vlisivka··on How to Survive the Apocalypse on $20
It is funny to read these comments AFTER surviving of huge economic crisis, Chernobyl and few smaller disasters.

15 years ago, at practice lesson about radiation protection in University, I found that the most radioactive item in the class room is me. How to deal with that fact, when you have no money even to buy enough food to live? I had only one choice - buy ticket back to my radioactive home, grab our self-grown radioactive food and return back to University. Half of people in the country were is similar situation.

If we are talking about Apocalypse, and not about camping in the woods, then you must consider that you will need to live in contaminated environment and there will be no room in clean environment for you. You will stay for decades in areas with moderate chemical or radioactive contamination, like Japan today (if nuclear reactor will blow up).

Surviving in woods is much harder and expensive task than surviving in home. I mean, than you will need much more time and energy to solve your basic problems, like food, water, fuel, hygiene, etc., so you will have no enough time to play with camping, even when you are alone, without wife and children. Try that with pregnant woman, or injured man, or 1 year old child, etc.

For me, idea, that I should walk to radioactive woods to survive economic crisis, sounds crazy. I can die in about 15 minutes if I will go into woods unprepared with temperature of -30°C (-22°F) outdoor. Even when I will be equipped with saw.

My recommendations:

Always keep full cigarette lighter with LED, multi-tool pocket knife, and small candle (anti-mosquito, preferably: slice large candle into smaller slices) in your pocket AND in your outdoor clothing - you will use them much more often than any other survival tool. I use them few times every month.

Keep needle, thread, plaster, healthing balm and another multi-tool in your backpack. I use one of them 5-6 times every year.

TRAIN yourself - if you are injured, you can prepare wound with healthing balm, then boil water in paper bag or plastic bottle, disinfect thread in water and needle in flame, blend needle, and then sew up yourself. But will you do that properly and fast enough when you will do that for first time?

What you will do when you are wet and you will have only 15 minutes to build hut and make fire before you will die? Will be you are smart enough to use your wet clothing as material for hut and put candle inside your clothing? Can you make wood candle or torch using your multitool when your candle will be near to expire?

For long-time survival, good tools and instruments are very helpful. My parent has garage full of instruments - it helps a lot. But lack of some instruments and replacement parts made us mad some years ago - we just had no money to buy them (low market - high prices, we had 3-5 times less money, and they were about 5 times more expensive than today). Lack of replacement parts or tools to repair equipment forces you to drop your most used equipment. You use it often -> it wears out fast -> you cannot repair or replace it -> you lose it.

vlisivka··on Why nothing can go faster than the speed of light
No, you cannot.

Do you know about Big Bang?

vlisivka··on Why nothing can go faster than the speed of light
> Relativity describes the real world.

Any theory describes real world to some degree.

> You seem to want to talk about theoretical ideas that have no evidence.

:-/ We can test my ideas in your laboratory, of course.

> You quite misunderstood that article, it's not the vacuum that produces the particles, it is the massive energy they are beaming that produces them.

Do you really read article? Of course, energy is necessary, because two vacuum particles will cannot escape each other and will annihilate. But you cannot produce particle using just energy.

> The stuff in the wikipedia article is just ideas that may work mathematically but have little bearing on the real world. At least for now. Maybe someday we'll figure them out, but for now it's just ideas.

Some far galaxies are traveling from us much faster than speed of light because of space expanding. Thus theory of relativity will work correctly for distances less than 1B of light years, but it is not correct for larger distances. Are you agree?

vlisivka··on Why nothing can go faster than the speed of light
Relativity is theory. We are talking about real world.

We already know, that vacuum can generate particles, thus it is not completely empty:

http://scienceblog.com/40901/theoretical-breakthrough-genera...

You can find much more information about faster than speed traveling here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faster_than_light_travel .

vlisivka··on Why nothing can go faster than the speed of light
Wave cannot travel faster than speed of wave in medium.

Matter is form of electromagnetic wave, thus matter cannot travel faster that speed of electromagnetic wave in medium ("vacuum").

Everything that is not a form of electromagnetic wave, OR disconnected from electromagnetic medium, will be not bound to speed of light.

Imagine water and water waves. Water waves will never travel faster than speed of wave in water.

BUT, you can freeze water and push it faster than water wave just because it is not a part of water anymore.

I hope, super-cold vacuum (below 0K) or matter in cocoon of super-cold vacuum will be able to travel faster than speed of light.

PS.

Of course, I cannot even imagine, how we can freeze vacuum, because we cannot even interact with it.

vlisivka··on How to Communicate if Your Government Shuts Off Your Internet
IF government will shutdown even Internet, will it keep land-line phones online?

You can start from linmodem project: http://bellard.org/linmodem.html , it may allow to create 9600 connection on 1GHz processor.

Of course, phones have built-in DSP processor, but each phone model has it own DSP. Some OpenGL chips are able to do FFT using vDSP (e.g. iPhone4), so it can be used to accelerate soft modem.

vlisivka··on Scott Adams: How to Tax the Rich
No. It depends on how much someone eat.

Imagine company, which has 10000 shareholders. You own 10% of company. Company needs some financial helps, e.g. $250M. How much you should pay? $100? $250M/10000?

vlisivka··on Scott Adams: How to Tax the Rich
Increase every next fine by two. Drop older fines after year.

If we will start from 1, then nobody will be able to get more than 32 fines per year, even Bill Gates. ;-)

vlisivka··on Ask HN: Any web startups using Java?
Because CouchDB implements about 80% of what we need. I can reimplement core engine of Bazaarvoice engine after first year of development in few days using CouchDB. (About 5% of our work).
vlisivka··on Ask HN: Any web startups using Java?
Java/MySQL was right choice for Bazaarvoice 5 years ago, when we started. CouchDB will be my choice in today world.
vlisivka··on Developing When Your Computer is too Fast
I also started programming in late 80's, and I use that technique too. Currently, my netbook is more powerful than my primary laptop. :-)

My laptop is also able to variate CPU clock speed from 2GHz to 200MHz. It makes me easy to execute CPU-bound benchmarks of my programs.

vlisivka··on Top 5 trends and technologies in software development
Use Evently, CouchDB and CouchApp's.
vlisivka··on Ask HN: The future of programming languages?
The language(s) of future will be fifth generation languages. Current languages are not able to support more than 100M lines of code in one project and more than 10-20 years of continuous development.

In future, we will have something like that:

#... We are wrote large project using HTML7, but HTML8 is just released ...

$ spm update

...

12826 source files will be updated, 2324 new source files will be added, 343 source files will be deleted. Proceed? [Y/n] y

...

Done

#... OK, let continue our development ...

PS.

I have demo. I hate developing in any 3/4GL language now. :-)

vlisivka··on Four Lessons Learned From An Excursion Into Solo Web Programming
> (2) Think very hard about whether you really want to design any reasonably complex user interface in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript instead of either (A) programming a native application or (B) using some other browser-based user interface framework like Flash (or perhaps coding the entire interface in an HTML 5 canvas if you're some sort of "standards" fetishist). Not that I've actually tried doing anything in Flash or HTML 5 canvases, but seriously [cue: Famous Last Words], how could anything possibly be more painful than designing user interfaces in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript?

WTF? Look at couchapp's.

Of course, it is no fun when code of whole application is written in one large HTML page.

I use Evently widgets with CouchDB, PHP and java. I use my own little framework on top of that. I use MVC, my own libraries, and database abstraction layer. I have no problems with coding of whole application HTML/JavaScript.

vlisivka··on A new way to think about programs
I am working on system which (I hope) will be 5GL. I use literate programming as it main programming language. I cannot use any 1/2/3/4GL language in the system because of lot of limitations in 3/4GL languages. My system operates on meta-meta-data about code. I can define meta-meta-data about code using literate programming only.

If you will look at some existing systems, which operate with meta-meta-data, like yum/rpm, or apt/deb, or maven2, etc., then you will see, that code, which describes packages, is literate-like: it contains author, title, description, general overview of package, etc. It does not contains function, or something like that.

If my English is wrong - sorry. I am Ukrainian.

vlisivka··on Ask HN: How to tell quickly if someone is professional?
I know very quick method: Ask "why?" repeatedly.
vlisivka··on Moon Not Only Has Water, but Lots of It
Why you need to build planet-sized shield? Why not pollute top layers of atmosphere with something bright? SO2 will be good choice. One satellite with few tons of SO2 can pollute Venus atmosphere in few weeks, and it will stay polluted for thousands of years.
vlisivka··on [dead]
Both languages (Python and Ruby) are 3GL. So you will be almost equally productive on both.
vlisivka··on jQuery 1.4.3 Released
jQuery is good framework. jQuery + event driven programming - is excellent. jQuery + event driven programming + CouchDB + couchapp + Evently + Pathbinder - is astonishing. :-)

I found that it worth to reimplement CouchDB interface in PHP just to be able to reuse same Evently widgets in PHP part of my application.

vlisivka··on I think I figured out why good Java developers are so hard to find
> C++ is popular in industry, so ask for C instead. Java is popular, so ask for Scala instead. OO Perl is popular, so ask for Moose instead.

Ah, you missed my favorite languages. :-)

I hate programming in any 3/4GL language - lot of typing and too hard to reuse.

vlisivka··on I think I figured out why good Java developers are so hard to find
Micromanagement of GC is possible using Soft/Weak/Phantom references, see http://weblogs.java.net/blog/2006/05/04/understanding-weak-r... .

> Of course, in C(++) you can design much more memory-efficient data structures through pointer arithmetic.

Yeah, you can reinvent the wheel in C++, C or even in ASM.

vlisivka··on What is the best scripting language to learn?
I use and like bash too. However, bash has no repository with bash packages, which can be downloaded and installed automatically by package manager, like Perl and CPAN, PHP and PEAR, Python and easy_install, Java and Maven/Ivy, JavaScript and NodeJS, or even Linux and apt/yum.

I understand that problem, so I use my own bash-modules system to speed-up development in bash (see http://vlisivka.pp.ua/en/bash_modules ), but number of modules is so tiny, so there is no sense to create repository for these modules.

vlisivka··on Ask HN: is C# Evil or Not?
> Purely technical, please :)

Technically, C# is the language. Only live things can be good or evil. Microsoft is the Evil company, and C# is their language.

For example, A-bomb, technically, is a big nuclear bomb. It is good thing in our hands and evil thing in their hands.

vlisivka··on OAuth 2.0 (without Signatures) is Bad for the Web
OAuth 1.0 is mix of authentication problem (as solved by HTTP authentication) and connection protection problem (as solved by SSL) and cross-site authentication problem.

OAuth 2.0 is mix of authentication problem (as solved by HTTP authentication) and cross-site authentication problem.

I hope, OAuth 3.0 will solve cross-site authentication problem only, so I can use standard HTTP or cookie-based authentication solutions and standard HTTPS protocol (when necessary).

Forget all that stuff. Just improve your code until it will tell you problem and it exact cause, you will save a lot on "Repeat" step.
