void-star··on NYC Telecom Raid: What's Up with Those Weird SIM Banks?
Just want to say: Thanks! I was waiting for this article.

Thanks to Ernie Smith, to tedium.co, to HN, to community.

This is the kind of curious and intelligent response to FUD that I want to find whenever major news outlets start an insane new spin-cycle (as increasingly is the way of things in the world).

I’ll let the HN comment thread spin out (as it must), but amidst that, I just want to say that this right here is the reason I still keep coming back to this place and read all of it. So, thanks!

Great post/read!

void-star··on Show HN: A store that generates products from anything you type in search
The product reviews are pretty great sometimes. (I didn’t devise this one, just browsed into it)

Sprocket Verified Buyer 6/24/2025 Utterly revolutionary; performs better than a whisk, truly remarkable

BartholomewP Verified Buyer 3/25/2025 Utterly indispensable during board meetings; would repurchase immediately!

void-star··on Fartscroll-Lid: An app that plays fart sounds when opening or closing a MacBook
Fart noise apps were the first iPhone killer app for a good long stretch in the early days, dominating the app leaderboards for at least half a year.

Yep… Humanity is… let’s face it, pretty stupid.

I, for one welcome, the latest bubble. And, with it, our new, venerable AI overlords!

void-star··on Coinbase CEO explains why he fired engineers who didn't try AI immediately
This is really, well... douchey. Emptying anything I have in Coinbase asap (and yes I read the whole thing)

I wonder how likely it is for CEO roles to get taken over by a sophisticated LLM at this point. I’d wager we’d see a 20x increase in value. I use and value llms in my coding and research workflows already but to fire people for careful and slow adoption speaks very poorly to individual and company maturity.

void-star··on Andrew Ng: Building Faster with AI [video]
Yes this! The observation that being specific versus general in the problems you want to solve is a better start-up plan is true for all startups ever, not just ones that use LLMs to solve them. Anecdotal/personal startup experiences support this strongly and I read enough on here to know that I am not alone…
void-star··on Andrew Ng: Building Faster with AI [video]
Really valid points. I agree with the bits about “expertise in getting the computer to do what you want” being the way of the future, but he also raises really valid points about people having strong domain knowledge (a la his colleague with extensive art history knowledge being better at midjourney than him) after saying it’s okay to tell people to just let the LLM write code for you and learn to code that way. I am having a hard time with the contradictions, maybe it’s me. Not meaning to rag on Dr. Ng, just further the conversation. (Which is super interesting to me.)

EDIT: rereading and realizing I think what resonates most is we are in agreement about the antithetical aspects of the talk. I think this is the crux of the issue.

void-star··on Remote MCP Support in Claude Code
Right??? Anthropic in particular seems to have directly cribbed from Kurt Vonnegut… and then, made it brown?

void-star··on On Not Carrying a Camera – Cultivating memories instead of snapshots
Sketchbook. And pencil… or watercolor… or whatever you can get your hands on. It’s true a picture lasts longer. The memory of the place and experience of creating the image with your own hands does too.
void-star··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting Statement Regarding Executive Order
There have been loads of others but here is a prominent and slightly ironic example of what you are asking about: Tucker Carlson built his early TV career in large part as a conservative pundit on PBS.
void-star··on I have 2000 old VHS tapes in my garage and don't know what to do with them
> We might be the last generation in living memory, for a while at least, who could ever say "you had to be there" and mean it.

Can you explain what causes you to say that we will be the last generation to say this? Not rhetorical, although this caused me to question it because I think that this is probably a constant wrt generations passing onto the next and unlikely to change.

void-star··on US consumer spending dashboard built on data from 50M+ cards now on Snowflake
This begs the question: where is the button I can press to see if my personal data is included and a quick and easy way to inform you to remove it from your service?
void-star··on Copying Is Not Theft [video]
I’m not sure whether to call what we have now “nuanced” or whether it isn’t a result of that movement having mostly lost the fight some decade plus, though. Tried using a public library recently?
void-star··on Testing if a port can be reached, using built-in tools other than ol' telnet
Your concern about not wanting to send bytes is totally valid.

As it happens (if memory serves) telnet can send some bytes on connection also, in attempting to negotiate terminal settings with the remote “telnet server”. That said the /dev/tcp trick is indeed great for bash though!

void-star··on Ask HN: What's your favorite illustration in computer science?
Thanks I had a hard time finding the original at all. I do remember it was specifically the one with the blue background in my case, though. Probably not “better” or even as accurate but it’s the one that really stuck out in my mind.
void-star··on Ask HN: What's your favorite illustration in computer science?
I worked at several companies that had this poster hanging on the wall back in the day and spent a lot of time staring at it while on the phone. It comes immediately to mind.

void-star··on US Government demands direct police access to European biometric data [pdf]
What’s wrong with the existing signal? This is not a sarcastic question. I’m actually curious what the privacy concern over signal is and what is meant by “the facebookified version” and what the privacy concern therein is. The new “stories” functionality I’m guessing? I haven’t used it so I’m interested what observations there are there…
void-star··on VSCode remote code execution advisory
This is pretty standard, timeline-wise, for most responsible disclosure policies. As-in : Give the vendor ample time to publish and deploy a fix before reporting vulnerability specifics.

Aside: As usual, excellent work from Google project-zero

void-star··on An elegy for GNU and RMS
Good luck not interacting with GNU professionally in this day and age. Snark aside, I’d be interested in how that turns out.
void-star··on An elegy for GNU and RMS
RMS has been right about so much and continues to be proven right again and again. And he has written and maintained so much software that is the bedrock of the modern internet. I’m bewildered by the prevalent anti-RMS sentiment I see so frequently on “hacker” news. Is he opinionated? Definitely. Vocal and perhaps even forceful about asserting his opinions? Yep! But guess what, this is _his_ software and FSF vision we collectively decided to build so much on top of over the last several decades. He gets to call the shots until he really does step down and until then, we’ll, that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. Lets stop talking about him like he’s an infirm wingnut who’s past his expiration date now. His message and position has stayed the same since day one and frankly I think more of the people that depend on his work should revere and respect that a bit more instead of the relentless attitude of entitlement he seems to meet so often. There’s a crowd that has complained and continues to do so wrt Linus and it’s just as bad of a look imo.
void-star··on Mudge's redacted Twitter whistleblower disclosure [pdf]
I know Peter Zatko (mudge) professionaly (having spoken at computer security conferences and worked at more than one company that also worked with him), and personally (to an extent, hung out and talked at aforementioned security conferences, talked on irc And email in the good old days of #hack and bugtraq, and have several friends in common, was extremely impressed talking to him about how to disclose a bug I and the l0pht had independently discovered back in the day), and reputationally (the guy demanded, rightfully, a ton of respect amongst peers back then and now). I have a very hard time with this characterization.
void-star··on Heightened dream recall ability linked to increased creativity, connectivity
I have strong personal anecdotal evidence that dreaming and creativity are interconnected. I began dream journaling a few years back, recording descriptions of my dreams along with sketches and drawings. These sketches and notes often led to inspiration in my painting and drawing practice. Doing this also actually increased the lucidity and frequency of memorable dreams I was having in a kind of feedback loop. I have talked about this with other people who have tried dream journaling and it seems to be a common phenomenon.
void-star··on Ursula Le Guin Books
I would agree with that, however in the context of understanding Ursula Le Guin and her writing I stand by my call out to this translation specifically.
void-star··on Ursula Le Guin Books
I recently discovered her translation of the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. It’s become one of my favorite books to open and read a random page from and meditate on. In it I think she also really shows the roots of her philosophy that she expressed throughout all of her writing. The original writing is ofcourse Lao Tzu but the voice in the translation is very much Ursula’s. I’d highly recommend it for fans of any of her writing, regardless of genre.
void-star··on Survival Capsule
For anyone not already familiar with this, do yourself a favor and at least search up some visuals on the “Survivaball”. I love love the Yes Men!!!
void-star··on Parable of the Butler: A science-fiction pioneer finds posthumous fame
I too hadn’t read any of her stuff but I had not heard of her until just a few years ago. After reading the parables and kindred I am a bit dumbfounded I hadn’t heard of her before. Her genre is the stuff I have thrived on since I was a teen. I’m honestly a little pissed (maybe partly at myself) since the reason probably has a lot to do with her skin color and gender. Anyway I’d highly recommend the parables as a starting point. They seem especially prescient today and were a great read.
void-star··on Venture Capitalists Are Deforming Capitalism
I agree this is not how capitalism is supposed to work in the spirit of the version that many democratized nations were sold. But I also agree with another downvoted post, in that this has become the expected behavior. I guess the point is that VC didn’t start this fire, it’s just the latest incarnation of what seems to be the endgame of capitalism. Proponents of capitalism sell a version of it where innovation and efficiency are rewarded through a kind of economic Darwinism where the fittest survive. But it isn’t hard to find examples that show it is capital itself that drives success and allows the unhealthy and unfit to prosper at the expense of superior competitors or even entirely alternative industries.
void-star··on How SSH Port Became 22
My memory may be flawed here but I vaguely remember there being a minor controversy over SSH being awarded port 22 instead of a competing protocol/program called “stelnet”. It was a similar solution to SSH but only “replaced” telnet, not FTP. Back then there were “strong feelings about” rsh versus telnet, with SSH actually being modeled more after rsh/rcp/rlogin. Anyway at best this is probably just more internet protocol trivia but I do wonder if anybody can confirm I am remembering this right?
void-star··on Form a California LLC in 10 minutes for $70
I think this points out a significant reason "why to incorporate in CA" (as is being discussed elsewhere in the comments, as in "... instead of Delaware")

Could somebody clarify? Say I want to create a corporation, and will probably do work for it from home living in California. Does incorporating in Delaware now mean I will be paying the $800 tax (or some other) for CA, in addition to whatever Delaware charges?

void-star··on TP-Link firmware sends six DNS requests and one NTP query every 5 seconds
Strongly suspect this device doesn't have a RTC...
void-star··on Helping a Million Developers Exit Vim
Am I the only person who clicked on this link hoping it would provide guidance and help on how to switch to a different text editor after being "poisoned" by vi for so long?

Whenever I write code (or anything else) in another editor I still always have to carefully check diffs to confirm I don't have any vi control mode characters interspersed with whatever I was writing.

But I still can't quit using vi for everything else or my productivity goes into the toilet.

vi why can't I quit you?
