vizard··on Ask HN : Discussion sites for hardware geeks?
That does look interesting. Will let my friends know too :)
vizard··on Ask HN : Discussion sites for hardware geeks?
Precisely. Thats why I am looking for something like HN of hardware.
vizard··on Analyst: Apple to release 'closed' Netbook with iPhone-esque App Store
Something like the Celio Redfly?
vizard··on Ask HN : Blogger, wordpress? Which one is good for programmers?
Thanks that was helpful. One of the complicating factors in my case is code highlighting and particularly handing Scala code. But as others are pointing out, I guess I can think of it as a client side problem independent of what blogging software I run.
vizard··on Advice to Incoming Freshmen in Computer Science
I take issue with the advice that you shouldnt study OS, compiler design, hardware design etc. If you take that out, you will never be one of the guys who did stuff like design the GFS, GWT, AWS and so on. You might become a good user of them but if you have any interest whatsoever in one day building cool infrastructure and solving really hard problems (as opposed to building throwing sheep apps), you may do very well studying these courses.

Which problems you will ultimately solve as an engineer you cannot know. Better to have a knowledge of at least 3-4 tools. What you may think of "web development" may really turn out to be a compiler problem.

Also see one of Steveys rants where he advocates learning compilers .. I dont necessarily agree with all his points but its still pretty decent.

edit : Also its much easier to learn RoR or Django whatever on your own than in the univ. Its non-trivial though not impossible to learn compilers on your own.

vizard··on Analysis: more than 16 cores may well be pointless
Did you actually read the article? How is it in anyway related to the "five computers" thingy? The article is talking about an architectural limitation not a business/consumer one.
vizard··on Hands on with Nokia's iPhone killer
Anyone know what browser it will be running?
vizard··on Ask HN: Review my webapp.
Hey I noticed you can get RSS feeds. This is a huge security risk : If anyone knows my email then can just find out the list I made :(

Not cool. Allow it to be disabled.

vizard··on Open Source: The Model Is Broken
Why mix the business model with the license? If you are the sole owner of the code, first release it for pay/donations whatever, then once you cross a revenue threshold, release it as open source?
vizard··on Seemywhere.com
From their FAQ, you signup for their site with a "username". Then you install their software on your phone. Their software determines your location using the cellular network. Once you install the software, anyone who knows your username can see your location.

Creepy :|

vizard··on Is it going to rain?
thanks .. much appreciated.
vizard··on Tell YC: Happy Thanksgiving everyone
Unless you are an astronaut.
vizard··on Intel presentation reveals the future of the CPU-GPU war
Intel has revealed a lot more about Larrabee since then. If you are interested in GPGPU, you might want to check out the paper Intel presented at SIGGRAPH : "Larrabee: A Many-Core x86 Architecture for Visual Computing"

http://www.siggraph.org/s2008/attendees/program/item/?type=p...

As a person currently working with both CUDA and the AMD Stream SDK, I am pretty excited about Larrabee. If nothing else, I hope Intel will simply provide better documentation and perhaps better software tools :|

vizard··on Genetic A/B Testing with JavaScript
Offtopic : I am frustrated with people ignoring no free lunch theorem and trying to use GAs everywhere.
vizard··on Ask HN: Review my startup
I too agree with the "if you have a brain that is" being too condescending. You have to note that humor is also culturally very specific and varies across demographics. What you think of humor may not always work. (I, for example, did not find it in good taste though I did understand that it was intended to be humorous).
vizard··on The BaseShield App Store for Windows launches (YC Winter 08)
Well I guess there is still a long road ahead. They are a service+infrastructure provider. I would approach some ISVs to actually deploy via BaseShield and to also approach some IHVs to bundle BaseShield with new PCs perhaps.
vizard··on Why you should sell open source software
Doesnt Pascal's wager type of argument apply here? Opening the source has very little benefit in most cases while opening the source presents a very real danger of clones.
vizard··on Ask HN: Do you tell other people about HN?
I am bored of all these posts that talk about HN. I am not on HN to talk about HN itself dammit.
vizard··on Poll: Turn off News.YC a few hours a day?
Time to adjust my sleep schedule I guess. I blame PG for making me sleep during day.
vizard··on Mathematica 7.0 Released Today
Mathematica is nice but I dont like their licensing policies. Had a huge fight with them once after I had to reinstall my OS :(
vizard··on He Used To Be G94b
Hmm .. starts to look like Nvidia graphics chips code names .. g92b anyone?
vizard··on Clutter Toolkit for GUI's
If I remember, the company behind it was bought by Intel for their Linux distro for MIDs and low power devices. Its also slated to be integrated into Maemo, the OS running on the Nokia Internet Tablets. Demos look impressive but sadly not enough documentation.
vizard··on Facebook Rolls Out Verified App Program, Plus One Hell Of A Revenue Model For Themselves
Misleading title .. stupid article. A maximum of $18m is "hell of a revenue model" for facebook?
vizard··on OLPC Resumes 'Give One, Get One' XO Laptop Sale
I dont understand why they dont offer "get one" too? Wouldnt that increase the volumes driving the price down?
vizard··on A win for Twitter users: Johnson & Johnson apologizes for Motrin ad
Non-native english speaker here .. care to explain what you mean?
vizard··on Why an 'iPod killer' will never kill the iPod
Weird .. people actually LIKE using iTunes? I mean its pretty decent .. but nothing special.
vizard··on A.M.D. to Split Into Two Operations
Well ATI isnt doing all that bad right now. Its AMD's microprocessor business that isnt doing all that great right now.
vizard··on High Priority Free Software Projects
Umm .. why does this list only contain clones of commercial softwares? I would rather say that high priority projects are the linux kernel, git, myriad python and ruby interpreters etc which are widely used and do contain some design innovations.
vizard··on Story of Phil Katz (PKZip)
I found this interesting page from a reddit comment : http://www.esva.net/~thom/philkatz.html

edit : Its about Phil Katz from the original author of ARC which was the software Katz allegedly modified to produce PKARC.

vizard··on Intelligent people 'less likely to believe in God'
Let me remind you that converse is not true. Being an atheist doesnt make you smart.
