vinceyuan··on Netflix Is Now Available Around the World
What can I watch on Netflix? I am in Asia and did not use Netflix before. I visited netflix.com but still don't have a clear view of it. The website says "Watch TV shows & movie anytime, anywhere. Plans from $X a month", but does not provide a complete list.

I watched HBO on TV which continuously shows (old) movies. I know Netflix is not like HBO. It is a VOD system, like a video version of Apple Music. Is it correct?

vinceyuan··on Ask HN: What browser extensions do you use for HN?
Hacker News Room http://hackernewsroom.com is a web-based HN reader, built on the official HN API. It's not a browser extension, but it has some nice features including folding comments. And it works well in all modern browsers.

Disclaimer: I built it.

The last paragraph: "What's next?," you may wonder. ... The topmost entry? Stop trying to monitor everything in the world of C++ :-)

Sounds like he will dig into Golang.

I learnt a lot from Effective C++. Thank you, Scott Meyers.

vinceyuan··on Stop looking at HN and go work that thing you promised yourself you'd work on
Exactly. It's inconvenient to read the article and comments in separate pages.
vinceyuan··on Stop looking at HN and go work that thing you promised yourself you'd work on
I will keep looking at HN because I learn a lot about the technology and the trend from it. And I also found the comments on HN are high-quality.

The only thing I don't like on HN is the UI. So I created http://hackernewsroom.com based on HN API. Now I read it everyday. But HN API is read only. When I want to comment, I have to click a link to go back to HN to make comments. Another con of hackernewsroom.com is some websites have the same-origin policy which are unfriendly to iframe.

vinceyuan··on Raspberry Pi Zero vs. Elliott 405
I submitted the same post https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10689371 11 hours ago. But 4 hours ago, dang moved my comment to this post which was created 3 hours ago. It's very weird.
vinceyuan··on Raspberry Pi Zero vs. Elliott 405

Price: $5 vs £85,000 (1957)

Amazing technology advance!

vinceyuan··on Are Go maps sensitive to data races?
> Go maps are not goroutine safe

Which types in Go are goroutine safe? Do we need to use sync.Mutex for all global variables which are read and written in goroutines? My understanding is only read-only variables are goroutine safe.

vinceyuan··on Ask HN: Do you find reading increasingly challenging?
Did you spend too much time on your phone? When many people have nothing to do, they just check cell phones. It's not good.

If you want to read, read paper books or read on kindle. Don't read on your phone.

vinceyuan··on The C standard formalized in Coq
Thanks. Safari is my main browser. I prefer cmd+= to the extension. I found zooming in Safari is much better than in Chrome. Zooming one tab in chrome makes all tabs zoom. That is ridiculous.
vinceyuan··on The C standard formalized in Coq
My macbook pro is old (2012, no retina display). I think "font-size: 10pt;" should have same effects on retina and non-retina computers.
vinceyuan··on The C standard formalized in Coq
The font size on this page is very small. My eyes hurt when I read it on my non-retina 13-inch Macbook Pro (on low-resolution external monitor, it looks bigger.). Is it because I am not a native English speaker? Do native English speakers get used to this font size?

Some websites including Hacker News use very small font size. Reddit's font size is bigger. I created a HN web reader ( http://hackernewsroom.com ) with bigger font size (for myself and friends) to read titles and comments easily. But I can't change the font size of the original article. (Have to zoom in the page by pressing cmd+=)

vinceyuan··on Ask HN: How Does Appodeal (Programmatic Ad Mediation) Work?
Thanks for the reply. Glad to see some guys from Appodeal on HN.

But I still don't understand it. (Maybe it's because I am not familiar with RTB.) Is there any SDK for RTB which differs from the SDKs of traditional ad networks?

To integrate SDKs of traditional ad networks, each app needs a unique ad unit ID. If Appodeal uses the same ad uint ID for all apps, maybe the apps will be banned by the ad networks.

vinceyuan··on Ask HN: How Does Appodeal (Programmatic Ad Mediation) Work?
Any comments?
vinceyuan··on Ask HN: Company is growing and the culture shift is uncomfortable. What do I do?
When there are managers, things will be complex and there will be politics in the office. (I was one of the first 10 people of my first employer. It went to 400 people.)

I don't have golden suggestions for you. If you are a developer, stay focused on coding. If it still drives you mad, go find a better company.

vinceyuan··on The Many Ways of WeChat
It works as designed. WeChat is focusing on mobile phones. Everyone has a phone and it's always with him/her. PC and tablets become the extensions of the phone. There are WeChat clients for PC and Mac. But you still need the phone to login. It always reminds you that WeChat is a mobile app.
vinceyuan··on Why Fontdeck is Retiring
> we have thousands of paying customers

> Typical price is $7.50/year per font

Assume there are 5000 paying customers. The annual income is only $37500. It's too low. The company is running out of money.

vinceyuan··on Ask HN: What do you enjoy working hard at?
For money, honor, power.
vinceyuan··on Show HN: Magic Keyboard
Nice.

Its performance in Chrome is very good. But in Safari it is very bad.

vinceyuan··on Ask HN: Is college even worth it if you're worth your salt as a programmer?
Yes.

Besides programming, you can learn more things in the college, such as physics, arts, maths, finance, social skills, etc. Though they may not bring you money immediately like programming, you will benefit from them. And you can meet many people from other states and countries.

College is one of the happiest periods of my life (though I was very poor).

Weapons, food, training cost a lot of money. So who are giving so much money to ISIS?
vinceyuan··on Who is Jia Yueting, the Chinese billionaire linked to Faraday?
Because I am from China. Smart TVs are their best products. But LeTV is still not a very famous brand. The quality is not good. I heard some LeTV died after a year. Its market share is still tiny. But this company just released android phones. I don't think LeTV phones are better than HTC, not to mention iPhone. I can't believe this company also produce bicycles, and now it wants to build cars. If a company wants to do everything, it can't do anything well.
vinceyuan··on Who is Jia Yueting, the Chinese billionaire linked to Faraday?
This company does not do well in film production, “smart” TVs, video streaming, mobile phones, bicycles. But now it wants to make electric cars. It's really ridiculous.
vinceyuan··on China to begin two-child policy
China is a very big country. But only a small portion of the land is suitable for living. Almost 94 percent of Chinese people live in the Southeast part of the country which covers 43 percent of its land area; while the other six percent people live in the northwestern areas which cover 57 percent of the territory. [1] And people like to live in cities. Can you imagine there are 23.9 million people [2] in Shanghai City?

[1] http://www.travelchinaguide.com/essential/country.htm

[2] http://worldpopulationreview.com/world-cities/shanghai-popul...

vinceyuan··on China to begin two-child policy
One-child policy began in 1979. In 1980, My mother hid in her relatives' houses and finally delivered her second child - me. I was very lucky because if my mother was caught, I can't sit here to type these sentences.

I do understand the one-child policy because there are too many people in China, especially in cities. The population should be under control. (However, as far as I know, one-child policy never really works in the very poor area. It's common to have 3+ children there.)

In recent decades, China becomes much richer and people have better education. Many families (in cities) get used to having only one child and don't want to have the second child because the cost of raising a child becomes very high. Two-child policy should come earlier.
