herzl anyway, since he died in 1905 and was not as representative of the modern state of Israel as compared to its other founders like David Ben-Gurion, David Ben-Gurion, and Yitzhak Shamir.

We have video footage of Israeli soldiers sniping a 12-year old boy setting off fireworks near the west-bank wall. To those asking "How do we know if it was IDF that shot the boy" there is video footage of Israeli security minister congratulating and praisingthe shooter. [1]

We have video footage of IDF raping prisoners[2] and we have footage of one of the rapists being treated like a celebrity and getting standing ovations on Israeli national tv [3][4].

If i had to list all the video footage just from the last 18 months alone, i would be here all day and it would likely ruin your day. If anyone has still not woken up to the reality of what Israel is, its not for lack of video footage.

The incident had already garnered international attention since it involved workers of multiple international agencies. The footage was in the hands of the International Red Cross and the and the UN and was about to be presented at the UN council. There was no way to cover it up at this point. All that remains was about who gets the scoop, salvaging whatever credibility that remains while controlling the narrative.
volleyball··on Video footage appears to contradict Israeli account of Gaza medic killings
Just to summarize and being conservative with interpretation of events :

  - On 23 March, IDF ambushes a convoy of 5 ambulances, a fire truck and a UN vehicle responding to a distress call.
  - 15 paramedics and aid workers are massacred. There is 1 survivor.
  - Israel buries the bodies in shallow graves along with ambulances and the the fire truck and bulldoze over the site. This is picked up by satellite imagery.
  - Israel blocks access to the area and refuses to cooperate with agencies trying to find & recover the bodies.
  - The IDF and Israeli foreign minister claims that the vehicles were "advancing suspiciously toward IDF troops without headlights or emergency signals" and it eliminated "a hamas military terrorist ... who took part in the October 7 attack" and "eight other terrorists" from Hamas and PIJ .
  - Lone survivor gives own account contradicting Israeli's version of events.
  - The mass grave and bodies are uncovered on 30th March. A smartphone with the relevant footage is found among the remains.
  - Smartphone footage recovered repudiates all of Israel claims and corroborates the survivor's account. That the emergency vehicles had their emergency lights and headlights on, many of the workers were wearing high-viz jackets. No weapons, or terrorists or IDF in sight.
  - None of the names of the victims match the names of the "terrorists" given by Israel. The "hamas October 7 terrorist" is also not among the bodies.
- Israel "admits" it "made a mistake" and is "investigating".

Looking at the headlines and articles, I have to say that the BBC and the western media outlets did a better job burying the lede than Israel did, burying the bodies.

volleyball··on 'Trump Gaza' AI video intended as political satire, says creator
What is happening in Gaza is a ethnic-cleansing and genocide. There is long chain of evidence from the words of of its highest-ranking civilian and military leaders all the way to mid-level commanders, rank-and-file and corroborated by evidence from the ground and ample video evidence and testimony. Trump literally called for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza before posting this video.

The point of my original admittedly flippant post was - If it is okay to satirize the tremendous tragedy currently ongoing in Gaza, is it not okay to make a similar satire about a tragedy that took place 80 years ago? How would the world react. How would hollywood react? How would Solo Avital react ? From a cursory look, It seems he has worked with a few prominent names like Sarah Silverman, Lewis Black in hollywood. Is he going to be black-balled, cancelled by Hollywood for mocking the suffering and planned ethnic-cleansing of 2 million palestinians.

volleyball··on 'Trump Gaza' AI video intended as political satire, says creator
The majority of Gaza's residents are 'temporary' refugees from the Nakba[1] in 1948. Trump and Netanyahu have also cleared any lingering doubt in their mind about being able to come back if they ever leave. Trump literally said that they won't come back. And Israel and its allies are working hard to dismantle UNRWA which tracks the refugees status of 6 million displaced palestinians. All this is part of Israel's three-pronged strategy of ethnic-cleansing, genocide, and apartheid.

The leaders of Egypt, Jordan and people of Gaza know better than to fall for such an obvious ruse. Anyone arguing otherwise is clearly ignorant or speaking in bad faith.

volleyball··on Israel, Hamas reach ceasefire deal to end 15 months of war in Gaza
>We have absolutely zero credible evidence of tens of thousands of child deaths

We have absolutely tons of credible evidence in fact. In September, The Gaza health ministry published names and details of 34,344 identified dead ( the remaining 7,613 that made the official death toll were unidentified). Of these 11,355 are children below the age of 18. : https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/sep/17/gaza-publishes...

Gaza Health Ministry figures have been generally found to be reliable by international agencies, western governments and journalists from years of experience in previous conflicts and corroborate their own independent investigations and reports. Israel will also have full records of most of these people given that they issue ID cards to Gaza.

Indeed, Studies like the recent one published in Lacet suggest that the actual “traumatic injury deaths” might be closer to double the official ministry figures : https://edition.cnn.com/2025/01/09/middleeast/gaza-death-tol...

I haven't mentioned the thousands of missing buried under rubble or dismembered into multiple pieces or eaten by stray dogs. Or deaths due to starvation and disease (due to Israeli blockade of water and food) and excesss deaths due to denial of access to medical care (again due to the blockade of medicines and due to Israel's deliberate targeting of every hospital in Gaza).

I have yet to read a credible report that doesn't also mention the very high proportion of children (and women and elderly) in the casualty figures.

volleyball··on Israel, Hamas reach ceasefire deal to end 15 months of war in Gaza
>Hamas was offered a ceasefire under exactly the same terms in May, and refused it.

This is complete opposite of actual facts which is often the case with Israeli apologia. Hamas wanted a permanent ceasefire and full withdrawal from Gaza. Israel wants a temporary ceasefire - which if one comprehends english - is not actually a ceasefire at all. Quoting Netanyahu (in June) : “Israel’s conditions for ending the war have not changed: the destruction of Hamas’s military and governing capabilities, the freeing of all hostages and ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel,” which translates to "Return the hostages and we will kill you all at a time of our choosing". Even then Netanyahu never had any intention of pursuing a ceasefire deal to completion at the time because his cabinet members publicly threatened to withdraw from his coalition and collapse the government which would likely lead to Netanyahu's impending trial and incarceration.

volleyball··on Hitler dismantled a democracy in 53 days through constitutional means
> what about the first tweet (thread) do you think is wrong?

Addressing all the issues i have with that thread would require a post longer than that.

For now, i will focus on one :

> The reaction by Israel now will be exactly what ANY NATION ON EARTH would do in like circumstances (and Hamas knows this). When you look at what this leads to in reaction go tell your people then "well at least we killed some of them too". It's sick. And counterproductive

Like Israel has no choice but to massacre 100,000 civillians (the 50k official figure is in all likelihood a steep undercount), rape palestinian prisoners (as a matter of prison policy), massacre more children than in any other conflict this century , demolish every hospital, college and university in the gaza-strip, starve the entire population in to submission, drop 2000-pound warheads on residential buildings, densely packed neighbourhoods and refugee camps (For comparison the FAB-3000s the Russians have been using lately to devastate Ukrainian front-lines contain 1500-pound warheads). This according to Dan is something that 'ANY NATION ON EARTH' would do under similar circumstances. I know he didn't have the benefit of hindsight but it is not the kind of assertion that is to be expected from a student and teacher of history or anyone who knows anything about Israeli conduct.. Indeed Dan is pre-emptively justifying and rationalizing Israel's brutal calculus - "We must kill 100x Palestinians in retaliation to Hamas's atrocities as a deterrence"

>what Hamas did will make things worse for Palestinians.

For the 2 million Palestinians today in Gaza? Undoubtedly. For the 3 million or so Palestinians in the West Bank? They were already living under progressively worsening conditions before October 7, what with ever-increasing persecution and brutalization by the IDF, forced evictions and demolitions, settlement expansion, suffocation by IDF security cordons, checkpoints, outposts and increasing attacks by emboldened settlers. Things were already coming to a head with Israeli provocations and aggressions not limited to incursions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque and increasing calls for its destruction by Israeli extemists including members of Netanyahu's cabinet. (That is one of the key events leading up to October 7 and it is the kind of context you would expect a historian to give). What about the 5 million or so Palestinian refugees living in camps in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon and registered under UNRWA (which Israel and its allies are working so hard to dismantle ) plus the Palestinians in Israel and the wider diaspora? That remains to be seen. As low as their expectations are of realizing their dream of a Palestinian state, it is still higher than what it was on October 6. Even Dan admits putting millions of people to live in perpetual state of oppression and humiliation was not a sustainable strategy. And Israel and its backers did not leave any other levers for the Palestinians to use to make themselves heard.

>I'll also note that I think this is an especially terrible way to pick people to listen to. "Forget what other people say, let's see if they agree with my political ideas about a complicated situation. Oh, they don't? I'll ignore them" is a recipe for never learning or growing in your beliefs.

You are right about this in general and as it pertains to politcal commentary, but this is supposed to be a history podcast where the listener is often uninformed and impressionable. Good historians should treat the subject with an unbiased perspective and give a fair and balanced accounting of events. Otherwise its not history but a form of propaganda.

volleyball··on Hitler dismantled a democracy in 53 days through constitutional means
The name 'hardcore history' keeps popping up now and again so I decided to do a quick Gell-man-amensia check on a topic i am somewhat familiar with it.

It seems he hasn't tackled Israel/Palestine on his podcast but so i had to make do with whatever tweets i could find :

https://xcancel.com/HardcoreHistory/status/17121572074864849...

His few tweets and replies are pro-israeli apologia (whose facade has become thinner and indefensible in the past year) with zero incorporation of the palestinian side and glaring misrepresentation and omission of facts. I am sorry but i can't trust him to speak honestly and fairly on the other parts of history i am unfamiliar with.

volleyball··on Journalist casualties in the Israel-Gaza war
You have gotten it backwards.

Israel has had a long-standing policy of propping up Hamas in order to divide Palestinians and thwart the creation of a Palestinian state. Here's an actual quote from Netanyahu on this from 2019 :

“Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas … This is part of our strategy – to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the West Bank.”

volleyball··on Journalist casualties in the Israel-Gaza war
A rather maximalist position given Israel's mandatory conscription. But points for uniform application of rules, i guess.
volleyball··on Journalist casualties in the Israel-Gaza war
I remember 10k being the more frequently quoted number. But maybe that needs to be revisited - I was more naive about the degree of underreporting on ukrainian casualties. Maybe the truth is closer to 25k - which would make it comparable to Gaza. It will be difficult/impossible to know the real number given the reported cremations, the fact that the city is under Russian control, and that lot of the missing include residents who fled/were-transferred to Russia. The Gaza numbers are likely higher than official report given all the missing who are still under the rubble.
volleyball··on Journalist casualties in the Israel-Gaza war
Majority of Israelis civillians (>50%) killed on October 7th were reservists. Do you classify them as "not really civillians"?
volleyball··on Journalist casualties in the Israel-Gaza war
GP is wrong. There is the law of proportionality in the Geneva Conventions which requires "that the expected incidental harm is not excessive in relation to the anticipated military advantage."

>The word to pay attention to here is "military advantage" - i.e. "military value" of the target. Seeing a "hamas" go into a hospital or a rocket being fired from it doesn't give Israel the green light to bomb it. While there is no well-defined metric or number that defines proportionality - it is safe to say that Israelis don't meet the necessary criteria by any reasonable measure. Establishing the necessary proportionality to justify an attack on a hospital, refugee camp or shelter is needless to say, extraordinarily high.

Take the recent ICC arrest warrants as an example. The ICC just ruled that Russian targeting of Ukraine's power grid constituted a war crime.“During this timeframe, there was an alleged campaign of strikes against numerous electric power plants and sub-stations, which were carried out by the Russian armed forces in multiple locations in Ukraine,” the court said. "The ICC said the attacks led by Koblylash and Sokolov on Ukraine’s electrical grid caused civilian harm which was excessive when compared with any expected military advantage". This even though power infrastructure has clear military value.

Now look at the siege and attack on Shifa hospital. If Shifa was a vital command-and-control hub where the head of Hamas operated from , or if it contained a major ammo depot - that may constitute sufficient military value to justify the incidental deaths caused by attacking a hospital. A calendar and a couple of AKs behind an MRI machine doesn't does not. Moreover the fact that Israelis had to go in and spend weeks on a fishing expedition to dig up (or make up) the sufficient evidence to justify the attack after-the-fact, proves that they didn't have the necessary justification to stage the attack in the first place. Thus the attack on the hospital violates the Geneva conventions and is a war crime. (But don't hold your breath for any action from the ICC - They are extremely biased and beholden to US and NATO interests).

At this point the mountain of evidence is simply undeniable. When we compare the intensity of atrocity committed by the Israelis, to those in other recent conflicts - Mosul, Homs, Mariupol, Grozny, Yemen- the israelis sails past them all with a healthy margin. Israelis killed more children in a few months than the syrians, russians did over many years. In terms of civillian/combatant ratio and the sheer intensity of civillian deaths in a short time-frame- I am not aware of any national force committing similar attrocity in the 21st century (Maybe the Ethiopian civil war, but I don't know, i am not versed on that conflict) If this was Russia or Iran we wouldn't be having this conversation.

volleyball··on Osama Bin Laden's 'Letter to America' Goes Viral 21 Years Later – On TikTok
A strange nit to pick but even then your details are wrong.

1896 - Herzl's pamphlet to Rotschilds[1] calling for an Israeli state in either Palestine or Argentina

1897 - First Zionist Congress calling for establishing a Jewish state in Palestine

1917 - British sign Balfour declaration in a letter to Rotschild promising a jewish state in Palestine [2]

1918 - British defeat ottomans and drive them out of the Levant with help of Arab partisans promising them an Arab State. The arabs were betrayed.[3]

So barely 20 years between First Pamplet and Congress and the Balfour declaration. Also note that British had already promised Palestine to the Jews before it even came to their possession.

I would add that in 1914 the population was 94% arab. By 1948 after the British flooded in Jewish migrants mainly from Europe and the Americas, the population became about ~65% + arab and 35+ Jewish. And the just-formed UN (mostly controlled by Western countries and their friends) handed over 60% of the land to the Jews with Palestine split into 2.

So for all intents and purposes "British handed over Palestine to Israel" seems to be an accurate summary.
