vinceyuan··on Andrew Ng on Life, Creativity, and Failure
I am learning the course of Machine Learning [1] at Coursera. I didn't know he co-founded Coursera. Can't believe this awesome course is free. Andrew Ng is really a good teacher. Thank you Andrew Ng and Coursera.

vinceyuan··on Facebook iOS App Battery Explanation
iOS SDK can't handle our scale.
vinceyuan··on YouTube Red, a $9.99 Site-Wide Ad-Free Subscription with Play Music
I still can't believe Google chose Play as the name of app market.
vinceyuan··on How Can We Achieve Age Diversity in Silicon Valley?
> Life is unfair, especially in Silicon Valley. It's not about the unfairness, it's about our response to the unfairness.

> There has never been a better time and a better way to succeed than building software today. It doesn't matter who you are, where you're at, what you're like, what you have, or who you're with. 95% of the battle is what you can do. So go do it.

Thank you very much for the golden words. I wanted to complain something here, but your words let me be confident again.

vinceyuan··on Show HN: Booky.io – Online bookmark manager
> booky.io is a private project and therefore completely free of charge. We want to provide a useful service for you and we do not ask for any money.

How do they make money to continue this project? When people use a bookmark service, they want to know if it will be available several years later.

vinceyuan··on More than six million Americans have come out on Facebook

Why do you still use Facebook?

vinceyuan··on Dell, EMC, HP, Cisco are the walking dead
> They couldn’t use servers from Dell and HP and IBM.

Does Amazon buy servers from Dell, HP or IBM?

vinceyuan··on 81-year-old man driven to death by phone scammers
Similar things happen in China every day. Government, police, banks warn people many times, but there are still some people believing they will win a lot of money. They forget "No pay, no gain".
vinceyuan··on New Windows 10 Devices From Microsoft
I agree with you. If you open the lid, everything looks very good. But if you close the lid, it looks weird.
vinceyuan··on New Windows 10 Devices From Microsoft
Not sure the hinge of Surface Book is strong enough. If I put Surface Book and heavy things into a backpack, I will worry about the hinge. I don't worry if it is a normal laptop.
vinceyuan··on New Windows 10 Devices From Microsoft
Tech specs of Surface Book are very nice. But it does not look good and is too thick when the lid is closed. https://imgur.com/IXUzASs
vinceyuan··on Show HN: Cancel your Comcast in 5 minutes
Good idea. Next time, say you will move to China where there are state telecom companies only.

vinceyuan··on The Cost of Mobile Ads on News Websites
I agree. Some famous website has even longer loading time. See the discuss on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9940202
vinceyuan··on Windows Drops Bing in China for Baidu
It's not about the download speed. Many people in China use Baidu to find how to get and install (pirated) windows. If the official Windows 10 appears at the first one of the search results, Microsoft will be very happy.
vinceyuan··on Windows Drops Bing in China for Baidu
> Baidu’s new Windows 10 distribution channel, Baidu “Windows 10 Express” will make it easy for Chinese Internet users to download an official Windows 10 experience.

What Microsoft really wants is to use Baidu's channel to distribute Windows 10. When Windows 10's market share is high, Microsoft will drop Baidu of course.

vinceyuan··on Lyft Moves Customer Support Team to Nashville to Combat High-Priced SF Market
(I am not living in the US and never heard Nashville.) When I read this title, I thought Lyft is moving customer support team to India. OK, now I know Nashville is the state capital of Tennessee. :-)
vinceyuan··on iOS at Facebook [pdf]
This post is very interesting. News reported Facebook would create a simplified Android app for low end phone owners in Africa. I think They should do it for iOS too.
vinceyuan··on The life and death of a laptop battery
(I know this post is about linux.) My windows laptop batteries usually die after 2 years. I think Windows laptops have the problem of overcharging. To avoid it, I have to unplug the battery when I need to use a laptop as a desktop. We have to admit Apple does good job in battery management. My 2010 MacBook Pro 13-inch's battery is still in good condition (relatively).
vinceyuan··on Vim setup for Go
I need to use YouCompleteMe for C++ autocomplete.
vinceyuan··on A first look at the OS the Chinese government wants to replace Windows
Though NeoKylin is not a free OS, I guess Dell may get paid for preinstalling NeoKylin from China Standard Software. According to this source (in Chinese) [1], China Standard Software got 0.5 billions RMB funding ($800M) from the gov. The gov measures its performance by some methods including the shipping number of NeoKylin. It's natural for Dell and China Standard Software to have such a contract. One preinstalls NeoKylin for money. The other has the number to get funding from the gov. Though nobody uses it, two companies get money.

vinceyuan··on Vim setup for Go
YouCompleteMe crashes frequently on my mac. I can't find a solution. Does someone here have a solution?
vinceyuan··on A first look at the OS the Chinese government wants to replace Windows
Nobody uses it in China. Dell installs it on computers just because a computer without an OS is not allowed to sell in China.
vinceyuan··on Oyster is shutting down
Is it fair to Oyster's investors? According to Engadget and Recode [1], "a portion" of Oyster's staff (including its CEO and co-founders) are jumping ship for Google's Play Books division. In short, this is an indirect acquisition -- Google is snapping up the core of the company without buying all of its assets.

vinceyuan··on Popular Chinese iOS apps compromised in malware attack
Downloading apps from App Store is very slow in China and sometimes you can't even open App Store successfully. It's not Apple's fault (but Apple should do something to solve it). The real cause is the gov and GFW. Many developers use XunLei(Thunder, a p2p downloading tool) to accelerate downloading. I used it too when I was in Shanghai China. After I moved to Hong Kong, I always download directly from App Store and the downloading speed is about 5MB/s.
vinceyuan··on Why WhatsApp Only Needs 50 Engineers for Its 900M Users
I did know WhatsApp uses Erlang which supports hot deployment. But after reading this article, I still don't know Why WhatsApp Only Needs 50 Engineers for Its 900M Users.
vinceyuan··on HP to cut 25-30k jobs

vinceyuan··on Capabilities and Services
Cool. According to Space launch market competition[1] "Falcon 9 rockets [were] already the cheapest in the industry."

vinceyuan··on Bye-bye blackboard
I am surprised to see the bad comments about Blackboard software. I never use it. But my ex-manager and several ex-colleagues (software developers and QA) are now working for Blackboard. They are confident in their company's future.
