just placing them all in the same orbit works ;)

Congrats! You reached 500 years without going unstable! 120,047 points over 500.1 years!

vladtaltos··on Trolling the search engines
I concur it is known - however, it is still impressive that google does not have a counter-measure against it. he says they indexed 140k pages of it. phew. consider having a few thousand of these pots set-up and cross linking to each other left and right. they'll be crippled... I sense a bug somewhere...

vladtaltos··on How I Lost My $50,000 Twitter Username
besides the obvious stupidity of the parties involved, why would anyone pay for such an uninformative handle 50k ? @N ? seriously -- doesn't spam occur for twitter feeds yet ? I remember when google started off they didn't allow you to have email addresses less than 6 characters to avoid spam...

btw, @! google search returns 0 results. interesting... hmm, twitter apparently allows alphanumeric handles only...

vladtaltos··on Why is a minute divided into 60 seconds, an hour into 60 minutes?
you should also consider the extensibility of the metric system as well. Any unit when has a kilo prefix is understood to be x1000 even if you are not familiar with the original quantity. kJ is kilo joules, km is kilo meters. I have no idea how this is handled in your non-metric system is but this property of the SI system definitely makes it much more extensible. you immediately get a sense of the ratio of different metrics. for example consider the ratios of miles/feet ??? feet/inch ??? (I have no idea) compared to kilometers/meters meters/millimeters... this makes it possible to define a metric for a quantity ( meters for distance for example ) and represent all the related quantities easily without having to define a new name for a constant multiple of that quantity.

of course perception of a metric also plays a tremendous role here. I don't have a 'feel' for how long it is 12-feet for example but I can eye-ball a distance and tell how many meters it is pretty accurately. I guess this perception is the main issue that prevents imperial system to be abandoned in favor of SI - people are too much used to it.

I also hate the left driving lane of UK btw. It screws up with my head every time I rent a car in London...

stupid metric-ism ;)

vladtaltos··on Gmail blows up e-mail marketing by caching all images on Google servers
> Absurdly wrong, marketers already use a unique image URL for each email recipient, and Google has no way to know that all of those point to the same image.

wrong.

you can of course do simple image processing and identify similar images. if the marketers only change the name(url) of the file and not the content one-bit, you can trivially compare the hash of the file... even if the marketers change content, assuming the marketer sent the image %90 same and 10% customized per person, you can borrow techniques from image compression domain to compress this humongous data very efficiently.

vladtaltos··on Linkedin's Response to My "Phishing with Intro" Post
They should have paid the guy - not send cheap trinkets. And also no chump change as well. He went out of his way to even help them roll-out the hot fix.

Don't be a 'cheap kind of company' linkedin. Pay up.

vladtaltos··on What are the math heavy CS areas with high demand?
Go for computer vision/pattern recognition. There seems to be a shortage of enough 'good' people for them - even in HN I read very low quality vision related blog news as if they are very good ones... (I remember an image rotation article a few months back...). There are very good CS guys here but vision/learning seems to be a bit underrepresented...

I'm getting pretty good contracts for doing research work from pretty big US companies/startups and I'm not even located in US...

I did electronics engineering in undergrad, signal processing in masters and computer vision in phd - also took some courses in physics. I sort of wish I did some formal math courses (optimization/graph theory/variational calculus) as well. Applied math will help you a lot in CV/ML domain so that's a pretty good idea for you to get it. ML is very hot and there are lots of people going after that but don't forget to check out the geometric part of the cv - finding camera calibrations, stereo, multiview stereo or the realtime stuff as cv is being used more and more in mobile apps... Computational photography is my new focus these days - I'm getting more queries about that... PM me if you like more detailed info...

kid says his reactor cannot meltdown. swiss one had a meltdown. don't know if it is true though...

also, the underground thing worked - no ? it contained the radioactivity - wikipedia says no pollution occurred... in the case of a ground level one, I'd guess the Vaud canton would be pretty f-up

vladtaltos··on Making Clouds Go Away on MapBox Satellite
looks pretty cool. great work. I especially loved the fact that your mehod does not blur the edges significantly and the color profiles are pretty good.

I have a few questions you haven't mentioned in your blog and would appreciate it if you can answer them here.

is there some sort of public ftp server you can log in and get say the last 2 days' maps of any given coordinate ? and if so can you share the address ?

additionally, are the image coordinates that come with the images really that accurate that you can do pixel comparisons over time without doing any sort of registration ?

vladtaltos··on Poll: Did you transfer your domains from GoDaddy today?
no because I also have hosting over there. if any of the ssh+git friendly competitors are willing to waive the hosting fee for the remainder of my contract with godaddy, I'll be more than glad to switch. otherwise I'll have to stick with them...

I disabled automatic renewal though - so I'll definitely leave them when I get my money's worth.

ps: don't dish me cause I don't want to move away due to money. sadly money is an issue for me these days... :(
