vj44··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2017)
OnSpecta | Palo Alto, CA | Software Engineer | Remote | Visa OnSpecta | Palo Alto, CA | Research Engineer | Remote | Visa

OnSpecta is an early-stage startup founded by successful serial entrepreneurs and deep learning experts from MIT, which was born out of MIT’s neuroscience lab. We offer a Deep Learning Server (DLS) which increases the performance of deep learning computations on Intel and ARM CPUs. Unlike most AI start-ups, OnSpecta has the luxury to attack multiple verticals at once. We already have pilots with unicorn-type customers within Autonomous Vehicle, Healthcare, and Consumer Devices (aka Drones).

vj44··on NIH to retire all research chimpanzees
I'd like to challenge the underlying assumption of NIH's reasoning here: “We reached a point where in that five years the need for research has essentially shrunk to zero. “

This is not true. The demand for research animals is huge, and growing. Due to extremely restrictive laws and procedures governing the use of animals in research in the US and the EU (source: my own experience), virtually all interesting research (=breakthrough/publishable) becomes impractical.

What has already happened is that all interesting research moved to countries with less restrictive laws, namely China (source: direct exposure to my Chinese colleagues in neuroscience). With their vast and unrestrictive funding (CAS etc.), it is the Chinese who are now coming out with some fascinating results. More than that, some of my EU/US colleagues collaborate directly with them, on the exact same research, just on the Chinese soil (read: inconvenience of relocation, but that's about it).

vj44··on Thank you, Y Combinator
Thank you Garry for everything you've helped me with. Good luck with your new adventure!
vj44··on Interview with Nenad Rakocevic about Red, a Rebol-inspired programming language
Great interview & overview of Red, Nenad! (if you're reading this)

I had a rare opportunity to speak with Nenad a while back in Beijing. Great dude all around, I wish him all the best with the development of Red - hope to see its success!

vj44··on Errplane (YC W13) Snags $8.1M for Open-Source InfluxDB Time Database
Good luck on your journey Todd & Paul!
vj44··on Obama likely to expand a foreign-student pipeline the high-tech industry loves
Most visas (in particular, the OPT in question and the H1B) allow very easy work-permit transfer to other employers. So the wage decrease won't apply here.
vj44··on Obama likely to expand a foreign-student pipeline the high-tech industry loves
48 month OPT/STEM extension will be huge for international students here - great move! Since OPT has few limitations and allows internationals to become self-employed, hopefully more international students will end up on the entrepreneurial path. And for those in "regular employment", more chances to apply for H1B and more time to figure out other, more permanent options (if needed). Lastly, hopefully, more smart graduates will decide to stay in this country and contribute to the economy & innovation, instead of contributing somewhere else. Win-win-win situation. Looking forward to the update tonight.
vj44··on Announcing Calibre 2.0
I'm sure calibre 2.0 is a great technical feat, and kudos for all the work put into this product, but judging by the screenshot the user interface is equally clunky as in 1.0. This software does mostly everything I need it for to convert ebooks... but can you, the authors, please improve the UI?
vj44··on Accelerate Excel – 100x faster spreadsheets
Our engine can be run independently & outside of Excel, and it works on Mac too (albeit without the nice UI in Excel).
vj44··on Accelerate Excel – 100x faster spreadsheets
It all runs locally, Excel files are not sent remotely. No COM is used (god forbid!) for the engine. We have a small plugin for nice UI in Excel, but the engine can be run outside of Excel as well.
vj44··on Accelerate Excel – 100x faster spreadsheets
We kept that in mind - the actual core is written in C, Python is used mainly for auxiliary jobs (parsing etc.)
vj44··on Accelerate Excel – 100x faster spreadsheets
Yes, all native Excel functions are re-implemented.
vj44··on Accelerate Excel – 100x faster spreadsheets
One of the founders here - it's written in a combination of C, Python and Numpy. We had to go low-level to make it fast, but it's still portable.
vj44··on European Court Says CIA Ran Secret Jail in a Polish Forest
As a person born in Poland and living in the US, I'm proud that these two countries cooperate to advance common goals, and I can only wish that we work closer together (both openly or secretly).

As to what happened in those secret locations, the European Court is free to investigate (and potentially prosecute) CIA, which is the organization directly responsible. But then, wouldn't it make more sense to go after Guantanamo (or eastern Ukraine these days) first?

vj44··on We don't eat swans
My grandfather told my that during the WW2 occupation, fisherman occasionally used to catch & eat swans. Even during the war, the meat was not socially accepted for human consumption (ie. in western culture would consider it on par with "dog meat"), thus not very popular.
vj44··on Automate your Ad Analytics Spreadsheets
Thanks for your comments. I would love to hear more about what you think of the space ryen - if you have a chance, can you please email me at victor@datanitro.com?
vj44··on Automate your Ad Analytics Spreadsheets

vj44··on Group Matchmaking Startup The Dating Ring (YC W14) Launches In San Francisco
What's the difference between The Dating Ring and Grouper? The article suggests a more "personalized" match making, but it seems to me that both use a combination of human input & some algorithms.
vj44··on Show HN: A Better Excel Data API
Andreash - this product is designed specifically for Excel - as an end user, you can pull data from within Excel directly to your spreadsheet (which may already contain models, charts etc.), without having to shuffle around multiple files.
vj44··on Big Data in Excel - live stream
I'm Victor, one of the founders of DataNitro. Please reach out to me at victor@datanitro.com, I'll help you with this.
vj44··on A collaborative spreadsheet in less than 45 lines of JS, one library used
Dope.
vj44··on Instacart: Crowdsourcing Your Grocery Shopping
Congrats guys! Are you planning to come to NYC this year?
vj44··on Excel and SQL
Yes, DataNitro only works with Windows versions of MS Excel. Maybe a VM/Parallels with Windows + Excel would work for you?
vj44··on Show HN: Lightweight Threads, Channels and Actors for the JVM
Great work Ron!
vj44··on Soviet College Admission — My Dad's Story (1970)
Great post, and a very sad story (with a happy ending). Unfortunately, US (and others) universities applied similar policies (probably, more subtly though) up to 1970: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numerus_clausus#Numerus_clausus...
vj44··on Voicegem (YC S12) joins Palantir
Looking forward to meet you guys in nyc!
vj44··on The Future of Excel
That's exactly what DataNitro offers - the entire Excel api in (C)Python.

Oh, and it's free for non-commercial use (educational etc.)

vj44··on The Future of Excel
The problem with ironpython is that it's not always compatible with all python libraries (esp. those based on C extensions; ie. heavy, scientific libraries similar to scipy); Using regular CPython immediately solves this problem. Also, the official .Net office API (read: VSTO) is not targeted on newbie programmers (imho).
