voakbasda··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
One look no further than Vietnam for how the government learned to use intranational xenophobia to manipulate different slices of the public into identifying as separate groups that could then be played off of each other. Since then, there has never been as successful a political movement, because we have been turned against each other by state-driven manipulation. AFAIK, this is well-documented policy intended to “maintain civil order” (i.e. prevent the revolution that is so richly deserved).
voakbasda··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
Yup. After almost 20 years, I have had enough of their crap. All of my new machines are getting Debian. Can’t wait until I am free of Ubuntu.
voakbasda··on The contagion of fear
Yeah, people don’t consider the possibility of a AI naming itself Marvin deciding to end it all.
voakbasda··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
Good thing for Hoka that the world keeps producing fresh batches of old people. They’ll do fine.
voakbasda··on Most People Don't Think About Culverts. Their Failure Can Be Deadly
I have a farm with dozens of culverts. I never appreciated them until I moved here and had to maintain and replace some of my own. Turns out those simple plastic tubes can cost a thousand dollars or more, and that is before you get to the cost to (re)install them. Infrastructure is expensive.
voakbasda··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
FWIW, a robot that fires a weapon independently is considered an automatic weapon, and the ATF will want to have a word. Have at it, but don’t let anyone know!
voakbasda··on White House weighs Defense Production Act to expand US oil refining capacity
This doesn’t reek of profiteering at all… oh, wait.
voakbasda··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
I don’t know why anyone gives Trump credit for things like this. He (like all elected officials for the past few decades) is a figurehead and has been manipulated by careerists at every step, who themselves are beholden to the lobbyists that grease the wheels of government.
voakbasda··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
And how many people can it be credited for saving from self harm? Probably countless more than it has harmed, if I had to bet.
voakbasda··on So you want to use OpenRouter?
Building a product that depends on a Google product seems like folly at this point. They are notoriously unreliable about keeping products alive. I hope you don’t get burned.
voakbasda··on Who Dung It? (Turdle.fun)
Sheep farmer here. You are right to be suspicious.

Healthy sheep poo does indeed look like a little pile of loose pebbles. However it is not uncommon for something to cause their stool to turn into a lump or patty. The pebbles can cluster together like pomegranate seeds or dissolve into a single mass of varying viscosity. The cause can be everything from diet changes, bacterial infections, parasitic infestations, or even stress.

If I owned the sheep that produced the sample from Wikimedia, I would be concerned about the animal’s health and be looking to intervene actively. That turd just ain’t right.

voakbasda··on Thanks to Siri Recaps, your Apple Watch is always listening
Even if you can trust them don’t, you cannot be sure you will trust them tomorrow.

And even if you trust Apple, do you trust the government will not abuse this access? Forever into the future?

voakbasda··on Thanks to Siri Recaps, your Apple Watch is always listening
Given how much people tend to get distracted by their phones, I am surprised most workplaces do not have a phone ban.
voakbasda··on Thanks to Siri Recaps, your Apple Watch is always listening
People are fucking liars. Everyone, everywhere, always.

I want to record every conversation surreptitiously, because that’s the only way to catch them.

The reason we can’t is because our politicians and legislators are the biggest liars of them all. It would spell their immediate downfall.

voakbasda··on Thanks to Siri Recaps, your Apple Watch is always listening
I believe the same is true in other states. Good luck convincing a DA to bring charges against any of these corporations.
voakbasda··on I think I hate the internet
If the blog is publicly published, so the author should be unmasked.

Identification schemes would be fine if there were never abused, but every single instance of them has been abused in the past. There is zero reason to believe it will it be different on the internet.

Are you familiar with how the DMCA gets abused? Do you really believe that bad actors will not find similar ways to abuse an identification system?

voakbasda··on I think I hate the internet
Everything. It is what allows corporations to conquer everything.
voakbasda··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
It is not just stigmatized. It is criminalized. A diagnoses can strip you of numerous rights.

When crooks are stealing from you and no justice can be found? He is right to be unhinged.

Well then, the founding fathers of the United States were all mentally ill. All of the greatest scientific minds that made breakthroughs in their field are mentally ill.
voakbasda··on Another researcher says OpenAI trained on conversations, then claimed breakthrou
No, it means you can use that work in the creation of new works, which can indeed be copyrighted.
voakbasda··on Rivian's gambit for full autonomy
This is the move that will win. Once available at that level, it will get adopted into smaller vehicles. There would be a huge market for self-driving golf carts or similar size vehicles in gated and retirement communities.
voakbasda··on Claude, change the “Add to Cart” button to blue
Every time I hear someone complain about hallucinations, I laugh at the total lack of self awareness about our species. Humans are just as bad (now, probably worse) at telling the truth, whether due to intention or poor memory.
voakbasda··on Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work?
I am working on an embedded device where AI coding has been contractually prohibited. I use it for learning about APIs and modern tools, but all of the code comes from my brain. The reason is that the issue of AI copyrights has not been resolved, and this product will be sold to parts of the government that care.

That said, their stance has been wavering, given the apparent inevitability that AI-washing of copyrighted works will be rubber stamped. As you say, damn near everyone has now embraced AI and infected their products with their output. The economic shock if this practice was found illegal would crater the stock market, so of course it will be made legal (at least for the big US models whose corps have been spending their lobbying dollars wisely).

Once the outcome becomes sufficiently clear, I expect the tide will turn, and I am not entirely sad about it. I would like to give them a spin for creating one-off tools, running security audits, tackling certain refactoring, analyze log files, and perform other adjacent tasks. But if I have my way, I will never delegate the core tasks of architecture, design, and development.

I can only say that because I am operating as an independent contractor, so I have a little agency to decide what I do.

Middle America: good luck eating when we cut off both of your food supplies.

Now both of you go stand in a corner until you are ready to work together to take down the government that has us all acting this way.
