vixen99··on In Europe, wind and solar overtake fossil fuels
Especially when they are offshored to China. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-023-01308-x
vixen99··on How AI destroys institutions
I'll focus just on food here: people do have a choice. I don't live in the US but is it impossible to buy basic ingredients, fruit, vegetables, grains, meat whatever etc., and actually cook something? Eating this kind of food you can even stack your life chances more in your favor. Huge amounts of information abound as to the how you can do that. Consumers, if they are free to choose, determine value and entrepreneurs will respond. It can be profoundly distorted, that's true but at base, capitalism is doing something that someone else finds of value or not.
vixen99··on Article by article, how Big Tech shaped the EU's roll-back of digital rights
Fascism: 'A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.'

Interesting because doesn't every sort of democratic state try to be 'a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls'? Depends how stringent and usually not stringent enough for many on the Left and on the Right.

When tempted to use the word 'fascism', is it not better to describe the issue with which one's concerned (maybe deeply) rather than using a fit-all word and take care not to devalue the significance of the word as it was, for instance, applied in WW2 to some of the appalling atrocities that occurred in that period and those we've seen reports of recently?

vixen99··on Starting from scratch: Training a 30M Topological Transformer
Perhaps someone who does understand the paper will kindly make it a bit clearer for those of who get a bit lost.
vixen99··on Find a pub that needs you
Thank you! I took a bet with myself on what you would say (if you did) and lost! Seems to me that the EU as presently constructed is a huge problem; on some other points I'd agree.
vixen99··on Find a pub that needs you
While agreeing totally with your sentiment it's a fact that alcohol (the raison d'etre for pubs existing at present unless their business model changes) is classed as a Group 1 carcinogen. 'Consuming alcohol increases the risk of developing at least 7 types of cancer;, https://www.hhs.gov/surgeongeneral/reports-and-publications/... etc., We've all got to die but some ways are nastier than others.
vixen99··on Find a pub that needs you
The onus is on you to suggest an alternative. Which countries not under it 'face the same problems'?
vixen99··on Find a pub that needs you
I'd be interested to know your view on how you think Britain should be governed and the extent to which you think others would agree. Serious question: can you offer a link to some such description?
vixen99··on Iran has now been offline for 96 hours
I find it impossible to see how the broad assertions you have made could possibly be subject to resolution in any way by argument so it would be a waste of time. I suspect whatever counter arguments were produced you'd diss them.

Downvoted!

vixen99··on Erich von Däniken has died
Perhaps most of us can assess something like this and decide for ourselves on the available evidence as to its truth and relevance. What the author claims seems, to me at least, a minor issue. I get it that you do not agree. More generally aside from outright lies and pure stories, there are always analogical levels of interpretation. Presumably, if an unbeliever, you're irate at many of the world religions.

Your suggestion should it materialize would certainly be in line with the general atmosphere which has been developing in the UK.

vixen99··on EU Council Approves New "Chat Control" Mandate Pushing Mass Surveillance
And also: silently praying in public near an abortion center. The lady in question should have asked the policeman (as he was) "How would you define praying?". At least he'd maybe have paused for an interesting short discussion on semantics and more before for arresting her - as he did. https://youtu.be/wXURFRSUS9U

Two years ago and she has received damages however similar attitudes still abound with marked police disapproval of attempts to display the English National flag - in England.

vixen99··on Brain has five 'eras' with adult mode not starting until early 30s
I'm not sure about the evidence for that gross generalization but young people are much less likely to vote than older people.

Plenty of data on this: https://theharvardpoliticalreview.com/gen-z-voter-barriers-2...

vixen99··on New magnetic component discovered in the Faraday effect
After a brilliant start (atoms etc.,) it starts to be problematic once one hits societies. After all, the earlier progressions are undeniably astounding stable successes in their various incarnations. A pessimist might say 'Stable' societies so far have tended eventually towards being self-destructive tyrannies.

vixen99··on Two recently found works of J.S. Bach presented in Leipzig [video]
Chopin's 4th Prelude. Very simple harmonically and just about the easiest piece he ever composed. Listening to it one understands how appropriate it was for it to be played at his funeral.
vixen99··on James Watson has died
Nobody wants the sickle cell anaemia mutated gene for haemoglobin except insofar that it confers some measure of protection against malaria which is presumably how it's managed to survive.
vixen99··on Why aren't smart people happier?
Where is the evidence for this assumption, either way? There isn't any unless you generalize from some selected group to millions of people across the world. Terman 2021 - gifted children had similar life satisfaction to norms. Li looked at 23 studies & 30,000 people- 0.10 correlation. Veenhoven 100,000 correlation for IQ and happiness was 0.05. Not a smart question.
vixen99··on An Illustrated Introduction to Linear Algebra, Chapter 2: The Dot Product
That's your preference. However "To illustrate is to make something more clear or visible. Children's books are illustrated with pictures. An example can illustrate an abstract idea. "illustrate" comes from the Latin illustrare 'to light up or enlighten.'"

vixen99··on The decline of deviance
You have a point. Deviance is tending not to stick its head above the parapet.
vixen99··on The Linux Boot Process: From Power Button to Kernel

vixen99··on Nobel Peace Prize 2025: María Corina Machado
For the record: Hamas leader Dr Basem Naim has publicly acknowledged Trump's part in bringing terrorists to the table, saying: ”Without the personal interference of President Trump in this case, I don't think that it would happen to reach this end, the end of the war.”
vixen99··on Nobel Peace Prize 2025: María Corina Machado
I would love to hear a discussion between you and those who believe Trump has pulled off the diplomatic coup of the century so far. A dispassionate observer might see a touch of TDS. Not me of course.

Nobel Peace Prize: to the "person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".
