viktorcode··on Apple's privacy push cost Meta $10B
I think you are under impression that ad industry depends on tracking of individuals. That's incorrect. It just a tad less efficient without tracking.
viktorcode··on Despite the hype, iPhone security no match for NSO spyware (2021)
What you describe is an ideal Alice / Bob situation, setting just a single protected surface. In real world it's getting far more complex: what OS your PGP client is running on? On what hardware? Is anything else running on the same device that may break out of its sandbox and inject the code in another process? And so on.

> when Apple, in fact, explicitly allowed remote code execution by untrusted actors

Can you please elaborate what do you mean by that?

Are you implying there are backdoors in iOS and Android, thanks to US intelligence?
viktorcode··on Despite the hype, iPhone security no match for NSO spyware (2021)
The tools were available at the time, but FBI preferred Apple to compromise their security model instead.

Software security can be thought of as operating on a cost/benefit model. To produce secure software means making attackers spend more resources on penetrating defences than the value they get from successful attack. And it works well for mass market, because the vast majority of attacks are non-targeted attempts to fish for financial credentials, taking over the devices for use in a botnet etc.

For state attacker the model breaks. The value of a target can be very high. And the available resources - financial, technical, other - are there to fill the budget.

I think it is better to use real humans for checking violations and sending emails. Yes, humans inevitably will make mistakes. However, unlike a neural network algorithm they can be reasoned with and can correct their mistakes later. I'd take much longer issue resolution with hired operators over the fast AI violation check.
viktorcode··on Apple contributes to OBS to support screen capture using ScreenCaptureKit
Maybe I'll be laughed at, but right now I consider the most competitive Apple's development environment the Swift Playgrounds on iPad.

I just so wish to see this sleek and fast app replacing old cranky Xcode on macOS by adding missing features.

Apple may have to be ashamed, but bringing up Microsoft as a good OSS citizen?

There's a good post on HN about what it cos Apple to make OS X a certified UNIX. Due to the secrecy of the project they had to use non-corporate accounts for committing bug fixes. The amount of changes was pretty big, but nobody excepts the authors can say it came from Apple.

Of course they will commit to open source projects if it suits their needs (if they use those projects). But people have different opinion on what Apple's needs are.

viktorcode··on Why can't you reverse a string with a flag emoji?
You certainly can. `print(String(flag.reversed()))` in Swift reverses emojis correctly.

That's just sad. Personally, I can't go back to displays with low DPI. Too much strain for my eyes.

Until their clients learn about it. And then they stand to lose.
viktorcode··on JetBrains Mono – the free and open-source typeface for developers
I agree. The symbol combinations may have different meaning depending on where they appear. Replacing raw symbols with ligatures will create confusion.

I was using this font in Rider when JetBrains made it the default, but gave up after several months. The ligatures were giving me a pause still. The effect was opposite to ease of reading the code.

As I understand it he got $10m equivalent of cash, but not $10m of actual stock that would have grown tremendously.
viktorcode··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
Can't wait until metaverse will fail to lure gamers. The hype is on par with NFTs, in both vitality and lack of substance.
viktorcode··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
I don't think Sony has anything against GamePass on PlayStation as long as Microsoft pays its revenue share. After all, there's EA pass on PlayStation.
viktorcode··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
Are you sure everything that Activision / Blizzard publishes will be on GamePass day one?
viktorcode··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
It's not magic but it can block a deal.
viktorcode··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
There's a difference though. Tencent doesn't dictate its studios how to conduct business. Microsoft on the other hand made Bethesda leave PlayStation, which negatively impacts their revenue, but plays into the hand of Microsoft.
viktorcode··on More than 1M fewer students are in college, the lowest numbers in 50 years
> "That could be the beginning of a whole generation of students rethinking the value of college itself."

Given the cost of education in the US, the value of college is questionable indeed.

viktorcode··on Catching Native Apps
Try unplugging from the power outlet and you will notice the difference.
viktorcode··on Catching Native Apps
That's maybe a good argument for a product manager, but very poor one for the end users.

Users don't like slow and bloated. Given equal choice users prefer small and fast. Of course, they are okay with Spotify client, because there's no native Spotify client with the same functionality. People want to have the service, but don't think that everyone is okay with how this service is packaged.

viktorcode··on Catching Native Apps
Developing native application is not targeting single platform. It means choosing a different set of tools and technologies used for development. Instead of relying on some cross-platform framework / module / engine you just rely on different stuff which is closer to the platforms you plan supporting.
viktorcode··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
Not everyone. There are people with compromised immune systems, who can't be protected with vaccines. They are at the mercy of vaccination status and masks of the people around them.
viktorcode··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
Because vaccinated people can still get infected and transmit the decease further. It was evident with delta, and obvious with omicron.
viktorcode··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
> I absolutely love that these things were mandated before “the science” could somehow prove they worked

When threatened with a new virus which spreads through respiratory system it is a common sense to start covering nose and mouth. Especially when there's a copious amount of evidence that masks work for reducing infections in case of other respiratory deceases.

I think we should speak more about how a political bias takes precedence over the survival instinct. That's what does kill people.

viktorcode··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
Not wearing masks in all social settings is more a cultural thing than anything else. Just take a look at the streets of Tokyo now: someone without a mask is a pretty uncommon sight.

Most likely he wouldn't. The second statement is false equivalence. The equivalent comparison would be "if you took someone from the assembly line and make them CEO, would Apple's cost grow 1000% in ten years?"
