voidUpdate··on Tim Cook Sold Out Steve Jobs (2025)
> "just one generation after IBM had sold its mainframe computers to the Nazis, when that company provided the numbers that would be inked onto the wrists of the prisoners held in concentration camps"

IBM was selling mainframe computers before 1945? That's impressive, since ENIAC, the supposed first general purpose computer, was invented in that year

voidUpdate··on Ethical AI that respects privacy and the planet
What training data was used for this "ethical AI"?
voidUpdate··on I think the military commissary's freezers were hacked
I would agree, but the freezers going into high heat defrost mode seems like an intentional action from someone, whether that be incompetence or malice on the side of DeCA, or malice from a third party. If they got rid of the people commanding the freezers what to do, I feel like they'd just stay on whatever mode they were already on, rather than suddenly command all the freezers to defrost

Yes
voidUpdate··on The ISBN was invented in 1970. Your books don't care
There should be a "falsehoods programmers believe about books"

voidUpdate··on That's a Lot of YAML
TOML? It's what I've been using for complex configuration in personal projects (more complex than command line switches)
voidUpdate··on Zohran and the Short Link
It could end up having positive effects on the population which could help with income for the city. I'm not an economist, but it seems possible to me

I mean, as far as I'm aware, "socialism" just means that the means of production are owned socially, instead of privately. But is there anything that he's actually done that is disagreeable, or is it just that many news outlets are saying "socialism = bad, Mamdani is socialist, therefore Mamdani = bad"?
voidUpdate··on Show HN: I made a Raspberry with Qwen my local car AI
So you ignore the google plagiarism machine and scroll down to find actual results
voidUpdate··on To tell if a maze is solvable, just hang it by its corners
Only works if the path goes from one side to another. If it ends in the center, it will be solvable but only be a single piece. It can also fall into multiple pieces without being solvable if there is a disconnected piece of wall
voidUpdate··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
I'm not sure what hand position you're using, but on the keyboard I'm at right now, I put my left little finger on control, and use my left index finger for the c/v. Do you mean that you're using your thumb for control and index for c/v?

We didn't start the fire!

voidUpdate··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
> "But it's a machine tool and you should be able to modify and improve it"

I've slightly modified mine to work better for my needs. 3d printed poop bucket, separate external filament holder, and while I haven't done it myself, there's a company making an automatic bed changer for the a1 mini so you can do multiple prints without supervision

Genuine question, what is it you don't like about Mamdani? I don't live in NYC, so I don't have first-hand experience with him, but I've not seen many complaints about him (other than things like "he broke the dress code at the swimming pool that one time", which is "Obama's tan suit" levels of petty)
voidUpdate··on Laion Big Video Dataset
Does that apply to everyone who doesn't live in the EU as well? And what happens when a major AI company uses this dataset as training data, ignoring consent as usual?
voidUpdate··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO

voidUpdate··on Laion Big Video Dataset
Damn, that's a lot of videos for them to contact the creators and ask for permission to use their content as machine learning training content. Unless of course, they didn't, and just went ahead with it anyway...
voidUpdate··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Wordpress, I believe
voidUpdate··on Show HN: I made a Raspberry with Qwen my local car AI
People don't want to ask google, they just want to ask their plagiarism machine instead and be fed some answers directly, correctness be damned
voidUpdate··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
My mum used to blog on her own website daily, and she's not tech savvy at all
voidUpdate··on Show HN: I built a SaaS without knowing how to code – am I an idiot?
Suppose your LLM provider goes down. How do you fix bugs now?
voidUpdate··on A website for debloated open source alternatives
Bitdefender blocked it for being malware apparently
voidUpdate··on Why Microsoft Entertainment Pack had a sticker announcing that it had Tetris?
using a different browser works fine too (tried edge after chrome)
voidUpdate··on Why Microsoft Entertainment Pack had a sticker announcing that it had Tetris?
Apparently jwz doesn't like HN, if you click that link you just get an image of a testicle in an eggcup
voidUpdate··on Geolocating a random island using geometry and CUDA programming
It does if you google the make and model to find out the lens parameters (assuming it isn't a fancy camera with interchangeable lenses)
voidUpdate··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
I've recently had to add a notifications system for an app I manage for a client. The client requested it, and I work as part of a larger company, so I couldn't exactly say no, but I felt pretty icky doing it
voidUpdate··on Geolocating a random island using geometry and CUDA programming
If you know the camera make and model, you might be able to get lens parameters and get better estimates of real world geometry from the image
voidUpdate··on Where Human Sleep Went Wrong
I mean I can vary from 9 to 3 hours of sleep a night, and I can tell you I'd rather get 9 than 3. Just because I'm meant to get 8 hours a night doesn't mean I do
