vletal··on A preliminary analysis of DALL-E 2 (Marcus, Davis, Aaronson)
> ... it is reasonable to question whether DALL-E 2 constitutes progress toward solving the deep challenges of commonsense reasoning, comprehension, reliability, and so forth that would be needed for a truly general-purpose AI ...

I like how they pose this question as a bait to the abstract yet they do not even attempt to answer it. Instead they focus on general shortcomings of the model.

Moreover, there is no proper conclusion which would discuss the findings.

Given how outspoken Gary Marcus is on Twitter - criticising current advances in DL I would expected him to do a much better job publishing a document about it.

vletal··on AI can't tell you it's lying if it thinks it's telling the truth
1. Person can not tell you they are lying if they think they tell the truth

2. To fully understand a person you need to know their history

vletal··on Why do we call Deutschland Germany? (2020)
This is exactly why I first skim comments before opening the link itself. Thank you.
vletal··on U+237C ⍼ Right Angle with Downwards Zigzag Arrow
I do not get it. Did you have to shut it down? Does not make sense to complain that someone uploaded stuff to a public unprotected writable storage. Wouldn't securing it with a set of credentials suffice?
vletal··on Shine: A super fast fixed-point MP3 encoder
When we have anough compute or the models get much smaller. At this point it seems wasteful to utilize gaming level GPU to decode audio stream.
vletal··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
Looks easy. Yet you need to write the JPG to a temp file first since applescript does not seem to be able to parse JPEG without seek(), hence no piping / streaming possible.

vletal··on Daniel Gross: Why Energy Is the Best Predictor of Talent
> fire fast

My former company fired bunch of people at the beginning of COVID, because of the reaction of markets and our clients, some of whom left us. The fired employees were either new hires or bad apples. IMO it cleaned up the air a lot at the time.

On the other hand firing people is costly. For small to mid size companies, this advice might not be a as viable as it sounds.

vletal··on Ask HN: How does a CPU communicate with a GPU?
OK. I am definitely old...

- I have mostly no joy playing video games anymore these days.

- I found myself refusing some contemporary stuff in favour of stuff "I am used to".

Damn! I was always looking at my dad, not understanding that very same things :) Now I am a dad myself...

vletal··on Ask HN: How does a CPU communicate with a GPU?
Nice exercise. Similarly I learned most about basic computer architecture by programing 8050 in ASM as well as C.

And I'm 32. Am I old yet? I'm not right? Right?

vletal··on Kotlin for JavaScript
The Jetbrains ecosystem is well integrated. Kotlin is a dish best served with IDEA. There are people who do not like using it.
vletal··on Silicon Valley’s supposed obsession with tech-free private schools (2019)
Mark was on Lexes podcast counter arguing against that. Any link? I'm really interested in the source material.
vletal··on Fuchsia IDL Overview
It's there really some reason not to generalize IPC to RPC "between processes"?

To be more specific, is there really a justifiable specific of either of these applications which prevent us from having a single tool which would cover both?

vletal··on Germany considers keeping nuclear power plants online
Well, I definitely did not expect it can be done over night. More like over a year or something.
vletal··on Moscow police officers stop people, request their phones to read their messages
Yeah. With a message which literally says "use Telegram to overthrow Putin"...
vletal··on Germany considers keeping nuclear power plants online
Could they maybe like reopen some?!
vletal··on Ukraine calls on hacker underground to defend against Russia
I have a limited experience in security field, all I could do was to donate money. Yet if I did fucking trust me I'd be putting all my spare time into this.

To anyone with the required skill set. Please, this is you chance to remotely help UA.

vletal··on No minimum parking requirements? No problem for Fayetteville, Arkansas
I am perplexed that this makes headlines. Even the free market has spoken. People pay premium to live in a more dense areas where the stuff they enjoy and interact with is within their proximity.

Interesting how successful the car manufacturer lobby was in the US, transforming whole cities and life styles of ordinary Americans for generations.

vletal··on Top Performers Have a Superpower: Happiness
There is a process called evolution going on. It's gradual and at some point there was a first bird which had the right gene combination for us to call it a chicken. It's parents did not have this specific traits and hence it's the egg which came first. Not some random "eggs".

We should come up with a better alternative paradoxes ...

vletal··on Top Performers Have a Superpower: Happiness
Chicken. If we establish some trait of a chicken we could be able to trace the first bird wich had the specific gene combination and it's parents had not. Still a well defined non paradox.
vletal··on Top Performers Have a Superpower: Happiness
Even if you put it like that, it is the egg that a chicken hatches from. The other option does not work at all.
vletal··on Top Performers Have a Superpower: Happiness
Such a pre-Darwinian mental exercise. It's there some other common variant, which actually is undefined?

Let me try - rivers or rain? - ping or pong?

vletal··on Tesla cut a steering component from some cars, didn’t tell customers
Anyway "considered redundant backup not necessary for level 2 autonomy" breaks the "all Teslas now have the HW required for full autonomy" promise. They should have told customers.
vletal··on Gut microbe linked to depression in large health study
Is this really the causality. Could it be the other way around? Depressed people might in time develop bowl disorders?
vletal··on Amazon Pip Horror Story
This is a relevant insight, I do not understand why it got downvoted.

Even though Amazon has a history of such events, we should care about the bigger picture, yet be skeptical about the individual claims anyway!

vletal··on Normalized crash data shows Autopilot is much less safe than Tesla claims
Yeah, seems like a typo a GPT-3 would do.

The claim seems to be that Teslas do not drink before driving, not Tesla owners, right?

vletal··on Testing Firefox more efficiently with machine learning
I hope that incremental complication will get to a point for some languages where a significant portion of this could be cached.
vletal··on Fe – An emerging smart contract language for the Ethereum blockchain
You tried to contradict the claim that the is no impactful application of smart contacts yet you failed to give a single example.
vletal··on Show HN: I had some time yesterday so I made a GPT3 podcast to help you sleep
Brothers Grims would definitely agree with that sentiment.
vletal··on Show HN: I had some time yesterday so I made a GPT3 podcast to help you sleep
I love the idea, yet... The latest episode 7 is about a girl thinking about killing a witch, kicking her in a face, her hitting her back, and stuff.

Definitely did not help me fall a sleep.

vletal··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
Just please cite the studies you mentioned. There is way too much nuance to be boiled down to such general claim.
