An often overlooked aspect of statistics of human traits is that even a small difference in the variance of a normal(ish) distribution results in a large difference in the extreme quantiles. As men tend to have more variance in everything due to having only one X chromosome, it's expected that the most extreme individuals in everything are more male than female. In addition, when some aspect of the society is organized like a winner-takes-all game, it is naturally the most extreme individuals, who are mostly male, who end up at the top.

As every function of the society scales more and more, more things become winner-takes-all games and end up being male dominated. However, it is hardly useful to frame it as some kind of sex warfare since, unlike many feminists claim, this doesn't help most men at all since they never had any shot at the top anyway. It's more like we have three "sex groups": all women, normal men and extreme outlier men. The only way to prevent the extreme outlier men from dominating everything is to prevent winner-takes-all games.

Depends a bit on your location also. In some countries, the social security is good enough that people can survive on them while doing whatever (low cost) hobbies they like. I've heard of a few academics continuing to do research while being supported by the unemployment money.

But yeah, some big company offering a crapload of money to buy lichess is also a problem. No-one is idealistic enough to refuse an amount of money that can support them and their family for the next two generations.

Is anyone aware of any serious(ish) open source game projects using Godot? I very much like the idea of game development as a hobby project and I'd think that contributing something small to an existing project is a better way to learn the ropes than just making an entire game by myself.

Yes. A 0.4% increase in health problems is what most people would consider "basically safe". How does that compare to effects from other bad dietary habits many people have. For instance:

* eating processed meat a few times a week

Maybe it was once, but things like Myfitnesspal make diet tracking pretty easy for everyone nowadays. As for timing and macronutrient composition of foods, that's something the dieticians can probably help, but it's also something you can learn in a few hours by watching Youtube.

Having trainers, dieticians, etc. professionals around you to help with everything probably makes it easier in the sense that you probably save one or two hours of planning and organizing your life per week, and probably your programming is a bit more optimized, but it's hardly a game changer. If you are somewhat devoted to the topic, you can learn and do all the same stuff yourself.

Older people with extraordinary abilities have, in traditional bureaucratic companies, learned that bullshitting and playing politics is the easiest way to succeed. When they internalize this way of working, there is no going back; it makes them lazy and cynical.

Somehow, it requires a certain amount of naivety to _actually_ try to solve a hard problem instead of pretending to do something and then write a 100 page bullshit report (or mostly copy an old report) on it.
