vmchale··on JupyterLab 3.0
> I don't think it's Python's fault. Probably all the programming toolchains are this hard to a newbie!

Python is a little worse in that in pushes its dirtiness downstream to your users too.

vmchale··on Verified Programming in F*: A Tutorial
> Isn't it yet another copy of OCAML

No, closer to ATS maybe?

vmchale··on Verified Programming in F*: A Tutorial
Fairly new language.
vmchale··on Eyes hint at hidden mental-health conditions (2019)
I read that rapidly darting eye movements are characteristic of cluster A personality disorders (schizotypal, ...)

Wonder if it reflects something in the eyes.

vmchale··on Interactive C++ for Data Science
> I really wish the data science/algo community weren't going in the direction of Jupyter/Notebooks. It's an atrocious experience from a development standpoint

I see why scientists use it, but it lacks any FFI!

vmchale··on Microplastics found in the placentas of human fetuses
We are the fish now.
vmchale··on Voat Is Shutting Down
Same with parler. It's now totally dominated by weenieheads.
vmchale··on California nurses union plans holiday strike over PPE
CDC was muzzled by Trump admin. and a lot of that cascaded downwards.

But still, horrible to see.

vmchale··on California nurses union plans holiday strike over PPE
Especially since I (the general public) can get an N95 online. If companies aren't protecting their workers they're not trying hard enough.
vmchale··on When important components become scarce: CPUs, GPUs
I don't know if this counts but I want an ARM laptop performant like the M1 but with Linux (not from Apple?)
vmchale··on Commits are shapshots, not diffs
> It's analogous to how the difference between 5 and 15 is equal to the difference between 105 and 115.

Patches are torsors? :o

vmchale··on Commits are shapshots, not diffs
> How can two diffs ever be considered equivalent when they include a changed file that had different starting contents? Can they?

In darcs, patches commute. It works nicely sometimes!

vmchale··on Ultra-processed foods and the corporate capture of nutrition
> What does it mean to consume "ultra-processed" food?

Something like a snickers bar or packaged saltines maybe?

> Can someone give an example how the daily dietary intake can be 50% processed foods? What do you eat for that?

I mean, clif bars would count, for one. If you ate plain chocolate bars for 50% of your calories you'd probably overeat but... many people do!

vmchale··on I3: Improved Tiling Window Manager
> I never used much more than a simple L/R split

I use multi-displays too (XMonad; I assume i3 has the same!).

I use more complex splits occasionally for dev work I quite like it but I guess I could use something more conventional if it were keyboard-friendly.

vmchale··on I3: Improved Tiling Window Manager
I use XMonad and it has some ability to reconfigure such things. Not sure what the general solution is.
vmchale··on I3: Improved Tiling Window Manager
The mail client is worse than Windows IMO. But a tiling window manager and terminal is worth it for now.
vmchale··on I3: Improved Tiling Window Manager
Yup, I envy the M1 but I'm on XMonad (lol) and I really wouldn't want to go back to a non-tiling window manager.
vmchale··on Mundane: Rust cryptography library that is difficult to misuse
I do admire it!
vmchale··on Silicon Valley exodus: Bay Area tech companies leaving for Texas
Prop 13 is all of California, right?

> make their house unaffordable were it not for the protections

FB isn't the problem, the problem is zoning... Artificially cutting off supply to the benefit of landowners and capital.

vmchale··on Silicon Valley exodus: Bay Area tech companies leaving for Texas
> Boston should have been Silicon Valley. It had all the education

Boston is a tech hub, just smaller.

vmchale··on Silicon Valley exodus: Bay Area tech companies leaving for Texas
Universities help I think. Stanford, Berkeley &c. Many great public universities and many great universities!
vmchale··on Silicon Valley exodus: Bay Area tech companies leaving for Texas
Oracle leaving for Texas reminded me of this person: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18442941

People getting excited for Texas seems a bit silly! Real tech hub but... this is Oracle. C'mon.

vmchale··on Silicon Valley exodus: Bay Area tech companies leaving for Texas
Huge subsidy to Texas because of ridiculous policies in CA. Maybe CA should crack down on zoning policy in SF etc.?
vmchale··on Apple M1 vs. Ryzen 3900X vs. Intel I9 in Software Development
> I want to see if Apple is as eager to beat the competition in the HPC space

Doesn't HPC use PPC or something?

I could see them delivering on Desktop, not sure about HPC though. There's only one Fortran compiler for M1!

vmchale··on Apple M1 vs. Ryzen 3900X vs. Intel I9 in Software Development
Surprised SQLite was faster on Ryzen. But looks like M1 outperforms nearly everywhere else!
vmchale··on Pornhub just purged all unverified content from the platform
Less sympathetic plaintiffs?
vmchale··on Some doctors, therapists get Health Canada permission to use magic mushrooms
Sounds terrible but I guess better than being mentally ill if it works!
vmchale··on Some doctors, therapists get Health Canada permission to use magic mushrooms
You can get prison time for growing them in the US, depending on the state (spores are legal here too, no psilocybin).
vmchale··on Some doctors, therapists get Health Canada permission to use magic mushrooms
Psychedelics are sometimes recreational but they can do more.
vmchale··on EU countries team up for semiconductor push
> I never understood why Europe under-invested in semi considering the talents they have and the strategic nature of it.

Lots of better stuff in the US, until recently when the stagnation in the US made it more feasible (and politics made things scarier).
