vladde··on A laptop stand made from a single sheet of recycled paper
That whole video is really neat, love the guy teaching!
vladde··on New physical AWS Data Transfer Terminals let you upload to the cloud faster
I don't think I've ever handled so much data I'd need to increase data throughput.

How much are we talking? Like petabytes? (Do you just stroll in with on a huge disk array?)

vladde··on How I use git
Lots of people commented on the comment about not needing a GUI client in this thread (same link): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41890480

To add my own touch, I find staging certain parts of a file in the CLI bothersome, when I can just click-and-drag highlight what lines I want committed in eg. Sublime Merge. Not perfect, but waaay easier than with the default CLI in my opinion.

vladde··on Show HN: I built the most over-engineered Deal With It emoji generator
Love it. I'll definitely be using this!
vladde··on macOS Crash with UnixDatagram
> I expected to see this happen: no crash of the operating system > Instead, this happened: macOS 15.0.1 crashed

It's pretty funny to read those two lines after each other IMO :)

vladde··on Hetzner Object Storage
Looks like it's in beta https://docs.hetzner.com/storage/object-storage/faq/beta
vladde··on Show HN: Visualization of website accessibility tree
Looks neat, and way more clean than https://wave.webaim.org/
vladde··on Patent troll Sable pays up, dedicates all its patents to the public
Could someone explain to me why it was decided that Sable will release the patents to the public?
vladde··on Winamp currently receiving Russian mass-spam issues
Winamp recently had its source code released with a custom license that went against GitHub's TOS, with multiple issues created about it[0].

Within the past 15 hours, the repo has gained over 900 issues in Russian, that vary from "shitposts"[1] to vague threats[2]. An additional 100 issues are also closed.

vladde··on Playdate – a new handheld game system
I have one of these (I was in batch 1), and it's a really neat little play console. The quality of the physical device is really good IMO, and the operating system has a lot of flare and generally fun to use.

I don't think they have the same problems with manufacturing anymore, but when I ordered mine it took over a year for it to arrive (bought 29 July 2021, received 6 September 2022); something about their batteries not being good back then.

However, I rarely end up playing with it, and more often than not when I want to use it, it's already been so long since last time it has no battery charge.

But I don't regret getting it – every time I do open it it's fun, and it's a really cute device :)

vladde··on Reader-LM: Small Language Models for Cleaning and Converting HTML to Markdown
Unfortunately not getting any good results for RFC 3339 (https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc3339), such a page where I think it would be great to convert text into readable Markdown.

The end result is just like the original site but with without any headings and the a lot of whitespace still remaining (but with some non-working links inserted) :/

Using thei API link, this is what it looks like: https://r.jina.ai/https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc3339

vladde··on UE5 Nanite in WebGPU
Got to love in the stated goals:

> I could have built this with Vulkan and Rust. None would touch it.

vladde··on We built the city of Colombo in Cities:Skylines
Is using games for real-life city planning a viable option to later apply in real life? I.e. if my city wanted to try out a new metro line, is replicating the city in Cities: Skylines good enough to simulate what would happen?

Related (Kerbal Space Program): https://xkcd.com/1356/

vladde··on Can you convert a video to pure CSS?
Hillarious! Soon enough people will rebuild entire browsers with box shadows :)
vladde··on The Monospace Web
Super cool! Love how nice the tree-list looks! Readability with monospace is always a bit troubling, but I think this is a great take on it :)

I made a similar thing where I take semantic HTML and render it as old RFC documents: https://vladde.net/blog/rfc-css/ (not as readable though IMO)

vladde··on Galois Theory
That's an interesting way of holding a pen, never seen that before

vladde··on Show HN: Iso20022.js – Create payments in 3 lines of code
That's the longest 3 lines of code I've ever seen.
vladde··on Insomnium (offline-only fork of Insomnia) is dead
The online requirements for Postman (and now Insomnia) was a deal-breaker wether to use it at work. We opted for Bruno[1], which is local-only

vladde··on Show HN: Turn any website into a knowledge base for LLMs
The example API key on the page is decoded to "WOW YOU'RE A HACKER" :)
vladde··on Don't use 7-segment displays (2011) [pdf]
Posy made a wonderful video about different numbered segment designs https://youtu.be/RTB5XhjbgZA
vladde··on McDonald's Loses 'Big Mac' Trademark in European Union
> The decision by the EU General Court does not affect our right to use the ‘BIG MAC’ trademark

Do they still have the trademark, or is BIG MAC up for grabs for anyone?

vladde··on Learn how to unleash the full potential of the type system of TypeScript
Similar to the paid tool https://www.executeprogram.com/ , which goes very much more in-depth with TypeScript's type system (as well with other languages)
vladde··on Show HN: I may have created a new type of puzzle
I don't get it.

I beat it. It's a neat puzzle, but why the tremendous upvotes for this?

vladde··on Mechanical Watch
They have other blog posts as well, all equally interesting and detailed.
vladde··on _hyperscript: A jQuery and JavaScript Alternative
I wouldn't implement this in any larger projects. Reading through the syntax it seems to fluctuate between choppy flow and fluent English.

Possibly for smaller personal projects, but maybe that is what the library is for.
