vishnu_ks··on Ask HN: What Technologies to Learn in 2020?
Since Zulip was mentioned, I like to point folks who are interested more to the Architecture overview docs of Zulip. The docs has details on how Zulip make use of Django, PostgreSQL, Redis, Tornado, RabbitMQ etc for building a scalable chat application.

vishnu_ks··on California is about to allow former felons to serve on juries
Okay. Thank you for the confirmation.
vishnu_ks··on California is about to allow former felons to serve on juries
Can you listen to the podcast from 12th minute for a few minutes so that we all are in same page? Its highly possible I oversimplified and missed some key elements since I listened to this episode a while back.
vishnu_ks··on California is about to allow former felons to serve on juries
I am not taking about Parole or Probation. Time sentenced in certain jails or prisons would be counted as 2x or 3x more the time served. So cases are often delayed by the lawyers so that felons stay in these jails longer and can come out early. The podcast has more details. I am myself not well versed with the exact terminology.

Updated my original comment for clarity.

vishnu_ks··on California is about to allow former felons to serve on juries
I recently listened to a podcast in which James Beshar interviews an anonymous San Francisco police officer who has been in the service for a long time. The police officer said that there are a lot of loopholes(not talking about paroles, probation or anything related) in California justice system in particular that allows felons to come out much faster than the actual time sentenced. For example felons that are sentenced for 30+ years in prison for committing serious crimes can come out in as fast as in 15 years by staying in certain prisons/jails that counts the time served as 2x or 3x. So lawyers game this so that the felons stay in these prisons/jails longer than other prisons and come out faster. I personally has not thought much about any of these issues and neither have a stand or expertise on what is right or wrong. I found what the police officer said (so did the host) very interesting and thought its worth sharing here.

vishnu_ks··on Twitter CEO Endorses DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo also makes money through ads.
vishnu_ks··on Ask HN: What is your experience with e-readers? Are they worth it?
This is not for everyone. Smart Phones are always looking for your attention to show you useless notifications and ads. So for most people it's so much easier and effective reading a physical book or Kindle.
vishnu_ks··on Travel without a phone
> Rarely anyone who didn't travel didn't travel because they thought "travel is too complicated, I need a constant electronic map with me", anymore that they said on in their own country.

hmm. I was referring to how the Internet made it easy to plan and book a travel. Now anyone have access to information on what it takes to travel to a foreign country. Previously it was more like a blackbox. If you are from a developing country you need to apply for visa and you have to figure all that out without an Internet. You need to goto a travel agent for information, booking etc and you need to trust the agent. You don't know anyone apart from the person in the travel channel who traveled in Eruope for fun. Internet massively reduced the barriers for people traveling record. People have access to all these information for free by sitting inside their house. Ofcourse economies booming helped but I would give the Internet some credits in this as well.

vishnu_ks··on Travel without a phone
You are right. Lot of people traveled in 20th century. But a lot more could have traveled if there was Internet in 20th century. Internet has reduced the friction to travel abroad by a lot. You know more about the world now. You can plan travel and book flight tickets, hostels and bus tickets in multiple countries by not even leaving your room from a small city in India.

> What's the difficult / tragic experience one has in a different country if they don't have constant internet access or GPS?

hmm. I think having an Instant access to Internet is like a super power. You feel more in control as well as save a lot of time. Some examples

* Finding exchanges that gives you a good rate in a new country. Lot of exchanges just rip you off and sorting by negative reviews will help you a lot.

* I think Google maps is pretty helpful especially if you are on a tight schedule. I had to get a bus late night in Budapest and had only 1 hour to reach the bus stop from hostel. I am pretty sure I could not have reached the bus stop on time if it was not for Goole maps. The maps told me that half the train track is not working because of maintainance and I have to get down at station X and start walking. There were hardly anyone in road at that time and it would have been super scary If I didnt have Google maps.

* You often need to use an App to unlock a rental bicycle. Ofcourse there are other ways to rent a bicycle but this is much more convinent and acessible.

* Need to contact emergency services but dont know/forgot the number.

vishnu_ks··on Travel without a phone
I was traveling in Europe last month and met an old Canadian lady in a hostel in Berlin. She must have been in her 60s and she don't own a phone. She had a phone some years back but she left it after 4 months. She travels around with the help of maps and has been to more than 30 countries. I can personally never do this. Its hard enough traveling in a country which speaks a foreign language and has a diffrent culture. But I have very high admiration for people who can do this. I think a better alternative for folks who want to try something like this is to get a sim that has a very limited data plan so that you use the Internet only when necessary.
vishnu_ks··on Show HN: Remote Development Environment for Teams
Thanks. Fixed it. We wasted a lot of time on landing page while building our last product. This time we decided we will built it quickly made the landing page in under an hour. I knew we messed up somewhere. Also we are super sleepy at this point :)
vishnu_ks··on Show HN: Remote Development Environment for Teams
Good question. Codeanywhere is more like a remote IDE that let you connect to an existing development environment. Imperius spins up the development environment of your team in one click from cloud. You can use any tool including Codeanywhere to connect to Imperius and start coding :)
vishnu_ks··on Kill Instant Messaging
2) This is fixed. If you are running on-prem you can upgrade from master or wait till the next stable release. https://zulipchat.com/help/restrict-visibility-of-email-addr....

3) Zulip do support importing from Slack. https://zulipchat.com/help/import-from-slack. I don't think there is anything else we can do about this issue.

vishnu_ks··on Why Medium Sucks
Since you mentioned you read 100s of individual blogs what do you think of https://diff.blog. Its a side project that I have been working for a while. Do you see yourselves using something like this?
vishnu_ks··on India to order taxi aggregators like Uber, Ola to go electric
Ola recently raised $56 million to spin out a dedicated business that focus only on electric vehicles. In March, Power Minister R. K. Singh said the government was aiming to ensure that at least 30% of the country's vehicles run on electricity by 2030, a significant dilution of the earlier-stated goal of an all-EV fleet by that year.

vishnu_ks··on Why Medium Sucks
I don't think we need a centralised publishing platform like Medium ever again. Anyone can create a blog for free using Wordpress. RSS feeds are amazing and it can easily serve the job of subscribing to these blogs. Look at the podcasting community for example. It's built on top of RSS feeds and it is thriving. Nobody needs a Medium.com in Podcasting world. What we need in the blogging world are more platforms and apps that are built on top of RSS feeds. Better RSS readers. Platforms that makes it easier to easily find and subscribe to blogs using RSS. Platforms that brings audience to self hosted blogs.
vishnu_ks··on GitHub Sponsors
Also there are hundreds of way to receive one time donations on the internet currently. GitHub focusing on recurring subscription makes sense.
vishnu_ks··on Slack Is Not Where 'Deep Work' Happens
Yup. Zulip has channels just like Slack. A channel is comprised of topics. When someone want to start a conversation they create a new topic. If they want to just join an existing conversation they reply back to the existing topic.

You can see a live demo by visiting our community server at https://chat.zulip.org/

vishnu_ks··on Slack Is Not Where 'Deep Work' Happens
> It feels a bit tone-deaf to promote your tool in a thread about unproductivity caused by chat tools.

The entire article was written to promote their tool Nuclino.

>> All of our team's work (including the writing of this article) happens in Nuclino, and even though it's a real-time collaboration tool, most of it happens asynchronously. Without the expectations of an immediate response, our team is free to focus on our work, reconnecting later to respond.

I don't see any reason why one can't suggest an alternative product that solves the issues of synchronous chat apps just like the one mentioned in the Article. Zulip is an asynchronous tool just like Nuclino.

> Its not the tool which break communication, its people not following rules. If people follow the "Use threads at all times" rule, slack is totally working fine.

Eaxctly! People don't follow rules. Thats why Slack threads are hardly useful. On the other hand in Zulip people always create a new topic for a new conversation since that's how the tool is designed!

vishnu_ks··on Slack Is Not Where 'Deep Work' Happens
Topics are not the same as channels. In Zulip each conversation in a channel would have a topic. A channel would be a collection of topics. You can ignore the topics you are not interested in and focus on topics that are relevant. So for catching up all you need to do is go through the topics in a channel instead of going through all the messages.

vishnu_ks··on Slack Is Not Where 'Deep Work' Happens
Zulip does save you from drowning in messages! Instead of going through all the messages, one just have to go through Topics and consume messages only from topics they are interested in. This is so much efficient compared to a chat system without topics :)
vishnu_ks··on Slack Is Not Where 'Deep Work' Happens
Try Zulip. All meetings have an agenda!

https://imgur.com/UMBuOuh

Long Version: In Zulip, each and every conversation in a channel has a topic. So for catching up one don't have to go through all messages in a channel. Instead just go through the topic names and open the topics only you are interested in catching up. Since each conversation can have a topic you can reply back to conversations even after days as well as can have multiple productive conversations in one channel at same time!

vishnu_ks··on Zulip 2.0: Open source team chat
Since you mentioned 100% remote, don't you think Zulip has advantage over other chat apps because of the asynchronous nature of conversations? Zulip team is also fully remote. We have core team members in North America, Europe and Asia all using solely Zulip for communicating. We don't do video/audio conferencing. All most all the decisions are made via text chat thanks to the wonderful asynchronous nature of Zulip threads :)
