voidUpdate··on I Got Banned for Helping Trans People
And their advice for these people who are supposedly mentally ill? Not "go to a specialist doctor and take their advice", but "just don't be". It's almost like they don't actually want to help people
voidUpdate··on [dead]
How is trying to "fix" trans people the same as "helping" them? If I try to "fix" a Christian by convincing them they aren't a Christian, that's not "helping" them...

Also, if God wants us to not change anything that He has made, why hasn't He made a bread tree, or a wine crop? We take wheat from the fields and grapes from the vine, and make them into something that suits us better, and are encouraged to eat bread and drink wine as part of the worship of God. Transgender people change themselves into something that suits them better, why is it suddenly bad if they do it?

voidUpdate··on ICE Collected Nearly 1M People's DNA Last Year–Including Young Children
> "Only slightly more though"

Generally, we've seen that that was bad and I would hope that we wouldn't do it again. I did also say that I don't think it would actually work out because governments, in my original comment

I think you're thinking of genetic genealogy, where some of those DNA testing providers (like 23andme) submit their records to law enforcement, and they can see something like "this DNA sample is likely to be a brother of this existing sample", and can narrow down investigations based on that
voidUpdate··on ICE Collected Nearly 1M People's DNA Last Year–Including Young Children
People don't have to be 100% for it to work, the system would have to be so that if a human was to be evil, then they couldn't compromise it single handed-ly. I'll admit, I've not figured out implementation details, I just like thinking about nice things
voidUpdate··on ICE Collected Nearly 1M People's DNA Last Year–Including Young Children
I think that's a bit safer, because you could deduce very private information from a DNA sample, but you can't really tell anything about a person from their fingerprints, except maybe the size of their fingers. It's a one way match
voidUpdate··on ICE Collected Nearly 1M People's DNA Last Year–Including Young Children
According to wikipedia, "the theoretical risk of a coincidental match is 1 in 100 billion (100,000,000,000) although the practical risk is actually 1 in 1,000 because monozygotic twins are 0.2% of the human population", so it looks like some twins will cause an issue for DNA-based convictions, but I think a non-twin sibling is probably diverse enough? I have different eye colour, ears, food intolerances to my brothers, so I feel like our DNA is pretty different ("pretty" on a scale of human to human comparisons, since 99.9% of DNA is identical between humans or something like that).

I'd argue that while a DNA match could be a very good starting point for a conviction, other evidence should also be presented, for the reasons you suggest. For example, there is the case of the Phantom of Heillbron (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_of_Heilbronn), where European police found DNA evidence of a woman being at many diverse crime scenes, but it turned out the cotton swabs used for testing were contaminated by at worker at the factory (The swabs weren't certified for police work)

voidUpdate··on Ask HN: How do you call the "-" on a keyboard?
Wouldn't it be "-"()?
voidUpdate··on ICE Collected Nearly 1M People's DNA Last Year–Including Young Children
It's generally quite hard to get a DNA sample from someone's PGP signature
voidUpdate··on Why Is the U.S. Running So Low on Weapons?
Because they've used up all their complicated, expensive weapons obliterating middle eastern children
voidUpdate··on ICE Collected Nearly 1M People's DNA Last Year–Including Young Children
Slightly biased because I'm a european, but I think a european country is more likely to be trust-able with a country-wide DNA database. Only slightly more though, I still wouldn't trust them to actually do it right
voidUpdate··on ICE Collected Nearly 1M People's DNA Last Year–Including Young Children
IF there was a secure and trustable way that a trusted government could retain DNA information, then I feel like people having a DNA test at birth or on becoming a citizen could be useful, both medically ("your sample indicates you may have a higher risk of dementia") and from a policing standpoint ("we found DNA on this woman's clothes and immediately matched it to this man who hasn't committed a crime before" or "we were able to identify this john doe because their DNA was on record"). However, given that companies and governments are awful, I don't think it could ever actually work in practice :/
voidUpdate··on Ask HN: How do you call the "-" on a keyboard?
"Hyphen" in writing, "dash" or "tack" in command line
voidUpdate··on Prevent cognitive debt by manually retyping LLM-generated code
Depends what they're doing... I can crack out a basic UI in a few hours at my job, and I don't use LLMs at all, and I wouldn't class myself as an expert developer or anything
voidUpdate··on Show HN: I created a project management system
Why include unsplash stock photos for your testimonials? What are they adding? And what makes https://unsplash.com/photos/man-wearing-white-v-neck-shirt-i... a CTO/VP Engineering and https://unsplash.com/photos/a-man-wearing-glasses-and-a-gree... a startup founder? If they were actual photos of the people in those roles, it would make a little more sense, but it's just random photos. You could replace them with cat photos and make the same point

Yes, but the comment was about IQ, not absolute intelligence. The median intelligence is, by definition, 100 IQ, so the median IQ cannot be decreasing

IQ is calibrated so that the average IQ is 100. If the average IQ is going down, something has gone very wrong somewhere
voidUpdate··on Kill The Cookie Banner
Well if the conclusion is "3% of people want to be tracked online", I'd expect the question to be "do you want to be tracked online" or similar, not "do you want to receive personalised ads"?
voidUpdate··on Kill The Cookie Banner
> "around 3% actually want to be tracked online"

3% of people want to be tracked online? I think it's more likely that 3% of people misunderstood the survey question

voidUpdate··on Original Apollo 11 Guidance Computer source code for command and lunar modules
The DSKY was the main input system for the AGC, and commands were inputted using the verb/noun system. Verb says what you want to do, and Noun says what you want to do that verb to.

For example, "Verb 35 Enter" lights every single segment and light on the DSKY, to make sure they're all working. "Verb 16 Noun 17 Enter" displays the IMU measurements, "Verb 16 Noun 36 Enter" displays the current time and "Verb 16 Noun 43 Enter" displays the current GPS lat/long. Verb 16 indicates to display something as decimal, and the noun indicates what to display.

Other commands could be used to input data, or set what program the AGC was running, for example if you wanted to change the current running program to 67, that would be "Verb 37 Enter 67 Enter"
