Hi! I'm Vladislav, a full-stack engineer leading front-end efforts for VideoML for Meta. Previously, I led and shipped B2C and B2B products for DoorDash, Uber, Salesforce, Medallia, and with the founders of Twitch and YouTube.

In 2012, I led and shipped MixBit.com for YouTube founders at the same time as we launched the MixBit mobile app, both a way for users to watch and remix videos (like TikTok).

In 2009 at Justin.tv (which became Twitch), I created a Win/Mac/Linux command line app used for streaming 1 million hours of video from VLC to our video servers. Also, I built the first spin-off of a channel category in two days, months before this was done for SocialCam, and then again gaming to start Twitch.

Through 2003-2007, I designed, built, and shipped a desktop app for 1,000 paying customers in 12 countries to win auctions on a dozen eBay sites, Yahoo! auctions, and Overstock.

I did my Engineering Physics I homework using mirrored writing. The instructor didn't mind. Looking back, it's a bit risky given you're drawing equations and arrows, not only text. I hadn't tried this before or since.

At the end of the semester, I told him physics seemed fun but I thought software engineering was a better career choice for me. Only years later did I find via LinkedIn that he had worked as a software engineer for ten years before. :D

"probably because it's more natural for a left-hander to write backwards".

No, the key is that pulling the writing instrument requires a lot less muscle than pushing it. This means that mirror writing requires 1) more muscle strain or 2) less muscle strain than writing with the dominant hand if either the hand is switched, or the direction (LTR or RTL). If you swap both factors at the same time, then the strain is the same.

Left-handers who write LTR and switch direction (RTL) reduce the muscle strain compared to their usual writing as they're now pulling the pen. A right hander who does the same in this situation has to push the pen RTL with their right hand, which is harder than they're used to. A right hander should use the left-hand for mirror writing so they pull the pen like they're used to.

From this information, you can derive why people think it's easier to mirror write by switching hands, and others think it's easier for left-handers than right-handers to mirror write with their original hand.

TL;DR: Yes, there is initial effort to start mirror writing. But the real difference is that in the long-term, one group will find mirror writing to cause more hand strain than normal, and others will find it less hand strain than normal, because in one group pushing the pen is normal and in the other pulling it is.

vlad··on Four New Names Officially Added to the Periodic Table of Elements
Traditionally, the names of all noble gases end in "-on", with the exception of helium, which was not known to be a noble gas when discovered.

The IUPAC guidelines valid at the moment of the discovery approval however required all new elements be named with the ending "-ium".

A new IUPAC recommendation published in 2016 recommends using the "-on" ending for new group 18 elements, no matter whether they turn out to be a noble gas or not.

In June 2016 IUPAC announced that it planned to give the element the name oganesson (symbol: Og), in honour of the Russian nuclear physicist Yuri Oganessian, and the name became official on 28 November 2016.

vlad··on Steve Ballmer Says Smartphones Broke His Relationship with Bill Gates
1) You had to pay full price and sign up for a two year contract with AT&T when the iPhone first came out.

2) Another fact that supports Ballmer's point that the phones were too expensive is that Apple dropped the price by several hundred dollars a few months after launching it.

So, yes, there were two year contracts, but no smartphone was $0 down or close to it at the time.

vlad··on Tell HN: Kevin will comment on more Show HNs this Friday
No problem! Thanks for showing me this app. Sorry for suggesting additional work on your plate. Always easier to provide feedback than to build from scratch! :)
vlad··on Tell HN: Kevin will comment on more Show HNs this Friday
Thanks for your brave submission, and going first. :) Here's what I have so far, as a "transcript."

1) First instinct: The fact it's an iPhone app and for weight loss, I got the vibe I have to spend time (do work) to compare how it's different from what's out there. I also don't realize what I would even search for to find competitors.

In other words, I didn't think “it’s a tool to help me lose weight” like an iPhone or a frying pan are clearly tools. Instead, I thought, it’s one of thousands of apps I have to compare and learn, a bummer.

2) Therefore, create some layouts (screens) that make the user feel they already know how they’ll use it and why before they even download it (regardless of what else exists). You know how to use a water pitcher, refrigerator, or even a digital piano (press on/off, push any key to make sound). Yes, there might be a learning curve to become an expert with tools (e.g. piano) but it’s clear what you’ll be doing with it.

3) Maybe you need one big screenshot on top of the page, a simple screen that simply shows a smooth graph based on the health kit weight data. And the explanation “install to visualize your data instantly, your info stays private on your device”. And a big Install now button. Nothing to learn. That might be worth $0.99 (or more) on its own.

And then of course you have the other stuff that people can explore and learn over time.

4) I like the “track multiple family members” screen because I let multiple users create profiles in my desktop software, too. I’m worried nobody really cares to share their weight data with a friend.

5) I would survey users to find out what their favorite parts of the app are, and what one feature makes them come back. Or what one feature they would miss if they lost it. Maybe that feature should have its own screen.

6) Another reason that people tend to trust simple screens is because they make the product look like “there’s less to break” to bugs, and a higher chance it will still work on their next phone, so it’s worth buying.

7) My reaction was, the benefits or features at the top of your page are hard to understand. The last sentence of the paragraph is the only one that actually describes what the app might do or how it benefits you. Also, Tame the Scale seems like the app name, not Happy Scale.

And the last sentence doesn’t go far enough. The real benefit is, "see your real weight trend, instantly, to stay motivated”, not to see trends. Or to control their emotions rather than being a "yoyo" that feels "I'm losing weight, I'm gaining weight" every other day. Stay motivated, confident, and consistent.

With that simple screenshot and text at the top of the page, that should be an awesome way to get people to take the initial action of installing the app (at the end of the day, you want people to install it, not read your site!)

vlad··on Tell HN: Kevin will comment on more Show HNs this Friday
Maybe I should mention Rate My App, my video channel to provide feedback for Show HN projects. I didn't know Kevin was going to provide feedback, but I hope I can add value, too.

I enjoyed providing feedback on HN in the past (post #2 at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8863).

For credentials, I used to have my own app before Y Combinator started and I did everything myself -- programming, design, marketing, and customer service -- like many of you are.

vlad··on Amazon API Gateway – Build and Run Scalable Application Backends
I think Apigee wanted to announce their own "Swagger Editor" instead of mine when they created the Swagger 2.0 working group with Tony, as is their right since Tony paid me as a consultant, and Apigee put their own employees to work on it. So they made a fresh repo: same name and technology choices, different approach.
vlad··on Amazon API Gateway – Build and Run Scalable Application Backends
Hi Mohsen,

Interesting! Re: SwaggerUI, it already existed as CoffeeScript and Backbone.js.

I built "Swagger Editor" for Tony, the creator of Swagger, as a paid OSS project; the screenshot shows the Swagger Editor back in Apr 2014 before yours existed.

I notice that a month later, you created "Swagger Editor" using the same technologies I chose (Yeoman, AngularJS, Ace Editor, etc) and took over the name.

I imagine the people who shared the private repository, including your employer Apogee, saw how fast I made mine and wanted to do their own from scratch, but I don't know.

I just took a look at your slides, looks like you've worked on yours for a year since, and use AST to understand where errors are, nice.

vlad··on Amazon API Gateway – Build and Run Scalable Application Backends
I'm not mentioned on that site or their launch blog post, but my code to ApiEditor was shared privately with the Swagger Editor folks who went on to create that editor, also in AngularJS.
vlad··on Amazon API Gateway – Build and Run Scalable Application Backends
I'm working on ApiEditor.com, here's a screenshot:

http://i.imgur.com/wSEKeVb.png

I originally built it for the Swagger Spec 15 months ago, as the first visual Swagger Editor. Let me know if you guys are interested in using something like this.

Notice it has the code side-by-side. Also, it scrolls to and highlights the section of the spec you're editing. Notice the dropdowns are aware of custom models (e.g. "User", "Order") in the documents and suggest them to make it easy to use.

Check out this screenshot, what I may release as ApiEditor.com

It would be nice to have one place to edit routes with a good UI, better than what Amazon released today.

vlad··on Stack Exchange Engineering: How We Built Our Blog
That’s exactly what I just did for my daily video / podcasting site Rate My App.com.

- Everything in markdown

- Generate the podcasts as an RSS feed

- Generate the list of videos as JSON, filtered inside the AngularJS app

Such an approach is not great for SEO in the short-term, so I won't be surprised if they lose ranking because their posts and comments are missing from the the html until their jQuery code fetches and renders them.

For me, I don't have 700 posts so that's easy to address later once I have content worth indexing, keeping the urls the same of course. :)
