vixen99··on Canadian bill would strip internet access from 'specified persons', no warrant
From the UK: Seems to me that very few people except those with very direct interests, support the Keir Starmer Government and his Finance Minister - Reeves who is universally regarded as a disaster (armed with an Oxford PPE degree & yet driving businesses down and out in the UK). My point: 'so willing to give ... power' ? We have three more years of this administration and meanwhile seem unable to do anything to prevent them creating the Britain of their fantasies.

Good point! Interestingly there is evidence that at least some life forms appear to benefit from 'highly radioactive' water.

What is 'the science'? If you're not in agreement with 'the science', you're simply wrong. Why can't those mavericks that you find in almost every every discipline understand this and learn to accept 'the truth', the consensus?

We can agree on that but how about spreading more widely the simple advice - floss thoroughly & daily, clean your teeth twice a day and don't let sugars hang around in your mouth for extended periods. We know these pathogenic oral bugs can be related to heart disease (fibrosis for one) but maybe other dysfunction as well as prostate. A catchy meme might do the trick to remind us all.
vixen99··on Britain to introduce compulsory digital ID for workers
https://www.ft.com/content/b8c02080-a290-4af7-9702-03230aa9c...

"Hackers obtained the details of tens of millions of British voters in a “complex cyber attack” on the Electoral Commission that went undetected for more than a year, the elections watchdog admitted on Tuesday. The body said “hostile actors” first breached its network in August 2021, gaining access to its file-sharing and email systems and obtaining copies of the electoral register, but “suspicious activity” was not identified until October 2022."

Of course such a thing will never happen in relation to Digital ID Cards, will it?

vixen99··on Britain to introduce compulsory digital ID for workers
Only a day or two since this was announced and a petition against ID Cards has already reached 1 million - way beyond the 100,000 required for a Parliamentary Debate. I wonder what the petition's growth rate will be over the next couple of weeks or so.
vixen99··on Does Acetaminophen During Pregnancy Increase Autism Risk? A Look at the Evidence
'Evidence That Acetaminophen Triggers Autism in Susceptible Individuals Has Been Ignored and Mishandled for More Than a Decade'

'Overwhelming evidence shows that exposure of susceptible babies and children to acetaminophen (paracetamol) triggers many if not most cases of autism spectrum disorder, and that oxidative stress causes susceptibility. However, these conclusions have not yet been widely acknowledged or integrated into clinical practice or regulatory guidelines'

Exactly. To remind us - it's the fructose which is a metabolic problem in amounts over a certain value - worth checking out why. Cane sugar and beet sugar both contain sucrose which is one glucose linked to one fructose molecule so you get half the fructose.

vixen99··on How can England possibly be running out of water?
'The highest earning 1% in the UK pay an estimated 28% of all income tax. '

https://fullfact.org/economy/do-top-1-earners-pay-28-tax-bur...

The good news is that not all that '1% of the rich' are leaving. However unless this 28% of all tax figure is wrong, inevitably there will be an increase to counter the loss.

vixen99··on How can England possibly be running out of water?
Agreed! Two things here: 1. Totally deficient regulatory framework and 2. The argument for those on the Right or Left is - do those running the company bear the consequences of their actions? Do public servants? Almost never. We need water, power, roads etc., So define the goals for these and get people to run them (public or private) who will bear consequences for a F.U. Politicians almost never face the consequences of their decisions. If there was at least some linkage the future might be different. That is a fundamental problem with bureaucracy as well.

As a far distant example: Tony Blair sails into opulent old age as a 'respected statesman' having lied about weapons of mass destruction incurring the deaths of 150K - 1 million.

"[Bits of] the universe observing itself" is indisputably true. And we know (as far as we can tell) that maintaining our component atoms within a certain kind of dynamic pattern is a prerequisite for what we experience as life and consciousness. Nothing metaphysical just stubborn fact.
vixen99··on When the sun will literally set on what's left of the British Empire
Rather surprising then that we have the Commonwealth of 56 member states, most of which were former territories of the British Empire from which the Commonwealth developed. They are connected through their use of the English language and cultural and historical ties. Doubtless these countries have appalling memories of the evils perpetrated by the Brits. And yet they even accept Charles III as the head of the Commonwealth. Also amazing that in most colonies independence was achieved without a shot being fired.

Unbelievable eh? Maybe it's a case of Stockholm Syndrome.

On the other hand it could have been worse. We should remember that for almost every colonized people, the alternative to British Jurisdiction was not unmolested progress towards modernity but conquest by someone else, the French, the Germans, the Turks, the Russians, the Japanese and worst of all, the Belgians.

vixen99··on Intermittent fasting correlated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease
Not that individualistic. We have tables giving upper and lower limits for around 26 nutrients for daily intake. These tables are published by dozens of countries which mostly did their own research over decades. The tables are pretty much consistent with very little variation. Grok offers a rough estimate of between 10 and 50 million subjects used to determine these values. When you say 'you just have to see what works for you' that’s fine if the ‘what’ is a container (food) that provides content (nutrients) within the limits that extensive research has found to work. With a few very odd exceptions our biochemistry is consistent.
vixen99··on Why Romania excels in international Olympiads
Here's one issue. Romania has a really lousy motorway system, what there is of it. I gather that corruption has much to do with this apart from construction difficulties involving the Carpathians. As an example there isn't even a motorway between Bucharest and Brasov (88 miles or 141 km apart), the latter being a favorite destination for tourists and wealthy and not-so wealthy second home owners alike. The trip by car either way is usually a nightmare. I should add that Brasov is one of the major towns of Romania not just a tourist attraction.

To the point! The plight of innumerable isolated rural communities trying to attract decent teachers and conditions for their kids is clear to see. Trains don't cut it. General poverty results with knock-on effects.
